Introduction:
It surely is easy to get comfortable. This world promotes comfortableness. This world promotes, idleness. Both of which are shown in our daily actions and are the direct opposite of what God intends for our lives. Today, we will be looking at a few truths regarding man and sin, and His warning, that He gives all believers.
1 John 3:7–10 NKJV
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.
Let no one deceive you: John here is refuting a life that claims to be of God, but resembles to out workings of the Devil.
If a man knows God, he will Obey God- Weirsbe
Weirsbe takes time to describe who the devil is:
Satan- Adversary or enemy
Devil- Accuser
Abaddon or Apollyon- Destroyer
The prince of the world.
Whatever you refer to him as just remember is chief role is to oppose Christ. The contrast here is that we have a Sinless God (1 John 3:5) against the devil who an do nothing but sin.
“destroy” in verse 8 does not mean to wipe out, but rather to rob of power.
Also in verse 8 it reminds us that some children are so like their parents that you couldn’t lose the, om a crowd. This is true of God’s children.
There are a couple of observations regarding sin and the position of man in contrast to God.
Sin is lawlessness (Romans 4:15; 1 John 5:17)
In Him There is no sin (2 Cor 5:21; 1 John 2:29
He is righteous ( 1 John 1:2; 1 John 3:8)
The devil has sinned from the beginning (John 8:44; 1 John 3:10.
Lawlessness is already at work (Anti-Christ) (1 John 2:18)
The lawless one will be revealed
The Lord will consume (John 16:33)
Sin always begins with delight (Romans 1:32; 1 Cor 13:6)
Men become children of God through the new birth while there is no birth for the children of the devil. We become a child of lawlessness when we imitate the devils behavior.
In contrast, Jesus cam to destroy the works of the devil. The Lord, could have destroyed him with one word but instead came to suffer, bleed, and die that He might annul the works of the devil. McDonald submits, “if it cost the Savior so much to put away sin, what should our attitude for those of us who have trusted Him as Savior?
1 John 3:10 NKJV
10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.
2 Thessalonians 2:1–10 NKJV
1 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
While the gnostics made great pretensions as to their knowledge , they were very careless about their personal lives.
Little children, let no one deceive you.
Counterfeit christian were trying to convince true believers that a person could be saved and still practice sin. John does not deny that Christians sin, but he did deny that Christians can live in sin. A person who can enjoy deliberate sin and who does not feel convicted or experience God’s chastening had better examine himself to see whether or not he is really born of God.
The first time we see “Little children” in chapter two John describes the need to be connected to the Father. Our Bible is our anchor- Excited to discuss what the Bible is at camp next week.
The Solution:
2 Thess 2:13-17
This is a great challenge to the church today:
1)Give thanks for your salvation often. Bound= Obligation
2) Stand fast and hold the traditions which we were taught (1 Cor 16:13; Rom. 6:17; 1 Cor. 11:2; 2 Thess. 3:6; Jude 3)
3) Comfort your hearts ( 1 Cor 1:8) *
4) Get established in every good word and work. (Get prepared- Be found being like him (1 John 3:2-3) Ephesians 6:10-11
King Asa and King Jehoshaphat comparison-
By focusing on finishing well, we will in turn live our lives well- always ready for the return.
