Death was foretold as a consequence of sin in (Gen 3:19) In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

In this verse, “to die” refers to physical death. The word is used in several senses in the Bible:
1. It speaks of the actual physical act of dying (Genesis 5:5
2. It speaks of the period after one has died (Genesis 27:7); The final state of those who are not born again is called the “second death” (Revelation 20:14). Physical death that is the result of sin does not affect only the body, because a person who has died is still conscious, whether he is in hell or in heaven (Luke 16:19-31).
