One of the most important gifts from God we have is - words
It is one of the most unthanked gifts
Some forget to thank God for words. Some think we don't don't need it to live,
and actions will do the talking.
But without words, actions would have no definition. Any action would have no meaning. We would be like animals (without words)
Words make us special. Life would be difficult (without words):
Words give us:
The ability to survive
poison, violent animals. The ability to be education
to be taught, and read The ability to communication
no friends, no laughter, no jobs The ability to be entertained
books, movies, Facebook. The Bible says there are three words you can listen to
God’s Words, Satan’s words, or mans words
God’s Word gives life
We will talk about this soon The words of Satan are destructive
Show video The words of man (your words) are a mirror of the words you listen to the most (God’s or Satan’s)
If you listen more to God, your words will reflect more of God. If you listen more to Satan, your words will reflect more of Satan
Who you listen to the most, will be shown by the words you say.
Who do you listen to the most
God’s Words or Satan’s? Do your friends, family sound more like God, or Satan?
Who do your family, and friends listen to the most? God’s Word
So we learned:
about the destruction from Satan’s Words and how man’s words are a refection of who you listen to (God, Satan) But “what is so great about God’s Word”? (why should I read it?)
well as we just saw, with Satan’s Words being destructive, and ours being reflective. in Psalm 138:2 “…For You have magnified Your word above… Your name.”
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your constant love and truth. You have exalted your name and your promise above everything else.
God puts His Word above His name
The rules for the scribe (made copies of OT) when writing God’s name
wash their hands use a pen designated for writing His name use only the consonants (no vowels) when writing His name. Once began writing His name, even if a King addressed him he couldn't stop. After writing His name he would wash his hands again
His name was very respected. And by His name we are saved from hell.
Acts 4:12 “…for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” But God said He puts His Word above His Name. God’s Word gives life
12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
As you read through His Word (in a way that gives relationship) you will experience what a relationship with God is like
Eph. 3:12 “12 in whom (JESUS) we have… access with confidence through faith in Him.”
12 In him we have boldness and confident access through faith in him.
It takes faith to have a relationship with God through His Word.
Ro.10:17 “17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” You may feel silly trying to have a relationship with God at first but..
17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.
just go for it. His Word gives meaning
His Word has an ability to direct your life (what other book can do that)
King David said “105Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”
Back then, to get around, you had to shine a light to see where your going.
David is saying His Word guides His life.
If you are not being guided by His Word, whose words are you being guided by? His Word is alive
It guides our life It convicts It encourages It was made into flesh
In John 1:14 “14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
That is speaking of Jesus
Jesus is the Word of God.
How you would treat Jesus is how you treat the Word of God.
Knowing that would you now throw your Bible? Will you get frustrated with it, and quit reading. Make sure you treat His Word like it is alive. His Word is eternal
John 1:1 says, that the Word of God was there before the beginning of time Isaiah 40:8 says, “8The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” Jesus said in Mark 13:31 “31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
There is no start or end to His Word
So if you live by His Word how long will you live?
1 Peter 1:23-25 “23 For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 24 As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. 25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.”* Other things His Word does:
23 because you have been born again—not of perishable seed but of imperishable—through the living and enduring word of God.
24 For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this word is the gospel that was proclaimed to you.
It is able to teach, correct, change, and instruct you. 2 Timothy 3:16 By it we are sanctified - Eph. 5:26 & James 1:21 By His word we wont stumble Psalm 17:4–5 You excel in strength if you heed it -Psalm 103:20- A young man’s way is cleansed by respecting the Word of God. - Psalm 119:9 It is able to judge the thought and intents of your heart by piercing your heart and soul. Hebrew 4:12 God’s word is a test for others. Psalm 105:19 His Word in our hearts keeps us from sin Psalm 119:11 Faith comes by hearing it. - Romans 10:17 It gives us hope - Romans 15:4 Conclusion
God’s Word is alive and eternal, and it gives us life, and meaning, and so much more. Yet we disregard it so often.
How stupid, if only we really understand what we are missing
If only everyone understood what they are missing We chose the words from Satan more then we chose the Words from God
We are more interested in a gossip then a story that took God 1,600 years to write. We are more interested in a person’s Vlog or blog has to say then the 40 different authors God used to speak to you. We are more interested in people who are not so interested in us then God who was so interested in us He created a book using three different languages, on three different continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe) We often walk passed our Bibles daily, and forget them when going to church. Yet God didn't forget His Word and protected it so we can have it today. There is a book meant to blow our minds, guide our lives, and touch our hearts. And God made sure that we would still have it through 3,600 years of history, while people wanted to destroy it. Yet our response to God about it is meh.
who would do that to such a caring and loving God?
