The Search For Significance 07/11/21

The second third fourth 1,000 chance is what he is glad to hear today. I know we're missing. Some folks will be praying for them as they travel and vacation, but we're glad that you're here because we're going to start a new series today. And we're going to start on the what I call Victory in Jesus. You see it here on the screen. and today's sermon is entitled, The search for significance, you know, there's a search going on all across this world in the lives of Christian and non-Christian for meaning and purpose and significance. And what we're going to do here in the coming weeks starting next week we're going to be talking about the fruit of the spirit modified today's message come from Galatians 5:16 to 21, but for the next 12 weeks we're going to, we going to be we're going to stay in Galatians 5:6 to 6:16 or 12 weeks. Now you going to Breeze twelve sermons on 10 vs. Well we going to we going to go of the spirit one by one. And we're going to talk about how our life can bear the fruit. Thanks to Bear. You know. The Christian life is never effortless. We were never promised a pain-free or worry-free life if you will. And when Jesus told us to come to him, when he called us to come to him, he told us that his burden would be light. So the Christians burden is light. But why is it so often? Did that feel like does it? It doesn't feel like it is, it is a hard thing to live the Christian Life. It's just hard sometimes. It feels like we're running as fast as we can and we're either staying in the same place where we going backwards. It's what it feels like. Well, I think The answer to that is the source of our energy, anything we do in our own selves and our own the energy. is going to be difficult, but when we rely on the Holy Spirit, He makes the burden light. He makes it light and his strength is boundless. His resources of course or Limitless, and all we have to do is ask for them. So when we ask God to fill us with his Holy Spirit and allow the spirit to control Our Lives, as we allow Christ to sit on the throne of our hearts, our efforts will be fueled by God himself and that's when we will begin to Bear the fruit of the spirit. So today, before we talk about the fruit of the spirit, we will have to talk about something else. And that is the works of the flesh priest, really when we talked about legalism and Hedonism and the things that Christians try to do to find meaning in life. And today, we're going to talk about the works of the flesh. Because this is where the Bible starts here. In our passage, people are searching fighting scratching for something to fill the emptiness in their life. And what we commonly call seeing Galatians chapter 5 cause the works of the flesh. So just remember, as we go over the works of the flesh today, that's basically what that's talkin about his arse in nature. Is our propensity to send you say thoughts like before Humanity. Was that we would find life in him and life. Abundantly, that's his plan for Humanity. He, he, he, he created each of us with different possibilities and potential if we are rightly related with God, but our world has rebelled against this plan, and they have gone out to try to find meaning and purpose and significance and live on their own, and it has ended in the spare. And meaninglessness and people just floating around not knowing, not knowing, god, not having any purpose and meaning and so they turned to other things and these other things are the works of the flesh. So, the Fruit of the Spirit, The Works of the flesh are really the. Only two choices that's open to us, we can live our lives. According to the principles of God, we can allow Jesus to be the center of our lives, or we can live our lives as if God doesn't exist. That's the two choices right there. And so today we're going to talk about living life as if God didn't exist it. So, the title of this is the search for significance. Not what I want to do. Starting Galatians chapter 5, I'm going to get beginning 4:16. I'm going to read down through verse 26, but we're only going through verse 21 today, and as I read, I'm going to stop And explain a few words and some concepts for you here. So this is what the Bible says beginning and Galatians 5 verse 16. I say, then walk in the spirit. And you shall not not fulfill the lust of the flesh. You say, why did you say knock knock mine only has one? Not because it's a double negative. This says, literally in the Greek, you shall not not fulfill the lust of the flesh. You shall not, by no means. Fulfill the lust of the flesh. You shall not ever never fulfill the lust of the flesh. It not a wonderful encouragement that tells us if we walk in the spirit, we buy no way. No means will we fulfill the lust or the desires, the longings of the sinful nature. Say that's a good encouragement right there. Verse 17. For the flash lust, against the spirit Longs against it, and the