Rely on God (June 27th, 2021)
Thank you. We appreciate you. Hey guys, this is special day. I can think of three reasons why it's a special day. When is the special day? Cuz you're here and we're together. I love this. Thank you for being so faithful next week. We'll be moving back inside the building, but these four or five weeks or, however, many we've done outside has been an encouragement to my heart. Thank you for being here, but it's also a special day, because Jim and Anne Arundel are celebrating a wedding anniversary. It's not number one. It's not number 5. The number 10. It's not number 50. It's not number 60. Is number 68, happy anniversary? Pastor Jim and Anna, 68 years.
I found reason and reason you found a good 10 Untold on Roblox. Information that today is Stan Lynn's, 90th birthday, happy birthday Stan. We're glad you're part of us.
For today we finish our sermon series, The unpacking Jude's advice on how to prepare for. False teaching and we talked about remembering the scriptures. And we talked about remaining connected today we're going to talk about relying on God. And in some ways this is the easiest and the most difficult sermon to preach be as easy because of course, I'm going to say we need to rely on God. What do you expect me to say? But it was difficult because It's difficult to say what to say. It's difficult to know what to say about relying on God, we know we should do it. We know it's hard what, practical advice can the scriptures give us as we Endeavor to rely on God?
The answer is we'll see is live Faithfully. Let's say silly things are coming your way, things are coming our way as a church. We need to be faithful and long years weeks, and months and days. And and and Decades of faithfulness teachers that we can in fact rely on God. I'm thinking of Moses. How do I sense that God have a special mission in his life? Nan. Exodus 3 God called him to that special mission. At that point Abraham Moses believe in God, but he didn't rely on God. There's no when the mission came he bought I'm reading from Exodus 3. Then the Lord said I have surely seen the Affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry. Come I will send you the Pharaoh that you may bring my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. There it is. There's the assignment I have selected you. A man who had learned to rely on, God would say, let me at it, I don't know what's going to happen, but I know you'll be there, let me out at, that's not what I said. But Moses said to God, who am I? That I should go to pharaoh and bring the children out of Egypt. Broad answers the objection. He says, quote, but I will be with you. Not enough, not enough. I'm not sure you're going to be good to your word. You say you're going to be with me. But what about when the going gets tough? Can I really count on you?
Moses says to God but they will not believe me or listen to my voice that was after God, had given the assignment and promised to be with him. He was a man who is not learn the secret of how to rely on God in Exodus 3.
And yet in Exodus 14, the situation is much worse, the plague some come and gone. The children of Israel has left that got the Red Sea before them with no apparent way to cross it. And then look over their shoulder and Pharaoh is coming with his soldiers. He's had a change of heart, he's going to take them back, if he's going to kill them, this is a terrible situation and people start freaking out because they had not learned to rely on God. But not Moses. Let me read read you, the biblical text. Will Ferrell Drew nearer when Pharaoh Drew near the people of Israel lifted up their eyes and behold the Egyptians were marching after them and they feared greatly. There's a, there's a clue. These are people who have not learned to rely on God. They feared greatly and the people of Israel prior to the Lord. And then they turn on Moses. And they said to Moses, is it? Because there were no graves in Egypt that you've taken us away to die in the wilderness. What have you done to bring us out of Egypt? Is this not what we said to you and Li jipped leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians, everything's falling out from underneath Moses. An unforeseen problem he did not know. There would be a red sea with no way across to get know that Moses Farrow was changing his mind and his own people are turning on him. But here's somebody here's a man somewhere between Exodus 3 and 14. He has learned to rely on God he says and Moses said to the people fear not
Stand firm. And see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. You don't believe it. I do. I have learned the secret of relying on God, for the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you and you only have to be silent. Prince When we live our lives. Well, it's a journey from Exodus 3 where we know of God, but we don't know his hard enough to rely on it. When the going gets tough, our life can be a journey from Exodus 3 to Exodus 14 where we can say stand firm. Wait and see what the Lord has to do for us.
