Now a days you can type in a couple worlds in a search bar and have an app create a playlist for you in instant. But it wasn't always like that..back in my day (i can say that now that I’m 29) making a play list took work…it took intentionality...
Grew up in Christian household and I wasn't aloud to listen to any secular music. I grew up Fred Hammond, Hezekiah Walker, John P. Kee, Anyone With The Last name “Winans”.. the list gones on. But when I got to middle school I did a thing…This artist named Chris Brown came out and stumbled upon his music video “Run It”. The first little pience of money I bought a Discman, some headphones Chris Brown CD…from there it was history
Started using my mom’s desktop computer to burn blank cd’s with different playlists on them… we didn’t have Apple Music or Spotify.. but we did have LimeWire for a hot minute! IF you know you know. My mom had so many viruses on her computer but I had all the best stolen music I could dream of
I would make these playlists for all types of things
I had a workout playlist
I had a dance playlist
I had a playlist for that girl i had a crush on when I want to send a certain type of message
Every CD was custom made with songs and sounds that fit the moment or the mood I want to create
Each one set the tone for something specific
We have to have the same intentionality as it pertains to our life!
Today let’s talk about Setting The Tone With Serving Others
Luke 10:25–37 (NASB95)
And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?”
And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”
But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.
“And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
“Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
“But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
“On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’
“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?”
And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”

Questions to ask yourself when faced with opportunity to serve
Coincidence or Calling?
Coincidence or Calling?
Luke 10:31
“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.
Coincidence is mentioned very few times in scripture. See it when Ruth so happens to be end up working in the plot of land that belongs to Boaz. Something ordained by God. Boaz ends up becoming her husband in the end. ..Stalking joke
like the priest and the Levite , We can tend to overlook people and situations when we don’t look at them with the proper lense
How you SEE the need will determine how you SERVE the need!
Interruption or Invitation
Interruption or Invitation
Once Jesus was teaching and four men tore the roof off and dropped a paralyzed man in the middle of the church service
God has no problem with interrupting your plans if it brings you to your purpose. Your purpose is always connected to people
The most spiritual thing we could do is stop..
Story about neighbor attacked by dog … I ran toward the danger like a white girl in a scary movie ..
How do I know that I’m called to serve?
How do I know that I’m called to serve?
Luke 16:19–21 (NASB95)
“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.
“And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.
(1) Awareness - saw Lazarus every day
(2) Access - Lazarus was laid at his gate
(3) Ability - the man was blessed with material wealth
The only reason for his judgement given was not some evil he did, but good he refused to do.
Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
It’s not “BY CHANCE.”
It’s not “BY COINCIDENCE.”
It’s BY CALLING!
Elevate Life Church know’s what we’re called to… And we do it well! Until Jacksonville Knows Jesus!
How are you responding to the needs that God has placed in front of you?
Are you taking responsibility for your neighbor? Are you responding to the call?
Calculation or Compassion?
Calculation or Compassion?
Two Ways To Process
The Levite temple assistant and the priest processed through their ...
HEAD - What will happen TO ME if I stop and help? ME>THEM
HEART- What will happen TO THEM if I don’t? THEM>ME
Luke 10:33 (NASB95)
“But a despised Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
Greek thought of compassion is that it originated from the bowels…Jokes about bowels
Had the Samaritan processed with his HEAD this would be a totally different situation…But because he lead with his HEART, this dispised Samartan was able to put aside their differences in order to serve this man in his brokenness
Compassion empowers us to not let how we are SEEN by others determine how we SEE others!
The Jewish man whom he helped, almost certainly would not have stopped to help him if the situation were reversed.
Hate can be contagious
RACISM is passed down generations
ABUSE is passed down generations
UNFORGIVENESS passed down generations
BECAUSE hate is contagious but SO IS LOVE
We love, because He first loved us.
Story about Steph talking to Haitian kids in DR (Love is contagious)
Benito Story* — if it wasn’t for you I would have ended my life -SHARING THE LOVE OF JESUS TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WERE IN THE SAME POSITION
HATE breeds death - LOVE breeds Life .. Revival
Kanye tweeted..
