THE SERVANT REVEALS HIS MISSION

MARK CHAPTERS 6-10

1. Chapter 6 – The Servant Teaching

• Why was it so hard for Jesus’s hometown Nazareth to accept Him and His teaching? (6:1-6).

• What did Jesus send the Twelve Disciple out to do? What was unusual about this request? What do you think Jesus’ objectives were in this mission? (1:7-13).

• Why do you think Herod though Jesus was John the Baptist risen from the dead? Why did Herod have John the Baptist executed? What was Jesus’ response? (Mark 6: 14-32; Matt. 14:1-14; Luke 9:7-10)

• In the feeding of the five thousand what was the lesson Jesus taught His disciples?

(6:33-44).

• When Jesus walked on the water v. 52 states “for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.” What lesson do you think Jesus was trying to teach His disciples?

• What did the people of Gennesaret do when they recognized who Jesus was? Why do you think they responded to Him this way? (6:53-56)

2. Chapter 7 – The Servant Confronts the Religious Leaders’ Sin.

• What makes traditions a stumbling block? What did Jesus mean when he said, “This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me?” (7:1-13).

• What was the meaning of the parable of “the Heart of Man?” (7:14-23).

• Why did Jesus treat the Syrophoenican woman the way He did? Why do you think Jesus treated people differently especially when it came to healing experiences? (7:24-37).

3. Chapter 8 – The Servant Serves Others

• Earlier, Jesus fed five thousand, now He is feeding four thousand. What motivated Jesus to preform this miracle? What was Jesus warning His disciples about when He told them “Watch out! beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod?” (8:1-21).

• When Jesus healed a blind man at Bethsaida, why do you think Jesus sent him home and warned him not to enter the village? (8:22-26)

• Peter, in confessing that Jesus was the Christ had significant spiritual insight, but immediately afterwards Jesus sternly rebuked him. Why did Jesus rebuke him so sternly? Do we every make the same mistake Peter did? (8:27-38).

4. Chapter 9 – The Servant Reveals who He really is?

• In the Transfiguration, what do you think Elijah and Moses represented? Why did Elijah and Moses only appear? What about all the other people of the Bible like David or Abraham? What was the purpose of the Transfiguration? (9:1-13).

• When Jesus healed the father’s son at the bottom of the Mount of Transfiguration the father responds to Jesus’ question, “If you can? All things are possible to him who believes?” what was the father asking Jesus to do? (9:14-29).

• Why do you think the disciples missed what Jesus was trying to tell them about His crucifixion? (9: 30-37).

• What did Jesus mean by “For he who is not against us is for us?” (9:38-41

• Jesus had a very stern and severe warning in verses 42-50. What was He talking about and why do you think the matter was so severe? (9:42-50).

5. Chapter 10 – The Servant Teaches about Relationships.

• Jesus said that Moses allowed for divorce for what reason? What was God’s intention? And what is God’s prescription for marriage? How does it conflict with the worlds definition? (10:1-12).

• What does Jesus mean when He says, “…whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all?” (10:13-16).

• What was missing in the Rich Young Ruler’s expectation about being able to have eternal life? What was the one thing that kept him from attaining it? (10:17-31).

• Once again, Jesus tries to tell His disciples about His crucifixion, and once again the same issue keeps them from hearing what He has to say. What was the issue that kept them from hearing what Jesus had to say and what effect did it have on the disciples? What did Jesus say the disciples needed to focus on? (10:32-45).

• Who was Bartimaeus? What was he know for, and what did Jesus do for him? (10:46-52)
