One Another Commands: Two Categories of One Another Commands
Lesson # 2
There are two Categories of “One Another” commands: (1) Negative: what we are not to do (2) Positive: what we are to do.
The negative commands are basically canceled out by obedience to the positive commands.
This reminds us of a very important concept in Scripture, the principle of exchange: of putting off by putting on (Colossians 3:9-10).
Negative Commands:
(1) Do Not Judge One Another:
Romans 14:13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way. (NASB95)
(2) Do Not have Lawsuits With One Another:
1 Corinthians 6:7 Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? (NASB95)
(3) Do Not Bite and Devour One Another:
Galatians 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care lest you be consumed by one another. (NASB95)
(4) Do Not Challenge and Envy One Another:
Galatians 5:26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another. (NASB95)
(5) Do Not Speak Evil or Complain Against One Another:
James 4:11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother, or judges his brother, speaks against the law, and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge of it. (NASB95)
James 5:9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door. (NASB95)
(6) Do Not Seek Glory from One Another:
John 5:44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? (NASB95)
Positive Commands:
(1) Devoted to One Another:
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor. (NASB95)
(2) The Same Mind Toward One Another:
Romans 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. (NASB95)
(3) Build One Another Up:
Romans 14:19 So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. (NASB95)
(4) Accept One Another:
Romans 15:7 Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God. (NASB95)
(5) Wait For One Another:
1 Corinthians 11:33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. (NASB95)
(6) Tolerate One Another:
Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love. (NASB95)
(7) Kind, Tender-hearted and Forgiving to One Another:
Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. (NASB95)
(8) Speak to One Another with Spiritual Songs:
Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord. (NASB95)
(9) Be Subject to One Another:
Ephesians 5:21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. (NASB95)
(10) Regard One Another as More Important than Yourself:
Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves. (NASB95)
(11) Bear with One Another:
Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. (NASB95)
(12) Comfort One Another:
1 Thessalonians 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (NASB95)
(13) Encourage One Another:
1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. (NASB95)
(14) Stimulate One Another to the Performance of Divine Good:
Hebrews 10:24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. (NASB95)
(15) Pray for One Another:
James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. (NASB95)
(16) Hospitable to One Another:
1 Peter 4:9 Be hospitable to one another without complaint. (NASB95)
(17) Serve One Another:
1 Peter 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (NASB95)
(18) Humble toward One Another:
1 Peter 5:5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. (NASB95)