spirit Against The Flash. And these are contrary to one another. So that you do not that you wish, what does that mean? They're contrary, what's contrary mean in this text, right here in the contact, what does it mean that the spirit and the Flash lost against each other and their country with that word? Contrary. The Greek word is and Teka my and it's based on two words. And t means, what? Against if your auntie something, you're against it, Auntie against came, I means to set or to place. So the spirit, the the Holy Spirit living, on the inside of us and the Flash, our old nature before we were saved. They are set in opposition to each other. They oppose one another. They are contrary to one another, so they're set in opposition. And then the Bible says here in verse 17. So that you do not do the things that you wish. Well, have you ever wish to do something good? But the flash worn out and you didn't you didn't do. So you did the opposite maybe or didn't do what you need to do, which game says, it's anyway, him to North do good, and do it has not to him. It is sin. So sometimes we want to do. Well, we think of something we can do, but yet the flash wins out. But also sometimes the flash is telling us yet. Go ahead, let him have it, you tell him off, but we hold her tongue knowing Sometimes the spirit winds, sometimes the holy spirit. So when he says here, they're contrary want it so that you do not do the things that you wish, sometimes we wish to do bad things. But the spirit we do good things. Sometimes we want to do good things and the Flash wins and we either do nothing or do the opposite so it's just a war going on. That's not we just don't do the things that we might Verse 18 but few are led by the spirit you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident which are adultery fornication. Uncleanness lose a Dollar Tree sorcery, hatred hatred, contentions jealousies outbursts of Wrath selfish, Ambitions, dissensions heresies, Envy murders, drunkenness and the light that he just listed about 10 or 12 things there. But what he saying there is and other things like these that I'm not going to mention. So there's other things and the like, Things like that. This is a life lived in by the power of the Flesh. And other words, these will be the characteristics of a person who lives by the Flesh and up, which I tell you beforehand. Just as I told you in time past, that those who practice, such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. So I read that this week and I said, oh,

because I looked at that list, and I said, I have practice over Saints. More than once. And I'm a preacher. Does that mean that I'm not that? I if I've done these things who hadn't envied Who hadn't been jealous? We all have who hadn't have hatred in their hearts. All of us have Who Hatton have Outburst of anger? All of us have had Outburst of anger more than once in our life. Does that mean that we're not going to heaven in our Salvation? Well, when he says, I told you in time past it, those who practice such things, that word practice means an ongoing ongoing lifestyle. Those who do these things, consistently It's not talking about those who laughs, those who occasionally is talking about those who practice, who their lifestyle is a lifestyle of anger, and wrath and dissension and selfishness and ungodliness. That's what is talkin about. Not someone who does that occasionally or once in awhile because it shows that a person with a lifestyle. Like that is, truly not safe. That's why they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Now, there's 22 and 23. This is what we going to focus on next week, but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace. Long-suffering, kindness goodness, faithfulness, self control. Against such, there is no law and those who are Christ's have crucified, the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the spirit, let us also walk in the spirit. Let us not become conceited. Works of the flesh, provoked other works of the flesh, envying one, another works of the flesh. Well, what I want to do today is I want to talk about the flesh because the Bible begins talking about how the flesh is against the spirit. So here's the first point. The concept of the flesh. Now when somebody told you well you're just in the flesh. When you hear the word flash, think about most of us. Do you skin your bones anyting? That's material flesh and blood or the outward material part of humans. But when you see the word flashing, a special New Testament, it refers to people who are apart from God, it refers to people who do not have God in their life. The flesh, if the flash is used to describe what we were like before we were saved for, we were safe. When we came to Christ, God, filled this void. We had a god-shaped void in our heart, God filled that void and now there's purpose and significance and meaning to life. But before that we wish In other words