Using Smith's acrostic from SALVE to talk about soul-care.

We’re leaving James, but not really, for today. I came across something in my devotional time using Smith’s Embracing Soul Care that I think is worth sharing. I had intended to share this the first time I went through the book but never seemed to find a place to plug it in. Now seems a fitting time and since he uses a James text we have already examined, it does sort of fit in.
James 1:2–4 NLT
2 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Safety

Smith says that if the wounded soul is to heal it needs a safe place and/or a safe person.

He also says this place or person has to be non-judgmental and where the temptation to give advice is resisted.

I feel like COM is the former, not so much the latter; are we wrong?

Acceptance

John Powell wrote that we are afraid to tell people who we really are because people may not like who we are and who we are is all we’ve got.

Acceptance can’t be based on assessment of blame.

Listening

Sometimes listening is hearing what isn’t being said.

I prefer active listening to passive, “What I hear you saying is...” to help a person clarify what it is they’re saying…and not saying.

Vulnerability

Another person’s story doesn’t mean we have to come up with a similar story from our own experience.

But a person who’s doesn’t hurt can’t help the hurting.

Exploration

Listening gets us to the iceberg; exploration lets us get to the 2/3 that’s underwater.
