Genesis 1:1-5
Genesis 1:1-5
One of the most read chapters in all of scripture is without a doubt, the first Chapter of Genesis. One of the most profound questions in the human mind is related to the beginning of creation.
How did it all come to be?
What started the process?
How could everything originate from absolutely nothing?
As complicated as life forms are, they could not have just happened as the result of an explosion, could they? Of course not!
With the variety of life forms on land, in the air, and in the oceans, surely we are not to believe that all occured as the result of a massive bang, are we? Of course not!
Could all life forms, including humans, occur by chance or evolution? Of course not!
God created everything!
For those who would question the validity of God’s creation account, the Lord might one day ask you as He asked Job out of the whirlwind...
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.
We must be very cautious to not purport to know God’s business or to possess understanding when we don’t have it.
Who does man think he is, to dispute or instruct God?
I’ll tell you this, when God finished pointing out His own omniscience, His omnipotence, and His omnipresence, Job was more than ready to confess his own frail, insignificance.
The Lord said to Job...
2 “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it.”3 Then Job answered the Lord and said, 4 “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to Thee? I lay my hand on my mouth.
Job figured out his own insignificance, whatever he had to say would fall short. The Lord cannot be instructed by man.
With countless questions regarding the smallest details of a vastly complicated universe, planet earth, and its life forms, there can be only one true response that stands to reason and that is this …In the beginning, GOD!
With close observation, beholding the intricate attention to the magnificent details of our surroundings, after scrutinizing the proof set before us, one can only reach the same conclusive resolution as the Psalmist did in....
11 “Worthy art Thou, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou didst create all things, and because of Thy will they existed, and were created.”
Any sensible eye must gaze with admiration and astonishment on the world and its universe. What we see is nothing less than the handy work of God.
From the tiniest micro organism seen from a microscope, to the vast galaxies and solar systems viewed in the most powerful telescopes, we marvel at the creation.
We can all agree, that our world is a spectacular thing to behold.
However, if this created world is amazing to you, you would be astonished by its Creator. His glory outshines the sun. He is infinitely greater than His creation. Not only is God the Creator of all things, He is the rightful owner of all things.
The Psalmist said...
11 The heavens are Thine, the earth also is Thine; The world and all it contains, Thou hast founded them.
Not only is God the Creator and rightful owner of all things, but His creation reveals God Himself to humanity.
His creation gives more than enough evidence that only …GOD ALMIGHTY MADE IT!
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
It is through our amazement of God’s creation, that we are permitted to see God’s eternal power and divine nature.
7 “But now ask the beasts, and let them teach you; And the birds of the heavens, and let them tell you.8 “Or speak to the earth, and let it teach you; And let the fish of the sea declare to you.9 “Who among all these does not know That the hand of the Lord has done this,
Even nature itself teaches there is a God, you see.
Those who deny this truth, simply deny the facts and evidence laid before their very eyes. Someone wrote, “I don’t have the faith to be an Atheist.”
!For sure! It takes greater faith to believe that all things began from an explosion, than to believe the simple truth that this world was created, sustained, and is held together, by God, our Creator.
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.2 And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.5 And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
The title of this message is: The Day The Light Came On
The very first verse in all the Bible, makes a crystal clear claim...
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
This statement is the foundation of everything written in the word of God. If we do not believe that, In the beginning God created the heaven(s) and the earth, then the rest of what is written will not be believed either.
Many have tried to discredit God as Creator, with science, however, true science only reveals, all the more, how amazing God the Creator is.
As one beholds the magnificence of God’s creation, how can he NOT see the very finger prints of God?
I’ll have to say, we should be amazed... at:
every sunrise, and every sunset
every change in weather pattern or change of seasons
every single drop of rain and every falling snow flake
every creature that flies, walks, crawls, or swims
Every intricate detail of the world points to its glorious Creator!
Without question, we know that God created the heavens and the earth.
Now, the word of God tells us about the original state of the earth.
2 And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
We are only told in scripture, what God wants us to know.
The starting point that we are given is that the earth was formless and void,
The earth had not yet been formed by the power of God.
The earth had no life in it.
And darkness was over the surface of the deep which indicates that the earth was covered in deep water with no light present, not even in the heavens. At this point, it’s in total and complete darkness.
The earth was in need of a Builder and Maker.
So it is with a dry and thirsty soul that sits empty, dark and void of life.
8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light
The children of light, were formerly, darkness, but now, being in the Lord they now walk as children of light. This transformation takes places on by the transforming power of God.
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
You see, the world was in a state of darkness, it was a desolate place.
Likewise, we who now walk with Christ, once sat in the dark deadness of our trespasses and sins.
Until one day or perhaps over many days, something marvelous, something indescribable occured, the Spirit of God began to move over our darkness. Out of nowhere, the light came on and showed us our spiritual condition. The Spirit of God hovered over us and showed us God’s holiness and convicted us of our lost condition and lead us out of the deep darkness of sin. You see, it took the moving of the Spirit of God in our hearts, to draw us to repentance and salvation.
With this in mind…now...Notice here in verse 2, how that ...the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
The Holy Spirit of God is seen here, performing a divine work, in the creation and transformation of the physical world. His movement is a hovering, fluttering movement over the surface of the waters. The waters are being stirred by the Holy Spirit of God. So God the Holy Spirit is seen stirring the waters, as God the Father spoke to the Son, God the Son brought all things into being as the Father willed it to be so.
There are no coincidences in God’s word. Everything is for a purpose. Jesus came as the son of a carpenter. He also said, I am going to prepare a place for you. Jesus is a carpenter, a builder, a creator… The apostle John said of Jesus...
3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Now notice in this next verse, God is speaking to someone, and I believe its His pre-incarnate Son.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
With the stirring of the waters by the Holy Spirit of God in the backdrop, God the Father spoke these first recorded, precious words... “Let there be light”
Do you realize that if God had not spoke those words, there would be no light even now?
Had He not called me out of darkness, into His marvelous light, I would be in spiritual darkness right now, at this moment, without salvation, and without any hope whatsoever.
But God said, let him see, and I was given spiritual eyes to see, and I’m more than satisfied!
4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.
God, by His own design, looked upon the light to see that it was good.
Throughout the Bible, spiritually speaking, the light is symbolizes good, and the darkness symbolizes evil. The light reveals and the darkness conceals. The light exposes and the darkness hides, yet nothing is hidden from God.
God made a distinction between light and darkness, He made a distinction between good and evil. The two are separated. Light and darkness disassociate. They can’t occupy the same space at the same time.
Here in Genesis, God separated the light from the darkness...
5 And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
So The Day The Light Came On was the first day, and so it continues even now.
The bible warns us,