How dare anyone disrespect God by disrespecting His Word
We often condemn the Jews for being cruel to Jesus But we are not any better by being cruel to His Word. His Word gives us everything we need as humans, it guides us, it gives us hope, it corrects, it perfects us, it strengthens us, it purifies us.
This is why Jesus said in Matt 4:4 ““Man shall live…by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
4 He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Will H. Houghton (ex-president of Moody Bible Institute) said
“Lay hold of the Bible until the Bible lays hold of you.”
A great thing about the Bible is that you don't need to be a scholar to understand it.
In fact
The Greek word for scholar is “scholeo” which its definition has to do with being leisurely (unhurried, relaxed)
We need to be taking time to be leisurely in the Word of God and to let God really speak. God wants us to enjoy Him
or as Warrior King David put it “Oh, how I love your instructions! I think about them all day long.” -Psalm 119:97 Our problem is that we get to systematic with our relationship with God
97 How I love your instruction! It is my meditation all day long.
A relationship is enjoyed, treat your Bible as something to be enjoyed. We need to love His Word
What you invest in is what you love.
If you invest your time in a team, you will gain a fondness of that team If you invest your time in movies
you will gain a fondness of actors, and actresses What if you invested time in the Word of God.
I bet the result would be that you would love His Word.
Great quote:
Know it in your mind. Store it in your heart. Show it in your life. Sow it in the world.
You will never regret investing in His Word. God’s investment in you,
God put good work in giving you hope, to guide your life, to bless you.
God spent 1,600 years to complete it He used 40 authors, 3 languages, and three continents. There is 770,430 words in NKJV
God put a lot of work into it,
The fact that He did that so that you can have hope, and guidance, shows you that He cares for you. Do you appreciate this? Then apply His Word to your life.
Shame on us when we say
“I have a busy day today, ill read later” “I am to tired to read it now, so ill read it when I am more awake” “I already know what it says, so I am okay” “Ill just read double tomorrow”
What if God did the same thing to you?
When you want Him to speak to you, He says
“ I am tired, ill listen to you later.” “I am having a busy day, lets do this later” “Ill listen to you longer tomorrow” God could say this to you, and still be God.
but if do the same to God, we ruin ourselves.
this is why James said in James 1:22 “be doers of the word, lest you deceive yourself” God isn't our Lord that we tell Him to wait till tomorrow
22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
We are the ones that need Him. His Word, gives us direction, hope, wisdom, communication with God, it transforms us.
but we don't put much effort in it.
It does so much good for us, and we neglect it in our lives.
Did God work so hard on it for nothing?
Jesus died to fulfill the prophecies in Word of God If we cant live according to His Word now how do we expect we will die for it, if so the time comes. Really do we
think we are stronger then persecuted church, who is revived and guided by His Word think we are smarter then the great theologians and pastors who have gone before us? think we know more than God, that we ignore the fact that He say’s we need it.
Jesus said in Matt 4:4 that “Man shall live…by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
4 He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Are we stronger Christians than the persecuted church Are we smarter then the great men who have gone before us?
only a fool rejects the wisdom and hope found in His Word. Story
In the years of the martyrs Christians fled into the underground caverns outside Rome in almost 600 miles of mole like tunnels.
Ten generations of Christians were buried in the catacombs (under ground cemetery) during approximately 300 years of persecution.
No one knows the exact number, but archaeologists estimate between 1,750,000 and 4,000,000 Christians were placed in a grave in these dark tunnels.
Inscriptions of Scripture can still be seen on the catacomb walls. One of the most frequent inscriptions is the sign of the fish. But the inscription which best describes their faith says: “The Word of God is not bound.”
How do you want to be known?
That the Word of God was not bound in your life or that you rejected it. As we talked about before
there are three words in this life: God’s words, Satan’s and man’s
Satan’s will destroy you God’s will give you life Man’s words will reflect from what it listens to the most
Examine your previous week, how was your relationship with God? Was it amazing? or Did you disrespect God and His Word? who’s words did you listen to the most?
Lets pray.
Who wants to live by God’s Word raise hand. How to have a relationship with God with His Word.
Read it desiring a relationship with God.
Romans 10:17 “17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Then the faith will come that will cause the relationship to begin.
17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.
Eph. 3:12 “12 in whom (JESUS) we have… access with confidence through faith in Him.” the faith will encourage you to speak to Him, and it will help you to hear
12 In him we have boldness and confident access through faith in him.
