Civil War Surrender Brings Life Not Retribution
After a long night and day of marching, Lee and the exhausted Army of Northern Virginia made camp just east of Appomattox Courthouse on April 8. Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant had sent him a letter on the night of April 7, following confrontations between their troops at Cumberland Church and Farmville, suggesting Lee surrender. The Southern general refused. Grant replied, again suggesting surrender to end the bloodshed. Lee responded, saying in part, "I do not think the emergency has arisen to call for the surrender of this army," though he offered to meet Grant at 10 the next morning between picket lines to discuss a peaceful outcome. Having watched the battle through field glasses—Lee then said, "Then there is nothing left for me to do but go and see General Grant, and I would rather die a thousand deaths." But meeting General Grant at the Mclean house, Lee said "We are pressed and are ready to surrender. What are your terms?" Surprisingly it wasn't judgment. It wasn't prison. It wasn't retribution … The terms were to stop fighting and to start living. Give up your weapons, go home and plant your fields. The soldiers who hadn't eaten in days were given meal rations, horses and mules to plow fields. The war was over but for many people, life had just begun.

Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV
13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

The Whole Heart Must be Yielded

Why is it so hard to change? Why do we struggle with change? The reason why is because the Bible says in Isa 1:5-6
Isaiah 1:5–6 (CSB)
5 ... Why do you keep on rebelling? The whole head is hurt, and the whole heart is sick.
6 From the sole of the foot even to the head, no spot is uninjured [or “There is no soundness in it] — wounds, welts, and festering sores not cleansed, bandaged, or soothed with oil.
Thus we are told that the only way is unreserved, unconditional surrender or as the servant of the Lord put it, “The whole heart must be yielded to God.”
God wants to set us free, but freedom and complete transformation is only possible when we yield ourselves completely to God.
What does it mean to surrender to God? What does entire consecration look like? I can answer the question with this brief story. A woman approached her pastor and asked the question...
10,000 Sermon Illustrations (Consecration)
“Will you please tell me in a word … what your idea of consecration is?” Holding out a blank sheet of paper the pastor replied, “It is to sign your name at the bottom of this blank sheet, and to let God fill it in as He will.”
There is an additional reason that we need to yield oursleves wholly to God in order to be victorious in our Christian walk.
Steps to Christ Chapter 5—Consecration

The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness.

Yes friends the greatest battle that was ever fought was not WWI, WWII which combined claimed millions of lives, no friends, the most challening battle is the battle of self control and submission to the will of God.

God Invites Us to Yield

Although total surrender is necessary, God does not force the will, no He invites us to yield… willingly.
Isaiah 1:18 NKJV
18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
Total consecration also means that we are invited to give up everything that would seperate us from God, such as:
The Love of Money
The Love of Reputation and Honor
Living a life of “selffish ease and freedom from responsibility.”
Criticism of others and faultfinding

Barriers to Yielding Ourselves

What are some of the barriers to surrender?
Galatians 3:2–3 NKJV
2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?— 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
One of the barriers to surrender is attempting to live the Christian life in our own strength and substituting works for consecration. When are hearts are not moved by what Ellen White calls “deep sense of the love of Christ”, we will try to gain heaven through pleasing God with good works, and such relgion is worthless with God.
Another barrier is the underestimation of what God requires of us. An easy going crossless Christianity is very appealing on the surface, but it those who cling to such empty faith run the risk of eternal ruin.
Luke 14:26–27 NCV
26 “If anyone comes to me but loves his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, or sisters—or even life—more than me, he cannot be my follower. 27 Whoever is not willing to carry his cross and follow me cannot be my follower.

In his book I Surrender, Patrick Morley writes that the church’s integrity problem is in the misconception “that we can add Christ to our lives, but not subtract sin. It is a change in belief without a change in behavior.” He goes on to say, “It is revival without reformation, without repentance.”

Quoted in John The Baptizer, Bible Study Guide by C. Swindoll, p. 16

Again, another barrier to surrender is internally inquiring “How much can I get away with inorder to meet God’s minimum required score?”
Steps to Christ Chapter 5—Consecration

Those who feel the constraining love of God, do not ask how little may be given to meet the requirements of God; they do not ask for the lowest standard, but aim at perfect conformity to the will of their Redeemer. With earnest desire they yield all and manifest an interest proportionate to the value of the object which they seek. A profession of Christ without this deep love is mere talk, dry formality, and heavy drudgery.

The most damaging of all barriers is believing that God is pleased to see his children suffer; He wants to deprive of us what will bring us joy and happiness. If this were so, He never would have given up his only Son, and He never would have promised us eternal life in the absense of evil and suffering.
Steps to Christ Chapter 5—Consecration

The divine requirements call upon us to shun those indulgences that would bring suffering and disappointment, that would close to us the door of happiness and heaven. The world’s Redeemer accepts men as they are, with all their wants, imperfections, and weaknesses; and He will not only cleanse from sin and grant redemption through His blood, but p 47 will satisfy the heart-longing of all who consent to wear His yoke, to bear His burden. It is His purpose to impart peace and rest to all who come to Him for the bread of life. He requires us to perform only those duties that will lead our steps to heights of bliss to which the disobedient can never attain. The true, joyous life of the soul is to have Christ formed within, the hope of glory.

James 1:17 NKJV
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

How Can I Yield My Heart to God?

Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV
13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Steps to Christ Chapter 5—Consecration

Many are inquiring, “How am I to make the surrender of myself to God?” You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slavery to doubt, and controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises and resolutions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your affections. The knowledge of your broken promises and forfeited pledges weakens your confidence in your own sincerity, and causes you to feel that God cannot accept you; but you need not despair. What you need to understand is the true force of the will.

Steps to Christ Chapter 5—Consecration

You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure.

Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV
13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
To search for God with all our hearts is to choose to be a Christian. When we are confronted with the choice to live for self or to live for Christ, to search after to God means to choose to be a Christian and seek after Him, seek to please Him.
