1. Live in light of eternity Philippians 4:4–5
Philippians 4:4–5 NKJV
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
a. Heaven is our home. Philippians 3:20
Philippians 3:20 NKJV
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
b. The righteous rejoice! Psalm 64:10; Psalm 97:12
Psalm 64:10 NKJV
The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory.
Psalm 97:12 NKJV
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.
c. God is present in my situation and coming soon!
i. God is near. 1 Peter 2:21–25; Psalm 145:18
1 Peter 2:21–25 NKJV
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Psalm 145:18 NKJV
The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.
ii. The Day of the Lord is coming. Zephaniah 1:7; James 5:8
Zephaniah 1:7 NKJV
Be silent in the presence of the Lord God; For the day of the Lord is at hand, For the Lord has prepared a sacrifice; He has invited His guests.
James 5:8 NKJV
You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
2. Trust God. Philippians 4:6–7
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
a. Not through anxiety. Proverbs 12:25
Proverbs 12:25 NKJV
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.
b. Through prayer. 1 Peter 5:6–7
1 Peter 5:6–7 NKJV
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
c. With thanksgiving. Romans 1:21
Romans 1:21 NKJV
because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Is it wrong to be anxious or depressed?
Paul was troubled. 2 Corinthians 1:8–11
2 Corinthians 1:8–11 NKJV
For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us, you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.
Cain was troubled. Genesis 4:6-7
Genesis 4:6 NKJV
So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
The Sons of Korah were troubled. Psalm 43:5
Psalm 43:5 NKJV
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
3. Train your mind!
a. Let go of unprofitable thoughts. Psalm 94:8–15; Romans 12:2
Psalm 94:8–15 NKJV
Understand, you senseless among the people; And you fools, when will you be wise? He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see? He who instructs the nations, shall He not correct, He who teaches man knowledge? The Lord knows the thoughts of man, That they are futile. Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord, And teach out of Your law, That You may give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked. For the Lord will not cast off His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance. But judgment will return to righteousness, And all the upright in heart will follow it.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
b. Meditate on things that have real value. Psalm 1:1–2; Isaiah 26:3
Psalm 1:1–2 NKJV
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