we just live forever. We were selfish, we were Javi and 1/2 contentions and things like that. That's that's what our life was like. So the concept of the flat ice number one number two, I want you to see the characteristics of The Flash and we see that in verse 18 Now, look what it says in verse 18. but if you are led by the spirit, you are not under The law. Remember last week we talked about people who try to live under the law instead of under God's grace and other words, they live by to-do list. If I do this, do this, don't do this, don't do that. Then God is going to be pleased with me in ways that no one can keep the law perfectly. So, the Bible goes to Great Lengths here to the Scribe, The limitations of the life of the flash. Now, let me give you the first characteristic of a person who lives in the flash. Number one, they cannot please. God. Look at this, we can put it on the screen, Romans chapter 8 and verse 8, Roman 8, 8 that look at this. So then those who are in The Flash, what does that mean? Flesh apart from God, those who are in The Flash. Cannot please God where you can't say it much clearer than that. If we live in the flesh, we cannot please God. Let me say something here. Your life doesn't have to have Envy murder drunkenness, revelries idolatry, and sorcery in it. To live. In the flesh, you can be a Christian and live in the flash. You say how you do that? Because you live under the law, Al God, you don't allow the Holy Spirit to control you. You're controlling Yourself by your behavior. Well I'll go here. Do this, do that. Read my Bible. Go to church, I'll do this, do that. And you leave God out of it. It's just up to you. Well, that's the same as living in the flat home to God, apart from what God is doing in our lives. And if we bring anything to God that we conjure up ourselves where we leave him out of it, it is absolutely useless. What does the bible say that our own righteousness is like filthy what it is useless to God. So it's possible for a Christian to live in The Flash Is the best way to offer with God on the outside. The best that we have to offer God. Apart from his friend is not going to make it. We cannot please God In the Flesh no matter how sincere. And uninformed we are we may be as sincere as we can be and I really want to love God, but if I'm making rules and regulations, and not relying on the Holy Spirit or anyting, I accomplished is absolutely useless as like, filthy rags. We cannot bring that to him because the, In the Flesh, we cannot please God. So it's powerless to please God. The flash is, but it's also powerless to do something that is produced righteousness in our, in our lives. How many people are running around trying to impress God, with all their works. You know, I go on the disaster relief team and, and I'm at church every time the doors open, and I do this, and I serve on this committee, and I serve on that committee, and that's great if you serve in the church, that's wonderful. But if you use that, as a means to get an inside position with God, or if you think he's going to be pleased with you, and you're going to go to heaven based on your work, who are trying to do the spirits work and the energy of the Flash. And that is very dangerous for people who are talented and gifted. Do some people are just so talented. They can just relax of the flesh. So this is why Paul asked the glacian. This question in Galatians 3, verse 3,

He says, are you and to be led by the spirit but now you falling back and you just relying on yourselves you relying on your flesh, you think the flash is going to be foolish. This is what the Apostle Paul said. So that's the characteristics of the flesh. Cannot please, God cannot produce righteousness. Now the last two points little bit longer, I'm going to go through these as quickly and remember, what Jesus said without me, you can do what nothing. So, let's talk about this conflict, the conflict of The Flash and these are some things I want to talk about now, the flash is at war with the spirit. We see that number 17. Now look at it for the flesh, the part of me that's not say that old nature, The Flash lust against the spirit, the Holy Spirit, and the spirit Against The Flash, and these are contrary their opposite. There are opposed to one another so that you can't do the things that you wish. So if you're here today and you're saved, There's two parts of you here today. What do you want before? You became a Christian? Is still there? In case you haven't noticed that old nature of yours is still there and also what you are because you are now Christian. Those are the two parts of you that struggle inwardly. You see when you came to Christ, you were born of the spirit inwardly. But you didn't lose the flash. The old nature is still there and it's still Wars. And I've had people say to me before. Well, I've heard if I accept Christ as my savior, All my struggles in my life will be over.

