10 But these people blaspheme anything they do not understand. And what they do understand by instinct—like irrational animals—by these things they are destroyed.

Life Application New Testament Commentary The Danger of False Teachers / 1:3–16

1:10 In contrast to Michael’s refusal to slander even Satan himself (1:9), the false teachers scoffed at celestial power (1:8) and mocked and cursed the things they do not understand. Many of these false teachers claimed to possess a superior, secret knowledge that gave them authority. They considered themselves to be the only ones to truly “understand” God. Yet by their slander, they revealed not superior knowledge, but profound ignorance. In fact, for all their pride, they were no better than animals. They could really do no more than whatever their instincts tell them—that is, how to fulfill their sexual desires. While claiming superior knowledge and status, these false teachers had only the most basic knowledge—how to fulfill their lust. They had no understanding beyond that of the animals; their status was not above the rest of humanity, but was, in reality, below it.

10 (vv. 8–10) Teachers, False—Spiritual World: false teachers scoff at the idea of angels and of spiritual beings, in particular of Satan and other fallen angels. This is definitely the meaning of this trait: the illustration shows this (vv. 9–10). False teachers speak against, doubt, and question spiritual beings such as angels and the cherubim and seraphim. They ridicule the ideas of Christ and angels and other spiritual beings living in a spiritual world. They question whether there are beings in a spiritual world who are living and functioning just as we are in this world.
⇒ The idea of another dimension of being, of a spiritual world that is as real and alive as the physical world is questioned.
⇒ The idea of levels of authority, of principalities and powers and rulers in a spiritual world is mocked.
⇒ The idea of Christ being exalted to the right hand of God and of believers someday ruling and serving and ministering for Christ in a new heavens and earth is doubted and often ridiculed.
But note two things.
a. False teachers do that which even the highest angel would not dare do. Even Michael himself, one of the highest if not the highest angel in heaven, would not rebuke the devil. This is a strong warning to the false teachers. The angels themselves do not dare rail and mock the principalities and powers of the spiritual world.

Do not let the lack of understanding destroy you.
Our pride will cause us not to ask or seek out the tough questions.
Lack of understanding does not equate to lack of truth.

And what they do understand by instinct

-meaning its easy for them to understand.
and we know that the gospel is spiritually digested
1 Corinthians 1:18–25 (CSB)
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved. For it is written,
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and I will set aside the intelligence of the intelligent.
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish? For since, in God’s wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached. For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, because God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
1 Corinthians 2:14–16 CSB
But the person without the Spirit does not receive what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually. The spiritual person, however, can evaluate everything, and yet he himself cannot be evaluated by anyone. For who has known the Lord’s mind, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Acts 17:10–15 CSB
As soon as it was night, the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. Upon arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. The people here were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, since they received the word with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Consequently, many of them believed, including a number of the prominent Greek women as well as men. But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came there too, agitating and upsetting the crowds. Then the brothers and sisters immediately sent Paul away to go to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed on there. Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving instructions for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.
Received with eagerness and examined it
How many of you examine what I say on Sundays
or examine what I say in bible study
or examine what your favorite youtube pastor says
or examine what your friend in the ministry says
Stop taking people’s word and opinions and get into the word of God for yourself.
If you dont get it ask.... thats why we have teachers in the church
Its okay to challenge people on the Word. To have discussions on it. The Word is life!
The worse thing is to not understand and leave it with no knowledge because then you are open to anything
