Sermon Tone Analysis

Let’s worship Christ the Lord.

Revelation 5:1-14.

As we continue our heavenly view, John describes in this vision, his eyewitness account of events taking place around the throne.

As this revelation of Christ continues to unfold, we will see that Jesus is the center of all worship taking place.

William Temple said, “Worship is the submission of all nature to God.”

We the church have a huge responsibility and privilege to worship and witness for the lamb of glory.

The scroll.

John observes a seven sealed scroll in the hand of Him [God] who sits on the throne.

In Roman law, the last will and testament was sealed with seals of seven witnesses.

Could this be Christ’ title and deed or a scroll of judgment decreed from the courtroom in heaven.

Ezekiel 2:9-10 describes this scroll in his vision and so does Daniel 12:4.

Typically a scroll is not written on the back, but maybe this represents an abundance of context in which nothing could be added.

The scroll is rolled up with seven seals located across the overlapped edges.

These seals will need to be broken before the scroll can be read.

The scene.

John observes a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and loose its seals?”

They look everywhere in heaven, on the earth, and even under the earth and no one can open the scroll.

John begins to weep but one of the elders tells John not to weep because the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of Jesse has prevailed.

As John looks through the crowd of 4 living creatures, the 24 elders, there stands the lamb who exhibits the marks of being slain [slaughtered as a sacrifice].

The /horns /represent power and authority [all powerful-omnipotent], the /eyes/ represent His knowledge [all knowing-omniscience], the /seven Spirits of God/ [ever present-omnipresent].

 

Once Christ takes the scroll out of the hand of the One who sits on the throne, the 4 living creatures and the 24 elders fall down before the Lamb-they have a harp and golden bowls full of incense that represent the prayers of the saints.

Psalm 141: 2 says, “Let my prayer be set before You as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”

These prayers of God’s people fill the courts of heaven with a pleasant aroma which is treasured by God and the atmosphere is set for worshipping the Lamb of God.

Why do we worship?

Because of whom He is.

Lion of the tribe of Judah [Gen.49:9,

10]-this represents Messiahship.

Ancient of Days [Isaiah 11:1, 10]-this represents His preexistence and eternality.

The Lamb-His sacrifice produces our salvation.

In the Old Testament *Isaac* asked, “Where is the Lamb?”

In the New Testament, *John the Baptist* exclaims, “Behold the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world.”

*In heaven* all proclaim, “Worthy is the Lamb.”

Where He is.

Christ is not in a manger; He is not on a cross or in a tomb, but He is the exalted one of heaven.

He is the center of attention.

All creation, the redeemed, and the angels all worship Christ the Lord.

What He does.

He is the only one worthy to take the scroll.

Worship hymn- Christ alone is worthy!

Gospel song- Christ was violently slain to redeem us from our sin.

Missionary song- Every kindred [common ancestor]; Every tongue [common language]; Every people [common race]; Every nation [common rule].

Devotional hymn- Announces our position in Christ, a kingdom of priest.

Prophetic hymn-We shall reign on the earth.

This worship service reveals to us that all of creation is praising the Lord.
