Psalm 121:5–6 ESV
5 The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

He Keeps!

In as much as He keeps Israel...
Psalm 121:4 ESV
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
“The Lord is your Keeper”
Just as John 10:3-16 refers to the Lord and the gatekeeper who opens the gate for the Shepherd and the sheep hear His voice and follow.
The gatekeeper is there when:
the wolf
the bear
the lion
the enemy arises
He Keeps!
John 10:28–29 ESV
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
Romans 8:35–39 ESV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

He Shades/Shields!

Psalm 121:5 ESV
5 The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
In the OT the idea of Shade was a picture of protection, much like we think of shade a protection and comfort.
Numbers 6:24–26 ESV
24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
You see the idea of the shade is the idea of the blessed protection of God.
You see the position of the Lord is mentioned as the “right hand” — the place of honor.

He Protects & Refreshes

Psalm 121:6 ESV
6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
We have from the previous verse the concept of shading or shielding.
Shielding from what?
Light of the Day & Night
In the Ancient Near East the common pagan gods were thought to rest in the evening.
They descended to the underworld at night.
But the LORD is always present.
He protects, but He refreshes.
What Good is shade?
In a day before AC, in the middle of the day, shade would keep one from the elements.
