Psalm 34:1–7 ESV
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together! I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Psalm 34:11–15 ESV
Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.
Psalm 34:17–20 ESV
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
Stress-Anxiety- Wellness
There are many songs discussing the idea of how the mind can be difficult to understand.
In his incredible Book bringing awareness to mental health: Shook One, Charlemane the God (breakfast club) opens up using a song that is very familiar to many. Mind is playing tricks on me!!
In their classic “Mind is Playing Tricks on Me,” from their debut album We Can’t Be Stopped, The Geto Boys capture the reality of Post Traumatic Syndrome within urban communities. Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill vividly describe the various mental states of paranoia, schizophrenia, and depression. “My Mind Playing Tricks On” Me” was a reflection of Scarface’s own inner turmoil, at the time struggling as a manic-depressive. The truth behind the song gives it an authenticity that is still felt almost 30 years later.
They talked about how life was where they grew up. . and how it affected them. I had no clue what they were talking about . . . i was in elementary when it came out.
All of the legends of hip hop had songs talking about the mind: Biggie suicidal thoughts, DMX SLippin, Tupac so many tears
People have been talking about this before the hashtags were popular. .
the Bible gives us story after story . . person after person dealing with anxiety
Our text chronicles a man after God’s own heart who dealt with anxiety. The meat of this psalms comes from 1sam, chapter 21
David- king to be of Israel, God has anointed him, he has slain Goliath, he is winning battles for Saul. . He’s a mighty man of valor
and he also on the run. Saul is jealous of him and is trying to kill david.
we could do a mental wellness expose’ on Saul. . . but we will focus on David for now.
he’s on the run and when we get to 1sam 21 David is overwhelmed, everywhere he goes he looking over his shoulder, peeking around corners wondering “what have i done to receive such grave misfortunes.”
His life is on the line, and 1 sam 21. . . they are questioning whether or not he should be able to eat sacred bread. .
He gets into the company of King Achish. . Achish taunts David and those words tormented david and the text says this .
1 Samuel 21:10–15 ESV
And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

Stress

Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. Stress is your body's reaction to a challenge or demand. In short bursts, stress can be positive, such as when it helps you avoid danger or meet a deadline.

Anxiety

1. a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
2. a nervous disorder characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks.
Scripture to combat Fear
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind.”Deuteronomy 31:8 “He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”Isaiah 43:1 “Don’t fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine.”Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand”
Scripture to combat Anxiety
Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”John 14:27 “Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.”