We Know by experience that that's not true life experiences with know that, that's not true. But some people believe that the friend. Here's, here's the real truth, the day that you accept Christ, that's when your struggles really begin. That's when life gets hard life. Wasn't hard for me before I accepted Christ, matter fact. There was no war going on inside of me before I accepted Christ. Why? Because I was 100% flash. I did what I wanted to do when I wanted to do how I wanted to do. I went where I wanted to go and it didn't bother me a single bit. I can go to R-rated movie, I can go to a G-rated movie, I can go to an x-rated movie when bother me. Why would it bother someone who's living a hundred percent in the flat? There was no war going on because I was totally committed to The Flash. Because I thought that meaning was found in me, but when I accepted Christ, we discover that meaning is found in God and these two concepts have been at war between us ever since that. You were saying it's been a war between your flash and your spirit. And this conflict is one of the most difficult things to for Christians to understand because a lot of Christians go through their life defeated and struggling and they don't know why they just don't know why, why doesn't God take away this struggle? How do you explain the fact that I'm saved? I'm born again. I'm ready to go to heaven but yet I have this intense struggle, they don't understand it. Because it's never been explained to them. Well, I want to give you five causes the right up here of the struggle that we can look at in our own life. Here's the first calls, the impact of age. You say, what do you mean by that? I mean, simply this one of the things that causes a struggle in. Our life is the difference between our spiritual age and our physical age. I think about when were you saved? What, how old were you when you were saying? Well, let me just use me as an example. I was saved when I was 25 years old, Think about this. The Flash had a 25-year Head Start. I lived by The Flash for 25 years, then I'm safe. All of a sudden a war starts going on. What's going to have more influence in my life, 25 years of history or month of History, 25 years, you see if our spiritual age and our physical age. So maybe your flash even had a longer Head, Start All Those Years. The Flash was in planning in our mind. The patterns, the philosophies, the impact of our world in culture and it was teaching me. And then when I accepted Christ, all those fleshly grooves that were axed into my mind. Didn't go away. They're still there. And they have power tool because I live 25 years in the flesh. So age, I'll tell you something else, the influence of our culture you ever seen a culture like ours, the way it's getting now. Is it not just incredible? We, we receive the stimuli if you will from our culture. We are constantly being bombarded with counterfeit meanings constantly bombarded with Auntie. Christian, anti-gay rhetoric the very world that we live in is geared toward the flash, it appeals to our flash. Someone said that the flash is the bridge that is in touch with the world and the world crosses over that bridge into our life and produces attributes that are in opposition to God. And this stimuli Never goes away. Now, our culture is a Godless culture. And there are people in our country today. That hate our country, that hate God, that hate Christians, and they would do anything and everything they can to destroy the Christian Foundation that this country was built upon. They would do anything that they could, there's so much corruption in government. You say, I was thinking of the day. You know, a lot of churches, they support prison Ministries in. There's nothing wrong with that. I believe that you all to take the gospel to the prison's. We ought to take the gospel to the prisoners for friends. Let me tell you, the people who need two gospel, more than prisoners are the politicians and the people that's in government and the people that are leading, our institutions like education, the people in sports, the people in Hollywood, the people in these big corporations that's trying to put push this Marxist agenda upon America to see Christianity, just to melt away, we already taking the gospel to those who lead our country, because the ones who lead our country Are the ones with this Godless Godless view of our world and they're trying to send us in a direction that we do not want to go. That's the people who need to hear the gospel. Yes, prisoners need to hear it. Of course they do and those things are good but we need to be reaching the leadership of our nation. So it's the influence of you look on the internet. You watch TV, just bombarded with these things. That appeals to the flash number to letter c. We also see the inadequacy. Of the way we've been trained. Now I've already mentioned this a little bit. There's thousands of Christians who have never been told that there's a struggle. They go through the whole life wondering what's wrong with them and they try to hide it, they come to church but they don't want people to see behind the curtain. If someone could see behind the curtain of their life. They said I never be able to go to that church. Again, people just think I'm the meanest most evil person that there is because they never been tranqed. They never gotten the information to help them to deal with the conflict in their lives. And that's what the teaching of the word of God is for the purpose of presenting us as Christians as mature and perfect in the Lord. Someone said that the word of God is going to whip that subdues, the wild Tendencies of the Flesh. And that is exactly right. But if we had never talked about the spirit of God, if we, if we never mention the conflict going on in our lives, people won't know, and they'll just go through this alone. And they will not know how to deal with it another. Is the incompatibility of our lifestyle. Now, think about this. If you're here today and you're safe, I want to say something about you. You are an odd person. Not just just think about that. You aw Tozer said the real Christian.

