Context and Frame Sermon

New Sermon Series - We are in the Servant songs, Isaiah was written 700 years prior to the birth of Christ.
In the next 4 weeks we are going to go through the 4 servant songs of Isaiah, do a little bit of a study so we can understand them more and then try and figure out how they relate to us.
This week we will go through 42:1-9 - The Servant of Justice
Next week will be the Servant of Choosing
The servant of Obedience and then the servant of Suffering.
It is a series on God’s Saving Grace - his etermal purpose of redemption and he works that eternal purpose in Histry. As we walk through this series, My hope is that we gain a deeper understanding of who Jesus was, and what that means for our lives.
Beautiful Parallel between how these progress and Jesus Ministry | Going to see how Jesus began his public ministry by meeting hte needs of hurting people, preaching the good news about kingdom | As time passed, he was rejected and concentrated on teaching his disciples. After Peters confession of him as Christ he concentrated on his rejection, death and resurection, and the life of Christ comes toa grand fulfilment of hebrew prophesy being our sacrafice on teh cross.
We to, through these songs are going to make this climb to this climax. So what’s going to happen?
Each week, I’m going to read the scripture, so we get an overall, then we are going to go verse by verse and just give a mini explanation, then we are going to dive into some real life application. Do you want to come on this journey with me over the next four weeks?
Let’s start our climb:

Scripture

Isaiah 42:1–9 ESV
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”
Let’s break it down
Isaiah 42:1 ESV
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
Servent in NKJC and NASB Capitilised | Lord speaks of SERVANT | Servant = Messiah, it doesn’t always apply to Messiah through Isaiah - Later in Isaiah it’s King Cyras (not born for 150 years), other places in this chapter he means “Israel as a whole” | How do we know? Same in Hebrew, but we know because of the Context
Uphold = Hebrew, Grip Fast, hold Fast. NKJV means “Elect” - capatilises. “In whom my soul delights” | Reading God the Father, speaking of God the Son. | In delights him. In Matthew twice, God says “I am well Pleased with my Son” | Special Love relationship between Father & Son |
John 17:24 ESV
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
John 14:31 ESV
but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
When he sent his son, he had such deep love.
Spirit upon him = When Spirit on or upon the BIBLE is talking enabling, empowering. Speaks of the empowering of the son, through teh spirit to bring Justice.
Verse 2 then speaks of his ministry
Isaiah 42:2 ESV
He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street;
refers to 1st coming | Does not mean “will not cry out” | Speaks of the meek nature of Messiah | Jesus didn’t come in a bang | Angels appeared to shepards in a field when born | he will come with gentleness | not with sword, we know the second time though.
Isaiah 42:3 ESV
a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.
We are going to come back to this verse - but - 2nd time ‘justice’ is mentioned. I believe this has dual meaning- he will have JUSTICE in the 2nd coming when he rules. 2nd time is when he satisfies God’s justice.
**Court Room** - Just and Merciful - God is Just - and Merciful- He is the only one. Justice, deserves payment. “The Wages of Sin, is Death...” - Someone had to DIE.
Isaiah 42:4 ESV
He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.
coastlands = Gentles. The Nations that are longing for the Law of the 2nd coming.
“What is the context, that tells me you are talking about Jesus?” contextual understanding, but beyong that, Matthew quoted this
Matthew 12:15–21 ESV
Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”
so Matthew quotes this, applies to Jesus and says he “FULFILLS”
Isaiah 42:5 ESV
Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:
“Lord” = Yahwey. Described himself then says, this is what he is speaking…and to who? to Jesus
Isaiah 42:6 ESV
“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations,
Isaiah 42:7 ESV
to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.
Father, speaking of the son. Not physical incarceration, but Sin.
Luke 2:25–32 ESV
Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Isaiah 42:8–9 ESV
I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”
Go back to
Isaiah 42:3 ESV
a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.
visualise this, what this means | He cares for the broken | Where Reed comes from | What he does to your flame | He fans it

Story of Elijah

3 Stories in Scripture - Go to Elijah.
Elijah was a Prophet | If you read any of his story you would think unshakeable faith | He was involved in predicting a drought that would last 3 years | fed by Ravens | Experienced limitless jug of oil to be poured (though outside) | Witnessed a resurrection | Beat the prophets of baal by calling fire down from heavens |
After defeated Baal it angered king Ahab and his wife Jezabel and she said this:
1 Kings 19:2–3 ESV
Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
Elijah then ran for an entire day | Found a tree | and said I am DONE, Take my life |
What happened - *Reed* *Broken*
1 Kings 19:5 ESV
And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.”
Lord fed him | angel said again:
1 Kings 19:7–8 ESV
And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.
There was God’s favour, in his Failure. We get caught up in our storms, without realising God might be preparing.
Why Didn’t God come when Elijah when he was first afriad | During Threat
God wanted to make sure that there was no way Elijah could ever say it was him.
What Elijah did? Seeked God | spent time
It was impossible for Elijah, but only possible for God through Elijah.
Next part: Cave, God Spoke, he got back onto the mission. How did he die?
Elijah, Bruised Reed, God Came.
First step if you are broken, turn to God, let him heal you.

2nd Story - Story of Saul of Tarsus

Saul of Tarsus | A pharisee, Son of a Pharisee | Trained under Gamaliel - One of the greatest teachers | He approved the stoning of Stephen | Arrested many christians and reported directly to the high priest.
On a mission to damascus this happened
Acts 9:3–6 ESV
Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.”
Acts 9:18–19 ESV
And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; and taking food, he was strengthened. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus.
Interesting what Paul did here: Seeked God, got on with the mission, and he tells us in Galatians he spent 3 years in Arabia.
Paul crucified Christians was chosen by God, set a part, a broken reed, to preach the Gospel.
Elijah a prophet who was running from his calling
Paul, a pharisee who was going to persecute Christians
Both men undeserserving
Both men not earning it
Both men getting it
Both men broken
God met both men where they were.
God meets us where we are
Get up, don’t give up. there is favor in your failure and God is looking to do something in you before he does something for you.
This is what God’s Mercy looks like
*Jacob if we have time*

Conclusion

This is what God’s Mercy looks like | meets you...
Came here to tell someone to GET UP, DON’T GIVE UP - but…you can’t only God can.
What does his Justice look like? God…Hates…Sin. In his Justice he judged us because we are guilty: in his Mercy he climbed down, and took our punishement, but make no mistake: he is coming back
Very different | With a sword | every knee will bow | Every tongue confess
He is reaching out his hand to every broken reed | Smouldering wick.
