Prayer-the practice of communicating with a deity Communication-the transfer of information in any form between two people
-Do not pray like the hypocrites (love to be seen and heard by others)
HYPOCRISY-the characteristic of acting in a way that is inconsistent with one’s character, belief system, or speech
REFLECTION POINT-We can all point out hypocrisy in others, but the bible says in
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
-Instead, pray in your room, in secret
IN SECRET-this is so you can eliminate distractions and focus on what you need to say to God. It is not meant to be a secret or to hide your faith. Here the word secret means
Do not pray empty phrases as the Gentiles (they think they will be heard by their many words)
-Instead, pray like this:
Our Father in Heaven
Our Father in Heaven
Father-God, the creator of all things including humans
Heaven-the place above all places, where His throne is and our future home is, the place He can see everything from
Acknowledge His omnipotence and omniscience
A psalm of David.
The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness,
the world and those who live in it,
because he has founded it on the seas,
and has established it on the rivers.
Who may ascend the mountain of Yahweh?
And who may stand in his holy place?
He who is innocent of hands and pure of heart,
who does not lift up his soul to falseness,
and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from Yahweh,
and justice from the God of his salvation.
Such is the sort of those who seek him,
those who seek your face, even Jacob. Selah
Lift up your heads, O gates,
and rise up, O ancient doorways,
that the king of glory may enter.
Who is the king of glory?
Yahweh, strong and mighty;
Yahweh, mighty in war!
Lift up your heads, O gates,
and lift up, O ancient doorways,
that the king of glory may enter.
Who is the king of glory?
Yahweh of hosts,
He is the king of glory! Selah
Hallowed be Your name
Hallowed be Your name
And he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Hallowed—honor His name, praise Him with His titles and thanksgiving
Your kingdom come
Your kingdom come
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Your will be done
Your will be done
Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
on earth as it is in heaven
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
Give us this day our daily bread
Daily bread-not physical needs but spiritual needs. Remember the secret place?
But he answered, “It is written,
“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
and forgive us our debts,
and forgive us our debts,
Our sins have been forgiven as far as the east is from the west, yet we still must repent in order to keep ourselves on the right focus. We let sin in and never face it then sin will once again damage our walk with Jesus
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
And lead us not into temptation;
And lead us not into temptation;
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
but deliver us from evil.