But how do you do that? How do you move this fateful life so that we can learn to rely on God? Will 1st Timothy has something for us. Just give me three points kids. If you're taking notes, these were the three main Points Hotel in the sub points as we go along. But we're going to learn from 1st, Timothy 4 6, to 10. That when the going gets tough, we need to remain not resign. Remain not resigned. When the going gets tough, there's always a temptation to say I'm out of here. We need to remain not resign. The second thing that Timothy will tell us is that we need to train to remain remaining, doesn't just happen. It's a training program. We need to train to remain and then finally, Timothy's going to warn us that there is pain and remain pain in room. Eight remaining is the right thing to do. It wreaks wonderful fruit in our life and Ministry but there is pain involved. Number one, remain not resign. I'm reading from First 1st Timothy chapter 4 verse 6. Remember, this is a Paul writing to Timothy. Timothy has accepted the Lord. He has been disciple by Paul and now he's a pastor he's responsible for the church and the church is writing words of advice and he says if you put these things before the brothers you will be a good servant of Jesus Christ. There's certain things that you need to put before your church things that will prepare them for what's coming. Know when he says, if you put these things before the brothers, what are these things? What was Paul telling to put before the church while he says? So in the earlier verses 1st Timothy 4 verses 1, he says now the spirit expressly says in later times, some will depart from the face devoting themselves to deceive devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons. you need to put that out there Timothy You need to put these things before the brother tell them that it's the last times and there will be people who depart from sound teaching and devote themselves to deceitful. Spirits, did you know that demons have a Teaching Ministry? Demons are assigned to concoct near truths and destructive errors and introduce them into the church and someone go for it. Kids in your notes, I said, teaching healthier. And not only did they devote themselves to the Teaching Ministry that flows from demons first to? They have the insincerity of liars, whose consciences are seared. Not only teaching Health dear demons. What character makes clear seared conscience. You need to put these things out there. You need to warn your church falls teachers are coming, and they're not getting their truth from the word. They're getting the truth. Actually from demons who are designing near Truth and false truth to divert the church, And they have a certain character based on seared conscience. Friends, does that describe our world? Pursuing teaching from demons. And with seared conscience, completely lost the ability to see right from wrong. Timothy, you need to put these things out there. That's what teachers do teachers since what time they're in and they prepare their people for what's coming and you need to put these things out. Their teachers that are coming from demons that have seared consciences and if you do, you'll be a good servant of Jesus Christ cuz that's what good pastors do. notice by the way, the poll says If you put these things before the brothers, you are a good servant of Jesus Christ. He doesn't mention the response of the brothers. Leaders are not responsible for the response of the people. 1 Timothy has put it before the brothers whether they accept it or not, he has done what he can do. Friends, there's an important secret here. If you're a pastor or a leader or just, if you're a Believer we get our sense of okayness from the Lord. We're not looking for certain responses are not looking for words of Praise as long as we have done with the Lord has told us to do. We are a good servant of Jesus Christ, regardless of how people react, It is Jesus and Jesus alone that will decide who gets to hear. Well done. Good and faithful servant.
Timothy you responsible responsibility is to put these things before the brothers and when you have done that, you have done your responsibility and you are a good servant of Jesus Christ. Remain not resign next train to remain our second Point trained to remain. You are a good servant of Jesus Christ being trained. There is a training program. There is a training program for faithfulness to the Lord day after day, week after week, month after month year after year, after decade. And when we are faithful in life, we moved from Exodus 3.
It's not enough that you promised to be with me to Exodus 14. This is why I have discovered his faithful. He is exactly who he says, he was settle down, crowd, just remain silent, the Lord's going to do this. How do you get from Exodus 3? The Exodus 14, how do you learn the secret of relying on? God you train for it? And there's three elements kids. I changed the structure a little bit. You only have two elements, not the first one. So don't be looking for notes on this point, but there's three elements in this training program wanted to know and obey the word. Noticed being trained in the words of faith and of the good Doctrine. Timothy, you need to know your Bible. This is our first sermon. Remember the scriptures as we are preparing for these teachings from demons. We need to know the truth. Train for it. Praying for it, by studying the words of the faith and good Doctrine. And not only knows them, but obey them notice being trained in the words of the face and a good Doctrine, you know, them, and you have followed, it's not enough to know. We need to be faithful. Phone number one in this training program is to know the word. Phone number to kids in your notes. This is point number one, ignore the tawdry, ignore the tawdry, by the way, do you know what the word tawdry means? When your note tawdry means something that is but a poor quality. Tawdry is something that is showing its impressive. It looks good at first glance but it's built with poor quality some homes. Some cars are all built for the eye and they were impressive until you live in them, so you drive them. Well, first, we need to know the word, the second we need to ignore the tawdry, have nothing to do with irreverent. Silly myths. Do you know that the errors that are sweeping the world right now? We're completely unknown 20 years ago? Any errors that were sweeping. We're sweeping the world 20 years ago, were virtually unknown, 40 years ago. There's always some new craziness. There's always some new teaching from demons, ignore it. Have nothing to do with a reverend silly myths in baseball. You call this a pitch in the dirt. If you're a batter and you got to pitch in the dirt, don't swing because if you swing, in may contact, you in Easy out and if you swing and don't make contact then it's a straight. The winning move for a pitch in the dirt is just to leave it alone when these crazy errors come up, just leave it alone. In baseball, they call it a pitch in the dirt and politics. They call this fighting with a pig. And the political advisors don't fight with a pig. You'll both get dirty and the pig likes it. When the arrows come, just leave it alone. Ignore the tawdry have nothing to do with the Reverend, so he missed. But that doesn't mean we're not active, it needs were doing different