What God’s Word Does for You
Psalms 1:1-3; 19:7-11
I like to preach about the Bible. Sometimes I battle between the ease of preaching on it with the need of preaching on it. What I mean is that it is easy to preach on it, it doesn’t take a depth of knowledge, so for a long time I would not preach on the subject a lot. But then, I always found my way back to it because of the necessity of preaching on it and the impact it has on our life and our Christian growth as believers. This morning I want to talk about some basics of what the Word of God does for us. As we look at these things I want you to keep in mind that these things that God does for us are not for our enjoyment, but to enable us to serve him truly. I am very thankful today for what my Lord has done for me. He has forgiven me of my sin; he has given me a home in heaven – and an abundant life on earth. He has given me purpose, direction, and good, so I want to make sure that I continue to grow so that I can be used by Him. Don’t forget:
2 Timothy 3:16–17 AV
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
So, What God Does for You:

I. GOD’S WORD ESTABLISHES YOU

IT IS THE BASIS OF OUR ASSURANCE
1 John 5:13 AV
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
The blood of Christ made us safe; the Word of God makes us sure. Assurance of salvation does not depend on our feelings but on the Word of God. We rest in the promises of God; such as
John 5:24 AV
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

II. GOD’S WORD DEVELOPS YOU

IT IS THE SOURCE OF OUR STRENGTH.
Acts 20:32 AV
And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Matthew 4:4 "not live by bread alone... but by every WORD... God."
Psalm 1:1–3 AV
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

III. GOD’S WORD TEACHES YOU

IT IS THE FOUNT OF ALL KNOWLEDGE.
2 Timothy 3:16 AV
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Proverbs 2:6 AV
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Psalm 19:7 AV
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The one great source of truth – the one greatest source of teaching – the one true most valuable instruction in all of creation is the Word of God. We were at the Ark encounter and I didn’t stay to here it out, but there was a movie crew there with a group from a middle eastern college or from the middle east in general and they were questioning a young lady on the Bible vs. Science and asking how the Bible possibly trump true Science? The girls was struggling with an answer – but the truth is not only does it trump Science it also is greater than any other and all others combined because it gives not only knowledge but wisdom and takes someone who may not normally have much knowledge or wisdom and make them to know wisdom that cannot be explained and knowledge that cannot be compared. The Bible teaches you.

IV. GOD’S WORD REPROVES YOU

IT IS THE STANDARD OF CONDUCT – it tell us where we are at, where we have gone wrong and where we need to get right.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 AV
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Hebrews 4:12 AV
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
There are a few considerations that we need to deal with concerning the reproof that the Bible brings to our attentions:

A. Do you read it?

B. Do you hear it?

C. Do you follow it?

D. Are you hardened to it?

If we are not reading it; hearing it; following it; then we are probably hardened to it.

V. GOD’S WORD COMFORTS YOU

IT IS THE WORD OF CONSOLATION
Romans 15:4 AV
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Psalm 119:52 AV
I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.
Psalm 119:81 AV
CAPH. My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

A. In trouble

John 16:1-4 (He gave Word to sustain us).

B. In death

1 Thessalonians 4:18 AV
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
Whether we’ve lost someone or someone is soon to die, we know that if they are in Christ, that they are on their way to be with Him and we will see them again some day. The Bible Comforts you.

VI. GOD’S WORD CLEANSES YOU

IT IS THE MEANS OF SANCTIFICATION
John 15:3 AV
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
John 17:17 AV
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Ephesians 5:26 AV
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
The Word cleanses. Christ overcame temptation by the Word.
Matthew 4:4 AV
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:7 AV
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Matthew 4:10 AV
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
There are verses that I have memorized through the years that have helped keep me clean. Verses on anger, verses on lust, verses on faith, verses on diligence, verses on Christ’s faithfulness to us… The Bible cleanses you.

VII. GOD’S WORD FURNISHES YOU

IT IS OUR EQUIPMENT FOR SERVICE
2 Timothy 2:15 "Study... workman... rightly dividing the Word."
Ephesians 6:17 AV
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
It is the one weapon we are to use.
2 Corinthians 10:4 AV
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
2 Corinthians 10:10 AV
For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
2 Timothy 4:2 "PREACH THE WORD."

VIII. GOD’S WORD CONTINUES TO MEET THE NEED

2 Corinthians 9:8 AV
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
But it cannot save you. You are saved by believing what it says about the Jesus Christ. You are saved by the blood that was shed on the cross of Calvary to pay for our sin debt.