Is a odd human being. If someone asks inside, what why do you say that we're off. This is what he said. He says because the real Christian feels a supreme love for somebody. He's never seen. He said the real Christian everyday talks to a person. He's never seen. In prayer. He said that. A real Christian expects to go to heaven. Not based on his own merits, but on the merits or someone, he's never seen and who died on a cross. That's odd. He said, In other work, we empty ourselves in order to be full. We admit that we were wrong to be declared right? In order to go up, we believe that you have to first go down, you have to show humility. What did Paul say I am strongest? When I'm white when I'm weak. That's the opposite of the world. I am rich when I'm what poor the opposite of the world. I have to die to myself so that I might not so that I might live. That's just opposite. I forsake in order to have, I give in order to have more You see. It doesn't make sense. We see the invisible. We hear the inaudible. And we have a knowledge that passes all understanding best friends list. That's why the spiritual part of you is struggling with the part of the flash because we're incompatible. We just look at life photo Ali different and it not going to get any better. Let me give you one more will quickly go to the last point. The irresponsibility of her own. Life's we talked about age and culture talked about training and lifestyle, but then the irresponsibility of our own lives. The word of God was given to us as instruction that we need in order to deal with this conflict in our life. But the truth of the matter is, all of us are about as holy as we want to be. I mean that's just the truth. Where is Holy as we want to be, I was talking to a lady one time. She had been saying about two years. I used to work with her name is Angie. And she wants, she got say, she started going to church and Sunday school, and she go on Wednesday night when she could and she would go to. The ladies conference is in ladies, Bible studies. And then after about two years, she stopped doing that. And she just started going on Sunday mornings. And she told me one, one day at work. She said, She said, we took the children out of Sunday school, and we're not going to Sunday school. We just go to preach. And I said, why did you do that? And she said, well, she said, the Sunday School rooms were kind of cramped, and the children didn't like some of the children in their classes. And I just felt like that, you know, I get more out of the preaching than I do the Sunday school. And I looked at her and I asked her, I said, let me ask you something. I said, what have you found in your life? That makes it possible for you and this stage of your spiritual growth and development. That you can avoid every opportunity. God has given you to grow, except for one. I said, what makes you think that you can do that? I said, why do you think you can avoid all these opportunity for you to grow and mature in your faith? You see being absent from the teaching of the word of God. From the opportunities. For growth, we become responsible for the own defeat in our life. When we have this conflict between the spirit and the flesh. If we're not feeding the spirit, The Flash is being fed Everyday by media. Social media TV, whatever you listen to movies is being fed. And what ends up happening, is that that the flash is on a 3000 calorie diet. Why the spirit is on a low calorie diet, we feed the flash, but we think we just don't need to feed the spirit that much. I'll just kind of go when I want to. Well, this is true when it talks about our growth in our prayer, Life Church, attendance or whatever, relationship to the word of God. One of the reasons we struggle so much is because the world is feeding the old nature and we are starving the new nature. Well, so that's the conflict. Of The Flash. Lastly, let's look at the conduct of the flash now. Paul list, all these things here. And let me just let me just say, Let Me Go by, let me just say one more thing this issue of conflict. Don't think that you're the only one that experience is it. Well, maybe I should ask this.

Do you even sense a War or conflict in your life? Do you sense it? Because if you don't cuz I've iPod people before now Christian people I said this war going on this conflict. I don't I don't say I'm happy as I can be. Rent, if if you don't sense I wore and a conflict in your life you had better check up on your face. Cuz if you're a real Christian, you going to experience and you're going to know it. And if you don't there something wrong at this is not just for immature people, this is for all of us who's won the most mature people in the Bible. I would have to say is the Apostle Paul he wrote most of the New Testament. I mean, he was a scholar, he was a Hebrew of Hebrews. I mean, he was just a man that we want to imitate. Look what he said.

Apostle Paul. In Romans chapter 7. That's okay. Listen to this, what he says, this is the Apostle Paul. Now, That's okay. Just the next next flight. There you go. I know what's this for? I know that in me. That is my flash or nature. Nothing good. Dwells for to will is present with me, but how to perform, what is good. I do not find. He says the wheel is there to do well, but I can't find. I just can't do it. All right, what? Look in the next verse. For the good that I will to do the good that I want to do. I do not do but the evil I don't want to do that. I practice. Now, look at this. Now if I do what I will not to do it is no longer I who do it. But what send dwells in me, what we say the flash wasn't glacias. Just another word for seeing he said seeing that dwells in it. Next verse, I find then a law that evil is present with me. The one who Wills who wants to do good.

