What do you call a sick eagle? Illeagle
I just want to go through a little bit of what we looked at last week.. we looked at the parable of the laborers in the vineyard, and we talked a little bit about how this parable is to show us how the Kingdom of Heaven, the kingdom of God, is not like the kingdom of this world, and when it we look at it it doesnt make sense to us, because it is so different from the way we live, and we talked about how the parable shows us that Jesus wants us to get the work, and if we are a part of the kingdom thats what we would do, and Today’s scripture, what you need to see is that these verses today, are very similar in that respect… it is going to show us that the kingdom of God is not like the kingdom of the world...
Jesus is leading his disciples toward Jerusalem… hes not even from there… he knows the city, but hes not from there…hes entering a place hes not from… it reminds me of us coming here… we don’t know this place...
but look at what happens as they enter Jerusalem they want to know why they are going there…
but here is what is weird.. all Jews are going there at this time… to celebrate the passover.... from Exodus 2....
And let me kind of explain passover to you because its so important to this story, and what Jesus is about to do in Jerusalem...
God speaks to Moses in the form of a burning bush, and hes like go tell Pharoh to free my people, because the people of Israel were all enslaved in Egypt, and Moses is like, I can’t do it man, who will I tell them sent me? and hes all Yahweh… he is that he is.... which is just amazing… right… and so he goes to Pharoh...
let my people go....and he’s all No way dude… i like it…
So then start the plagues
Water to blood…
Frogs...
Lice or gnats - i lived in south georgia…miserable
affected only the Egyptians wild animals
a plague on the livestock
Boils on the people and livestock
Hailstorm
Locusts
darkness for three days....
Finally this is where passover comes from....
21 Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb.
22 Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning.
23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
24 You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever.
25 And when you come to the land that the Lord will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service.
26 And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’
27 you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’ ” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.
28 Then the people of Israel went and did so; as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.
So this is what they were celebrating, this passover, that God allowed his people to be set free… and so the people of Isreal would celebrate this year after year...
God calls himself the destroyer in the passover story… not how I knew him exodus 12 thats how he recalls himself…
So they are going to celebrate this time with the people, but they knew what was going on…but they aren’t seeing it in the way that Jesus did… as they travel there are people with them who are assuredly thinking that Jesus is going to go and setup his kingdom in Jerusalem and they are ready to fight if they have to… but some of them probably think they are just going to celebrate the passover lamb, but they don’t realize the real passover lamb, the ultimate sacrifice is with them… and their eyes are all wrong..
SO Jesus is leading the disciples into jerusalem and pulls them aside.... because he wants to make sure their focus is right....
I think about Shawn when he’s coaching, and he calls the girls over and they are kind of playing out and sometimes he calls the whole team together and he tells them hey we gotta get it together (WHAT IS HIS THING HE SAYS TO GET THEM ON TASK) or sometimes he may just call one girl over and say look they are weak on the left side, we have to exploit that, we have to move the ball there… and this is what is about to happen here.... he is getting them focused telling them the game plan
Here is what it says in Matthew 20....
18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death
19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
And right now they aren’t focused they aren’t seeing this trip in the way that Jesus is seeing it... as they travel there are people with them who are assuredly thinking that Jesus is going to go and setup his kingdom in Jerusalem and they are ready to fight if they have to… but some of them probably think they are just going to celebrate the passover lamb, but they don’t realize the real passover lamb, the ultimate sacrifice is with them… and their eyes are all wrong..
And they need their minds straight because as they go they are probably bumping into people they hadnt seen in a while, and he wants them to go forward in that and be focused… but even after he has told them what is going to happen a third time, they STILL don’t get it...
Mark 10 more info on this situation....Jesus leads them into Jerusalem… most of us wouldn’t do that.. most of us run away if we know trouble is coming.... I remember when Josiah was little.... had I listened to my wife I would have ran away from that… and in this story… Jesus knows, but he is leading the way
People think it must not mean as much or hurt as much because he is the son of God.... and you know what happens as he enters Jerusalem.... he gets down on his knees and he begs God to take it from him… but he tells him whatever you want I will do it… and its not easy… but I will do it....
And this is the third time he has had to refocus them… In matthew 16 he walks to peter and says who do you say that I am Peter.... You are the Christ… you are the son of the living God.... impressive… and right after that he says thank you… glad you know that… but I still haveto suffer and die and be raised up again… and he says no way Jesus.... I am determined that it cant happen… bro I got you.... and Jesus replies to him… get behind me satan....
The second time that he reminds them of what he has to do is in chapter 17.... the transfiguration… Elijah on one hand and moses on the other… three disciples… Peter James and John and these guys are spell bound over what is going on… cloud goes by and speaks to them.... thats my son… I am well pleased… listen to him… so you would think that after this mountain top experience that Jesus would want them to stay there… but as they are walking down the mountain he says dont tell anyone.... until I am raised… so he is telling them you dont have to stay up in the clouds… focus!
in verse 19… he says again
19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
They couldn’t imagine what was about to happen… they’re eyes were not seeing right… the passover lamb that we celebrate is JEsus....
Hes mocked as well… just cruelly taunted… to feel like less than human almost....
And this story should do the same for you… it should have you refocus and realize what you need to see,…
Much like this we need to keep our eyes on him and follow him even when we don’t understand....
