PUT ON

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;

Therefore = it sends you back to why he’s saying therefore. Which is chapter three
raised with Christ, seek things above
Set your mind on things above
Put to death
Put off and etc.
So here we have another command from Paul and it’s positive cause in the previous verse it says

put to death

Verse 5
Verse 9
And now it’s
Put on then, as or because YOU are God’s Chosen or elect of God. Set apart, sanctified for His purpose - talking to the Saints in Colossae,
You are holy, beloved.
AS CHRISTIANS, IF YOU ARE IN CHRIST, YOU ARE CHOSEN BY GOD, YOU ARE HOLY OR JUST
(JUST AS YOU HAVE NOT SIN) Me and you are made holy, loved by God.
SO CHURCH PUT ON, Those who are in Christ,
Tender mercies/compassionate/tender heart. The seat of emotions
Kindness
Humility ( not false humility in Col 2:18) but true humility. A humble mind in submission to those above us. We must learn from Jesus.
Matthew 11:29 NASB95
29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Meekness/gentleness/
Patience.
So if we want to be like Jesus, we, the Saints, called to be holy must PUT ON what God had already imputed in us because of our unity in Christ.
Verse 13

13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

No remember where we are in context:
Setting our minds on things above because we are now united in Christ, put on this and this,
SO THIS IS THE RESULT
Bearing (MIDDLE VOICE, the subject is acting with reference to itself, PRESENT TENSE, a continuous action)
and that word bearing means TO HOLD UP.
Bearing with one another
Forgiving one another (If someone has a complaint against another)
WE MUST DO IT as the Lord did it too.
Our relationship with God should affect our relationship with one another.

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

But above all these,
Above what?
referring back to clothe yourself or put on this
But above all things
PUT ON LOVE
Love = is the fulfillment of the law
1 Peter 4:8 NASB95
8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Love is the highest
The greatest commandment, Love God, Love others
Which binds all things together or which is the bond of perfection. It’s like the brace or the bandage when you fractured your body.
The idea of we as the church is one body, one family and what holds us? LOVE. We are tied together because of love.
we are bond of perfection (in completeness harmony)
So if we the church gonna be living out our union with Christ, it is gonna manifest itself in LOVE.
AGAIN CHURCH, THIS IS WHAT GOD HAS PUT IN US AND WE TAKE PART OF THAT BY PUTTING IN LOVE.
VERSE 15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

So Paul is telling us that we need to put on love and in addition let the peace of Christ. In the greek it’s an article, THE PEACE OF CHRIST, THE MESSIAH, THE CHRIST.
Let the peace of God rule(it has the idea to control on someones decision making, judge, umpire)
or in other words,
Let the peace of Christ control our thinking and decision making.
(Story when i got lost in the Philippines at the mall)
John 14:27 NASB95
27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
Peace of God rule in our hearts to which also you and I were called = IN ONE BODY.
BE THANKFUL =

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Let the Word of Christ (the bible) dwell, live in,
Richly
leading to
teaching (positive aspect)helping people to understand God’s Word
and admonishing (negative aspect) we need to understand that what we are doing is sinful, so stop it.
In all wisdom
so where does all wisdom came from?
Well it came from the Word of Christ.
If God’s Word is dwelling in us richly, it will result in you teaching, admonishing, and in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
One of my favorite hymns is
What a fellowship, what a joy divine Leaning on the everlasting arms What a blessedness, what a peace is mine Leaning on the everlasting arms
Leaning, leaning Safe and secure from all alarms
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine Heir of salvation, purchase of God Born of His spirit, washed in His blood
because he lives I can face tomorrow Because he lives All fear is gone Because I know He holds the future And life is worth the living Just because he lives
Do u now see that it’s affecting our relationship with God and others?
This can only happen if we are studying God’s Word
with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
