And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
Themes:
Promises: God made a promise to Abraham that to him and his descendants, I will give you this land. Abraham held on to this promise of God. He didn’t forget what God said.....many times we get amnesia and we forget the promises that God made towards us, we forget His words, but Abraham held tightly to the word of God. There was a time when it seemed like nothing was going to work out for him, but nevertheless he remembered the promise of God. God told Abraham....to YOUR seed will I give this land. Abraham knew that if his son Issac married someone outside of his kin folk (we talking down the line now.....and besides this is pre-law), Abraham knew that if Issac married anyone else that his actions would nullify God’s blessings. Don’t let your actions nullify God’s blessings.
Faith: Abraham held on to God’s promises in faith. The Bible tells us in the in Hebrews
For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
So now:
And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Abraham staggered not at the promise of God, matter of fact his faith grew stronger and when his faith grew stronger....He gave glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises!
So now God blesses Abraham with a son named Issac. If God did it before.....He’ll do it again! So now on his death bed, Abraham tells his servant.....to go look for his son’s wife.....and as a matter of fact.....I know God is going to do it because He’s going to send his angel. I come to tell you tonight.....God didn’t bring you all this way to fail you now......HOLD ON JUST A LITTLE WHILE LONGER! BE STEADFAST!
Steadfastness:
Abraham knew that there was a possibility that at first his servant may not be successful, sometimes the blessings of God may not come immediately. But, you have to stay where God has placed you. You have to do it exactly how God tells you to do it. You’ll miss out on your blessing when you go out of God’s will. Sometimes you might find yourself in what seems like a place of stagnation, seems like your not making any headway, but if God told you that I’m going to bless you in this place......stay there until God blesses you. I might be getting hard on your job, but if God says stay there.....then you stay there.....don’t move until God blesses you!
“He will send his angel ahead of you, and he will see to it that you find a wife there for my son.”
God is going to send his angel ahead of you and He is going to see to it......that things work out for you! He’s going to see to it that a way is made for you! He’s going to see to it that the door is open for you!
On many occasions throughout scripture the LORD would send an angel to intervene on behalf of the saints of God.
On one occasion, God sent an angel to fight on behalf of the people of God:
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
On another occasion, Peter was locked up in prison for preaching the gospel. Herod had already executed James the Apostle and he was going to be next. But thank God, the church was interceding on Peter’s behalf. God heard the prayers of the righteous and God sent an angel to loose Peter. When the angel came, the bible says that a light shined in the prison, do you hear what I’m telling, a light shined into darkness. The angel showed up and Peter didn’t even realize it. When you least expect it, God will deliver you.......”THESE BLESSINGS SHALL COME UPON YOU AND OVER TAKE YOU”. The angel smote Peter on the side told him get up, get dress, put your clothes on and follow me. I believe that when he got up the chains fell off, when he took a step toward the cell door....the cell door came open, the passed the first ward and then the second ward, and Peter thought he was dreaming, but when he got to the last gate and stepped out in the city he realized that he wasn’t dream....but that God sent an angel to deliver him.
Now here it is, your trying to figure out how it’s going to be done, here it is you’re trying to figure out how you’re going to come out, How is God going to do it this time.......TURN TO YOUR NEIGHBOR AND TELL YOUR NEIGHBOR GOD SAID.....I’M GOING TO SEND AN ANGEL BEFORE YOU......AND IT’S GOING TO WORK OUT FOR YOUR GOOD!
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
So now, the servant goes to look for Issac a wife. He knew what was at stake and he wanted to be a good and obedient servant: Good things happen to those who seek to do good and obey God’s will. The servant begins to pray to God:
And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
Oh Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today. You ought to lift your hands right now and pray this prayer.....its good that we learn to pray these types of prayers that we see in the Bible. You ought to lift your hands and say “Oh LORD, God of Abraham, God of Issac, God of Jacob, give me success today and show kindness to me.”
So the servant prays this prayer.....let’s cut across the field now:
The bible says:
And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
Before he had stop speaking......God had already answered his prayer. I want to speak this into someones life tonight....that before you leave this service tonight.......GOD IS GOING TO ANSWER YOUR PRAYER......BEFORE YOU LEAVE THIS SERVICE GOD HAS ALREADY STARTED TURNING IT AROUND! Now listen, if you don’t have the faith to believe and receive it......it’s not going to happen.....but I believe and I speak prophetically that in the name of Jesus Christ......God is already turning it around.
How is that possible you may ask: God said:
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