“If you wanna see the true character of a person, watch the way they treat someone who can’t do anything for them.”
How do you treat the people in your life who have nothing to offer you? What contagion are you passing to others?
bible says
Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For from it flow the springs of life.
..out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks
You wonder why you’re always screaming at your kids
You wonder why it’s so hard for you to trust people
You wonder why you can’t stop gossiping
It starts with the condition of your heart...
It’s hard to have a heart of compassion when you’re filled with BITTERNESS
It’s hard to have a heart of compassion when you're puffed up with PRIDE
It’s hard to have a heart of compassion when you are harboring UNFORGIVENESS
At some point we have to stop calculating with our heads and start processes with out hearts!
At some point we’ve gotta be filled with compassion for others instead of trying to preserve our own life
We have to get our hearts right
How’s your heart?Who do you need to to forgive? Who do you need to show humility to? Who do you need to stop gossiping about?!
The Samaritan felt compassion. Not only was His HEART moved but so did his HANDS.
Emotion or Action?
Emotion or Action?
The Preist comes along and sees the man but passes him by.
The Levite comes along. Sees the man .. and it seems like he investigates a little further. Maybe he waits to see if the half dead man takes a breath. I’d like to think that he felt something..pity, sadness .. for the broken man. He passes him by..because emotions are good but they will only take you so far...
I hear so many Christians (including me) talking about feelings all the time. .. (Worship was so good..I got the goosies! I Don’t read my bible as much because I don’t get the same feeling I used to! Even in our prayer life…I’m just waiting for peace)
Moses didn't feel Peace when God told him to go tell the most Powerful man in the world “let my people go”!
Jonah didn't feel fussies inside when God told him to go Nineveh?!
Do you think Paul felt Peace when God caused him to go blind and told him to stop killing Christians?!
Why do we let feelings dictate our obedience to God?
Luke 10:34 (NASB95)
and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
Here comes the Samaritan who sees then man..his heart is moved and his emotions rise..but he does stop there. He didn’t look at the man on the ground, beaten and broken and bloody and count this encounter as an interuption or happen stance. We don’t know where the Samaritan was headed or how long his journey was. He goes and gets down on Jewish man’s level gives of all that he had to show a true act of love to him...
Jesus finishes the story with a question - which of the three men, the Priest, the temple assistant, or the Samaritan, was a neighbor?
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
And Jesus concludes with a call to ACTION - go and do!
The whole parable started because the religious lawyer wanted to know how to experience eternal life.
Jesus asks what the scriptures say. The man responds, love God with all your heart, love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus replies:
28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”
"Do this and you will live," not “believe this and you will live.” Not “feel this and you will live. Not “Have this opinion and you will live”???
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Show mercy to the broken !
Have compassion!
Give generously!
Serve others above yourself!
*Gracie Story about homeless man in the subway*
Love is an ACTION, not a FEELING.
In this God DEMONSTRATES His love toward us - that Christ died for us.
God so loved the world that HE gave
Living this way doesn’t just save the one I help, it saves me.
You wanna find community .. serve
You wanna find your purpose .. serve
You wanna stop feeling empty inside .. serve
You wanna find a man .. serve
If you want to LOOK more like Jesus you've got LOVE more like Jesus. His love serves. His love gives
called to serve the poor, the orphan and the widow. to do justice and righteousness...
SERVE DAY. SERVE TEAM .. you can do it in your every day life
When I love others, yes, THEY live, but also, I LIVE.
"If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.” - Luke 17:33
Prayer:
Jesus, we thank you because you were the one who had compassion on us, came to us, bandaged us, healed us. You loved us and your love was demonstrated in what you did on the cross. And we thank you that we can be saved and healed today, not because of what we do, but because of what you’ve already done.
So we receive your forgiveness, your mercy, your grace. Pour them into our lives and change us from the inside out. Thank you for making us whole.
And Father, those of us who have experienced your healing and wholeness and grace, we ask you to help us now give it away. We’re not saved by good works, but we have been saved for good works that you have prepared for us. Help us to see needs around us as our calling, not a coincidence. And help us to show love to those in need around us by what we do, not just what we say.
