1. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. John 17:14
John 17:14 ESV
14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
a. Jesus Gives us God’s word which separates us from the world. 17:14
i. Jesus is not of this world. He is distinct
b. When we receive God’s word through Christ we become new and separate
i. 2 Corinthians 5:17-17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
ii. Our old selves pass away. Our minds are no longer focused, driven by the flesh
c. Sanctification (oneness with Christ) makes the world hate us. We become a fraternity of the hated
i. Romans 8:7-7For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot
2. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world John 17:15
a. Separation from the world does not mean hatred of the world
i. Key phrase “I do not ask you to take them out of the world”
ii. Greek Airo-“To take” remove from a certain place, mental or emotional state.
b. Separation is the avoidance of the Devil
i. Key phrase “To keep them from the evil one”
ii. Greek “Tereo”-keep-to maintain in safety from injury harm or danger
iii. Staying away from the Devil’s schemes and sin
1. It doesn’t say sin it says “the evil one”
2. 2 Timothy 2:24-26-24And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.
iv. The world leads us to sin
1. Gal 5:19-Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these
c. We are called to be in the world to share the gospel
i. Matthew 28:19-20-Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age
ii. John 17: 18-As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth
3. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth-John 17:17-18
a. His word is Truth-dependable, conforms with reality
i. Jesus is asking God to Sanctify them with His word. God’s word is like soap that cleans us (get a better analogy!).
ii. 2 Timothy 3:16-17-Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work
iii. Hebrews 4:12-For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart
4. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. John 17:20-23
a. When we are sanctified together in Christ we become one
b. Jesus in Us; God in Jesus; Us in the world (verse 23)…so that the world may know that God sent Christ
