The Day of Pentecost – The outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Teach it or Preach it? Birth of the church or the receiving of the Holy Spirit by every believer?)
Is the Message What Happened on the Day of Pentecost?
How does that impact the modern-day Christian?
This the birth of the Baptist church, though we didn’t call ourselves Baptist. The church didn’t have a name any more than the followers of Christ had one. If fact the name was derived from the word Anabaptist, or re-baptizers. Which is what we were called by those that had left the true doctrines of God. It was slur just as being called a Christian was intended to be in Antioch. (Acts 11:26).
Acts 2:1-47
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
· Pentecost, a Jewish feast, now wrongly considered a Christian Denomination. We do that so we can be separated from like minded brethren” and thus discriminate against each other. Nothing like the “one accord” mentioned here.
· Pentecost is merely a reference to Time. 50 days prior it was the Feast of Passover
o The Feast of the First Fruits – Exodus 34:22
o Pentecost means 50 days – 50th day after 7 sabbaths
· Considered the birthday of the Christian Church
· Who are the “all”? – Acts 1:13-14
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
· A clear reference to the Holy Spirit – “a rushing mighty wind”.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
· There was/is no fire baptism
o Luke did the best he could in describing what was described to him.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
· God created the 70 nation and the languages they spoke in. It is and always has been HIS intentions to reconcile the nations back unto Himself. The “other tongues” spoken here are a portion of the tongues of those 70 nations as indicated in the scriptures; verses 2:8-11.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
· “Devout men” meaning men that were devoted to God and the study of Torah, after all, it was the time of a Feast. The city was crowded.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
· This wasn’t the same small wind David heard in the tops of the mulberry trees, NO, this was a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and the people throughout the city heard it.
· Perhaps if we would “make a joyful noise” the multitude would come to the Lord.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
· When was the last time you marveled, or we amazed at something God was doing?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
Peter’s Sermon: V.14-47
· The words of Joel
· The Murder of the Messiah
· The words of David
· The words of Peter
· What must we do?
I don’t know of any believe that doesn’t want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Bible says you shall receive the gift, (V.38). What’s missing?
“God will not surprise a doubting heart with an effusion of the Holy Spirit, nor will He fill anyone who has doctrinal questions about the possibility of being filled.” (A. W. Tozer, God’s Pursuit of Man, chpt 10)
Before we can ever receive the Holy Spirit, we must first:
· Believe God is
· Believe He is a spirit
· Believe in a spirit world
· Believe in spiritual warfare
· Believe that God wants a relationship with you. He wants to pour out His Spirit on you.
Then we must believe that Jesus is the Son of God. The Jewish people had the aforementioned, but they rejected Jesus as the Messiah. “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Acts 2:36.
Does the Church understand that we too had a hand in HIS crucifixion? We’d better.
Even now, every believer is called to crucify his old self and take up his cross daily in following Christ.
Most won’t even take up their Bible and read it let alone take up a cross.
God made Jesus both, Lord and Christ, (Acts 2:36)what will you make of Him?
· Saviour but not Lord?
· Lord but not Saviour?
· A friend in your time of need?
· How about God, will you make Him God?
A.W. Tozer said, “We have as much of God as we actually want.”
I’ll ask, how much of God do you actually have?
· Do you have enough to weather the trial and temptations of life?
· Do you have enough to weather the little storms of life?
· How about the heavy storms?
Or do you even need Him at all?
“I Need Thee, Lord I Need Thee…”
