v.5
v.5
5 The righteousness of the blameless will smooth his way, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.
The contrast of the righteous and the wicked.
The righteous will have no questions about his direction.
The wicked doesn’t have the ability to discern his way.
vv.5 & 6 are similar.
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice, And He preserves the way of His godly ones. 9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice And equity and every good course. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 Discretion will guard you, Understanding will watch over you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things; 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who delight in doing evil And rejoice in the perversity of evil; 15 Whose paths are crooked, And who are devious in their ways;
8 Bless our God, O peoples, And sound His praise abroad, 9 Who keeps us in life And does not allow our feet to slip.
Righteousness preserves life in the person.
The wicked falls by his wickedness.
The wickedness that a wicked person commits will be the cause for judgment in life and at the judgment seat of Christ.
“The thought is that righteousness helps the godly person to avoid those things that could become stumbling blocks along his path in life. The wicked person, however, has no such hope. His evil actions will surely cause him to stumble into judgment.” Steveson, p. 147
v.6
v.6
6 The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed.
Similar statement as v.5
The only need is to be righteous.
Your life will be preserved.
Life of the righteous is protected by righteousness.
v.7
v.7
7 When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of strong men perishes.
“…wicked man...” = the one committing evil.
“…the strong man...” = the one depending upon physical strength.
28 The hope of the righteous is gladness, But the expectation of the wicked perishes. 29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright, But ruin to the workers of iniquity. 30 The righteous will never be shaken, But the wicked will not dwell in the land.
Death completes all things in life, especially for the wicked and those who depend upon their physical strength.
v.8
v.8
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, But the wicked takes his place.
The trouble meant for the righteous will come upon the wicked.
The righteous is sometimes afflicted—of this fact the sage (unlike the author of Job) attempts no discussion; but the affliction, he maintains, is temporary (so Job 20:5)—ultimately the righteous is rescued (so 12:13), and the wicked, cast down from his shortlived triumph, takes his proper place as sufferer. It is the doctrine of recompense in this world.
Therefore, why do what is wicked?!
v.9
v.9
9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.
