In the chapters prior to this Paul has been masterfully going from issue to issue. He has covered a lot of ground and in chapter six he addresses another issue that may, and usually does in the life of Christians.
In chapters 1-3 he builds the case that all are under sin and its consequences
Chapters 4-5 we see the case made for salvation by grace through faith! (Romans 5:21)
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
He finishes 5 talking about how grace abounds and it does!
The aforementioned being stated grace abounds and there's more than enough forgiveness but it’s not a license, rather grace is the catalyst that changes us!
In chapter 6 he begins to tell us about the benefits of Grace and all the change it should bring!
There's an issue and it's one many of us struggle with and I call it spiritual institutionalization. We need these keys to victory!
“These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized.”- The Shawshank redemption
We are not able to function to the heights and spans that Grace allows us to; rather we go back to what we once knew.
Paul begins to battle this subject beautifully.
( Romans 6:1-2) Paul starts with a rhetorical question and a strong answer! - Christians are dead to sin!
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Realize (Romans 6:3)
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Paul starts with telling them something, he actually commands them to know!
Doctrine determines direction. Theology is best revealed in actions .
We are dead to sin! (Romans 6:2-5 )
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
We did not literally die but rather God identified with us on that cross!
Mark 15:28 - He identified with us!
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
Romans 6:3, Colossians 2:20, Colossians 3:3, 1 Peter 2:24, Galatians 2:20
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Baptism is an image of this change!
Romans 6:5
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Dead and up in the newness of life!
The Old master is dead! Know you’re free! ( Romans 6:6)
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Sin has no hold on us anymore!
The you before Jesus saved you is dead!
Before salvation we were slaves to sin!
John 8:34-36
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Jesus frees!
Not only are we dead to sin but now we are alive to righteousness!
“Not serve sin”
Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Reckon ( Romans 6:11)
Reckon is more than just a guess but rather “It means “to take into account, to calculate, to estimate.”
Reckoning is simply that step of faith that says, “What God says about me in the Bible is now true in my life. I am crucified with Christ.” Reckoning is faith in action, resting on the Word of God in spite of circumstances or feelings. - Warren Weirsbe
We do right not by our strength either but it’s through Jesus!
Our Lord!
We can not do anything without him!
John 5:4- 5:5
For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
To Reckon is by faith
Galatians 3:11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
2 Corinthians 5:7
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Respond (Romans 6: 13) “Yield”
Because of what we know and believe we act differently!
Because we actually are different
Sin won't rule because grace has changed me!
We can now live lives that are pleasing to him!
Yield , Yield, Yield
Be meek and apt to obey!
