13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

A. Jesus Calls Levi. (v.14)

1. “Follow me”- Come be my Disciple!
2. Why Levi?
3. He’s a Cheat, extortionist, traitor, unclean tax-collector, a sinner…He’s an Outcast!
4. Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah, the Anointed One! Shouldn’t He be seeking to chose the righteous and the upright to serve in the Kingdom? …Why pick Levi?

II. The Unaccepted Fellowship. (v. 15-17)

Mark 2:15–17 ESV
15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

A. Levi Host a feast for Jesus.

B. The Guest list included:

Jesus, His Disciples, and the Outcasts
(Tax-collectors and sinners)

C. The Disdain of the Religious leaders. (v.16)

D. The Response of Jesus. (v.17)

Jesus’ Point. Those who proclaim themselves “well”(the self-righteous), will never receive the help offered by the physician.
Luke 18:9–14 ESV
9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
