Death is something you cant predict
people are worried about death and they do crazy things because of the uncertainty of death

I know a guy who saved all his life to buy a cemetery plot. Then he took a cruise and was lost at sea

Why do they sterilize the needles for lethal injections?

984 Major Options After Death
The major options for a person contemplating death and concerned with his body:(1) Reserve a cemetery lot for himself;(2) Be cremated and reduced right away to ashes;(3) Give his body to science for research after death; or(4) Make an appointment to be frozen and stored in a cryotorium, until science finds a cure for his illness, defrosts the body, hopefully restores life, and cures his disease.

988 Grave With A Window
A Turkish watch repairer, All Yucel, has built himself a special grave which has an eight-inch window on top. He plans to install a push-button electric alarm bell inside the grave. If he is buried alive by mistake, he can push the button to call the cemetery’s guard room.He also plans to have an electric light burning inside his grave for one week after his burial. At the week’s end the cemetery guards will check to see if he is really dead and put out the light.
last week we saw the core of our values as a christian
the gospel or the good news
that is christ died, was buried and the third day he was raised to life.
and because he was raised he we all will be raised to life
1 Corinthians 15:20 ESV
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
he is the first fruit of all who has fallen asleep
paul says that when you die you are only asleep.
we are all going to be raised from our sleep.
he is the first fruit. which meas that there are more and we are the rest.
1 Corinthians 15:21–22 ESV
21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
because of Adam we all have to go through death
because of Christ we all be resurrected from the dead.
which means that we are all going to get our bodies back but in a new format, like christ had a new body after his resurrection.
when is the going to happen?
1 Corinthians 15:23 ESV
23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
at his coming - the second coming, or when he comes back
Pathways to Pure Power (SFL; 1 Corinthians) (The Assurance of the Resurrection (15:20–28))
Coming, parousia. The technical term signifying the second advent of Jesus was never used to describe His first coming. Parousia originally was the official term for a visit by a person of high rank, especially a king. It was an arrival that included a permanent presence from that coming onward. The glorified Messiah’s arrival will be followed by a permanent residence with His glorified people
but for those who belong to him
do you belong to him?
the only criteria for you to belong to him is to believe in him
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 ESV
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
Order of Resurrection
Christ
OT Godly men & Women at Christ resurrection (Mat 27:50-53)
Matthew 27:50–53 ESV
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
imagine you are one of those who lived in Jerusalem
you know of your friend who was a godly man or women who had died may be a few years back. can you imagine to see him or her again.
you might get scared, but its a joy to know that even though you were sad that they died and is not with you but to know that they are doing well.
or imagine a man meets his previous wife who was godly, who dies a few years back. that would be awkward yeah.
Order of Resurrection
Christ
OT Godly men & Women at Christ resurrection (Mat 27:50-53)
Who are In Christ - dead (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
Who are In Christ - still alive (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
Unbelievers (who are not in Christ) (Rev 20:12-13)
Revelation 20:12–13 ESV
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.
so what kind of bodies are we going to have
like the body of jesus Christ after the Resurrection
John 20:24–31 ESV
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Luke 24:28–31 ESV
28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.
we can eat with the new bodies
we can talk to people
we can touch others
we can appear and disappear through the rooms
Paul also explains the different types of bodies
1 Corinthians 15:39–41 ESV
39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.
comparison of the two types of bodies
1 Corinthians 15:42–44 ESV
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
Perishable - Imperishable
Dishonor / brokenness - Glory
Weakness - Power / strength
Natural - Spiritual
1 Corinthians 15:24–28 ESV
24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
this is how its all going to end and when we will all be in eternity with God
Paul is bringing all these argument and proofs to show you that there is life after death.
Jesus came back.
other godly people came back
death is going to be defeated.
the first century believers all saw it with their own eyes.
still there is confusion
he brings another arguments
1 Corinthians 15:29 ESV
29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?
here is a funny practice that the corinth church used to do
get baptised for another person after or if they were dead.
unfortunatly paul does not contridict this practice, rather uses this as a practice. we cannot and should not use this one verse to build a doctrine.
moreover water baptism does not take anyone to heaven.
probably paul is saying in a sarcastic manner, in using their own way of life as an argument.
1 Corinthians 15:50–53 ESV
50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
Perishable - Imperishable
Dishonor / brokenness - Glory
Weakness - Power / strength
Natural - Spiritual