things, rather. Ignore the irrelevant Mist, but rather don't react to these errors but I do have something for you to do. What is it? Rather train yourself for godliness. Don't spend your time, swinging a pictures in the dirt. You stay true. Train yourself for godliness. Irreverent silly. Miss are a distraction training for godliness is our destiny. Responding to a reverend silliness is rickety. Training yourself for godliness is reality. Having nothing to do with your reference. Silly Miss is fading. Training yourself for godliness is incident. We need to train ourselves for godliness, by the way. Word, train, the Greek word train, do you know what it is? you'll see the connection as soon as I tell you, if you had a Greek New Testament and you were reading this first, it says rather Geminis gymnast from which we get our word gymnasium. We're on a program. You're exercising here. Don't spend your time responding to a reverend silly Miss, spend your time training for righteousness, living life in a faithful way so that we can discover his Moses discovered that God is as faithful as he said he was, he is exactly who he is and we can rely on him. We're safe from all bodily training is of some value. Godliness, is a value in every way. it is this holds the promise for this present Life Training and godliness is good for this present life but also for the wife to come first nine, this saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. What saying but godliness is a value in every way. There's a short 57, we need to prepare for what's coming and that's your pastor. Let me just as soon as Paul. Let me just give you a short pixie statement that will focus our mind on relevant Rouge training and godliness. Is value in every way. You know, I was thinking about that. I was thinking is there a short pissy statements that I could give our church? That would be helpful in preparing for what's coming? But I kind of got on a roll. I Gate II Road Three, I want to give them to you, each one is three words long as we prepare for an onslaught of false teaching as we prepare for criticism from the society we live in. Let me give you short sayings and you decide whether they're trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. Number one,
Truce over tribe. That's our motto. Truth over tribe, there are powerful forces in our society today, that is trying to get us to divide into tribes and hate each other. Based on Age, based on skin color, based on gender, based on political philosophy. We do have those divisions. But we refuse to hate each other over them because we put roof over tribe. And, as we watched Society, disintegrates into warring factions, we won't follow truth over tribe. A saying trustworthy and deserving of acceptance. Here's another. What I came up with steadfastness not sidetrack. Sidetrack has all these issues explode, in the society around us. These are irrelevant silly missed. They are not our business. Our business is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and that's where our focus is. That's where our energy is. That's what these services are for. True, silvertribe steps us. Not sidetracked. And finally, I came up with this ready. Not ruined. There are tough times ahead for churches in North America. Tough times and have prepared themselves. They will be ready. Others will be ruined. How's the divisions in our society sip in and disturb the love in the body? Twilight you decide whether these are helpful or not but here's three sayings that might help us prepare for what's coming truth over tribe, steadfast not Sidetrack, not ruined.
Move to my third Point, remain. Not resign train, not trained to remain, and finally pain in remain first 10. And for training in righteousness, for training in righteousness for this. And we toil toil means hard work. It means working to the point of exhaustion. Have you ever run or walk or done? Something, where you just? Don't think you could take another step. You just don't think you can swing the hammer one more time. Have you ever been there? That's the effort that we put into our training for righteousness. Toil. Hard work. To the point of exhaustion. It's true that we are working for a Heavenly result but we have Earthly work to do his in your note. So I put this under 18 in remain as outfit as we are training, we are expending energy
But not only toil but we strive. And here, I just want to take a little bit of a detour
Take a little bit of a detour because this word strive has a very interesting double meaning, Strife means Agony. It means pushing yourself, but it also means to be harshly criticized Enmark, 50 and 32 it talks about people mocking Jesus. In fact, even the two criminals one on either side were marking here, one of the criminals was mocking him, the same word as he was being criticized and held it for mockery. It's a same word strive So, not only do we have total output, but we are harshly criticized for it. As matter fact, in Loop 622. We read Jesus teaches us blessed. Are you when people hate you and when they have screwed you and revile, you and spurn, your name as evil. That word revile is the same word here. As we trained for righteousness. People won't like that much. Because we are being everything that they wish they could be and rather than joining us, they will criticize us. Yes, this training has paying for this end, we toil. We work to the point of exhaustion and are things as we take on heavy criticism. But we do it. Why? Because we have our Hope Church on the Living God. And this is the magic that happened as we live baseball Myers and discover as Moses discovered between Exodus 3 and 14, God is who he says he is. He actually is baseball when he says he'll be with you. He means it. I cannot predict what's going to happen, he can't and he will be there when we really know that we learned to remain on God but it takes training.
Friends always send our series there, but let me just summarize, maybe the last seven weeks. I believe that the false teaching epidemic levels in the world. Will eventually make its way into the church. I say that because that's the historical pattern, there's always someone who professes to be a believer that says, he needs to be adopted into the church, or we will become a relevant. That's always the fear is you don't get on board with the new message. You'll be irrelevant. I believe that we will be swamped with false teaching I believe that there is strong opposition coming. But we can prepare and we can count these difficult times as blessings. You know what, one of the major inputs to Moses growth plan was
Barrel.
Pharaoh, you want to read the story? Again, the art of pharaohs story. Does not change from 3 to 14. He's the same Pharaoh in Exodus 3. As he is in, Exodus 14 but God use that stubbornness use that intransigent. Use that wickedness to bring Moses in Exodus 14 is not the same. Moses in Exodus 3 because he had troubles and he had difficulties and people turned on him and each time he live faithfully and learned that God can be relied on. So is this false teaching comes as the opposition arrives? We can use our Pharaoh these difficult times to remember the Scriptures Daily To remain connected to one another. Enter grow in God. So that we learn that he is who he says he is and we learn to rely on him and forever more
Praise our savior's love.
