ME:
I have heard many times something to the idea that the “Bible is out dated”. Or that they believe in God but the Bible is too restrictive. One of the most dangerous is the idea that some of Scripture is true but others are not. Even one author I greatly respects sees the words recorded in the gospels hold more truth than those recorded by Paul.
Desires for comfort
We:
We likely can all think of friends or family that do not want to follow the faith because they ‘know better’ or maybe whose greed and desire for comfort is beyond the church (cases with theft inside various churches)
WE ARE CHARGED TO TEACH TRUTH AND BE CONTENT IN HIM.
God:
Pray. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing in your sight, o Lord, our rock and our Redeemer.
4th call against false teachers
1 Timothy 6:2b–10 (ESV)
Teach and urge these things. 3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Teach and urge
Encourage
Teaches different from Christ
Not only what he said
All Scripture os God-breathed
This would refer to all of Scripture
Heresy, heretical. People that receive a “word” that supersedes Scripture. Gnosticism.
Teachers puffed up
Becoming an Elder too early.
1 Timothy 3:6 ESV
6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Looks for controversy
1 Timothy 3:3 ESV
3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
We see the list of qualities found in these false teachers. It is something we can look for in false teachers today.
1 Timothy 6:4–5 ESV
4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
unhealthy craving for controversy and
for quarrels about words,
which produce envy,
dissension,
slander,
evil suspicions,
and constant friction among people
who are depraved in mind and
deprived of the truth,
imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
These false teachers ultimately see godliness as a path to gain
A way to make money
And prosperity gospel
Students that get too… much. Cage stage. Look for fights to show that they know better. Tim B at ETS.
WE ARE CHARGED TO TEACH TRUTH AND BE CONTENT IN HIM.
What should we aim for?
Godliness with contentment
WE ARE CHARGED TO TEACH TRUTH AND BE CONTENT IN HIM.
If we have our basic needs met, that should be enough
Not wrong to work for more or strive for more, but we should be content with the basics.
1 Timothy 6:9–10 ESV
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
