As you all know we have been studying through the theme “Names of Jesus” with the hope of learning more about our Lord & Savior Jesus the Christ. The idea being if we learn more we will draw closer to him as we should each day. In our last study we examined the first half of our passage from John 10:1-10 wherein Jesus entitles himself as “The Door.” Today we are going to pick up where we left off with John 10:11-18. Twice in this passage Jesus describes himself as the “Good Shepherd” verses 11 and 14. Now when you read this entire passage there are several key points to remember about why Jesus is the “Good Shepherd.” Let’s read John 10:11 and John 10:14-16.
John 10:11 ESV
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10:14–16 ESV
14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
From these passages we can see clearly why Jesus is the Good Shepherd. First, because he was willing to lay down his life for all not just one of us, or two of us or three of us, but every soul that ever lived that reached the age of accountability i.e., the age one can sin. Even knowing us as he does, ones who sin (Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8, 10) he still died for us.
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Secondly, he is the Good Shepherd because he didn’t leave us Gentiles to fend for ourselves but rather brought our the Gentile fold and the Hebrew fold together making one fold.
Galatians 3:28 ESV
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
These two reason make Jesus the Chief Shepherd because through his love and sacrifice he can now offer all his creation the “unfading crown of glory” (1 Peter 5:4).
