Exodus 29: Consecration of the Priest – PM Teaching
To consecrate is to set apart unto God. The Book of Leviticus gives much greater detail but here we will discuss it as it appears in the Exodus 29.
1 And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest's office:
Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish, 2And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them. 3 Types of bread, each anointed with oil. It is believed the Moses anointed the wheaten flour with oil before the flour was backed.
Three steps are involved in the preparation of Aaron and his sons.
1. The washing – full body bath – V.4 Considered by the Jews to be a total immersion.
2. The vesting or clothing of – A complete covering of the body – V. 5-6
3. The anointing – anointing them with oil – V.7
The priesthood is to Aaron and his sons forever. 8 “And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them. 9 And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest's office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron and his sons.”
The Offerings: (7/8 offerings by my count) preparation for going before God and atoning for Israel’s sins. We will need 1 Bull and 2 Rams, some bread, and wine to drink.
· Sin offering – the Bull – V.10-14
o Blood to go on the horns of the altar
· Burnt offering – 1st Ram – V.15-18
o Blood to go around altar
· Consecration offering – 2ndRam – V.19-21
o Blood to go on the ear, thumb, and toe of Aaron and sons
o Blood and oil are also applied to the priestly garments
· Wave offeringV.22-25
· Heave offeringV.26-28
· Peace offeringV.28
The Consecration Event(for the Priest and the altar, see V.37) takes 7 days, the number of completion. – V.35
BUT, all of that was just for the Consecration of the Priest
· The Continual Burnt offering – 2 lambs a day, continually V.38-42
· Drink offering – This was poured out unto God. Not an excuse for consuming wine.
V.45, God dwelt among Israel.
So, at the beginning of the message I stated that Aaron and his sons were:
1. Washed in water – full body bath – V.4 Considered by the Jews to be a total immersion.
2. Vesting with Priestly garments – A complete covering of the body – V. 5-6
3. Anointed with oil – anointing them with oil – V.7
But because of the sacrifice made by Christ once for all, we are:
1. Washed in Blood 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
2. Vested in the Righteousness of Christ - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21.
3. Anointed with the Holy Ghost 2 Corinthians 1:21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
a. John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
We leave here tonight praising God for Sacrificial Lamb of God that died to pay a sin debt we could never afford to pay. Think of how many sheep were spared because HE died once for all. Then consider that we were the sheep before the slaughter.
Romans 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. OH! but the Good Shepherd came and gave His life for the sheep! And we could go on an on from there…
