We need to avoid the destruction of evil by not despising God’s Word and not despising God’s grace.

1. Evil’s destruction

Not in Bathsheba
Not in his activity
Avoiding certain environments, Having purpose, Friends who will hold you accountable
Story through 12
Lack of a hidden life with God.
Genesis 3 comparisons
David wanted to define what activities were good for him and control the consequences of what he did. He didn’t want to live under God’s rule and God’s ways. God however is no respecter of persons. 2 Samuel arc
Look at Proverbs
How could David do this if he’s a man after God’s own heart?

2. Don’t despise God’s Word

Ten Commandments
Do you delight in having someone guiding you?
Psalm 119:9–11 ESV
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! 11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 51:4 ESV
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
Psalm 51:13 ESV
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
Lack of integrity
Parable of the Sower

3. Don’t despise God’s grace

God is the giver of every good and perfect gift.
David turned into a taker.
Psalm 51:12 ESV
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:15–17 ESV
15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
We need both God’s Word and God’s grace (benevolent rule). Otherwise Yahweh is a god who doesn’t know what’s best for us. Or he’s a god who doesn’t care about our needs just our performance.
Cat and the Moon
We live in a world that despises God’s Word and His grace.
Have you done this?

We need a King who won’t despise God’s Word or God’s grace.

Matthew 6:19–20 (ESV)
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Matthew 6:25 ESV
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Matthew 6:31–33 ESV
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
We need Him to rescue us. He will if we call on Him.
Aragorn in the Return of the King
1 Peter 1:17–20 ESV
17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
Which king is your King? Are you following your King by obeying God’s Word and delighting in His grace?