For I Delight in the law of God. According to the inward man. He said, I like it, it's good. But I see another law in my members, there's that word warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law sin, which is in my members.

Oh, Wretched, Man. That I am, who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God through Jesus Christ Our Lord. So then with the mind, I myself serve the law of God. But with the flesh, the Lost in the most spiritual man, you're probably ever meet when we get to heaven. And he told us the things I want to do I don't in the things I shouldn't do I do he battled the same as we do the flesh Against The Spirit? Well let's look at the conduct and will close icing versus 19 through 21. I'm not going to read all those again, but I'm going to break them down in categories. The Works of the flesh. Again remember is the striving of a person who is trying to find meaning and significance apart from God. And a person who seeks to find meaning apart from God, will find himself involved in these things right here. That we have listed. Here, they are number one searching for significance in sexuality. You see that in verse 19, works on plaster, Avenue adultery fornication uncleanness lunasol that has to do with sexual sin. Paul said there's a whole group of folks who think that significance is found in the sensual things of life in our world is running wild right now and ask him, you know, seeking meaning in sexuality as if the glands in their body where the gods of their life. And I said this on one of my daily devotions, this week, this coming year, they have started giving out free condoms to elementary students in Chicago and they're teaching first-graders about masturbation. My friend that is is ungodly and unprecedented, as you can get, but our, our nation is running crazy over sexual sin, but people try to find meaning and significance in that when you don't have God, you have to go to something number to or let her be. Searching for meaning in prosperity. This is another one here, look at this word I Dollar Tree, what does that mean? Why people say what I said in the Old Testament? Know it's alive. And well, today on the dollar is one who has made up his mind. Where and how he will find life and whatever he has to do, he's going to, he's going to do it. In other words, I'm a doctor or someone who worships something else other than God. That's the god of their life and Friends material is on his. I do we have built in our generation, get all you can. Can I call you get, and keep it for yourself materialism. So we see sexuality and prosperity. See searching for significance. In religion. Here's the legalist. Hear that word sorcery. You see that word there and inverse. 20 idolatry sorcery, sorcery comes from the Greek word pharmakeia. We get our word pharmacy from it. It means drugs is what is talking about. In other words, it speaks of a group of people & Paws. They who built the religion around the occult and mind-altering drugs. These religious people found, meaning in religion and there's thousands of people today who are involved in the occult, Christianity is not a religion, is a relationship. That's one thing we have to be thankful. We don't have to be religious, we just have a relationship with the savior of this world, but many people are trying to find meaning in religion, Significance. In religion letter d. Searching for significance in Independence. Now this all these that list, hatred variance, wrath strife's, Edition, heresy envion murders. All those are the out workings of people who have set themselves up to be God in their life. And what happens while they run into other people who have set themselves up to be God. So then you have all these little Gods bumping into each other and it causes conflict and strife and jealousy and envy ink intentions and things like that. They bump into each other. All of these, all these are works of the Flesh and it involves interpersonal, relational, sins. And then there's one more category. E, I call it significance in debauchery or you could in today's terminology, you would say. So finding significance in partying. It says, drunkenness and revelries. in verse 21 activities, let me tell you what it is and I know because I was a director of a halfway house for men, with alcohol and drug addiction. Let me tell you why people go to alcohol and drugs. They do it. So that they can feel their lives with something so that they don't have to think about how empty their lives are. That's why people turn to these things but God has something better for us. He wants to bring meaning in life and it's no longer we do. We no longer have to push life away because Christ will bring mean and he wants to make life beautiful and he wants the fruit of the spirit. What we're going to talk about next week to be the portrait of your life. That's not the works of the flesh, everything we just read. That's not what he wants. He wants to come to the emptiness of your being and he wants you to make Jesus Christ, the lord of your life. So if you're not a Christian this morning, the only thing you can do or works of the flesh. but if you are Christian, But the Lord is not Lord of your life and you're not being led by the spirit, then you two can do the works of the flesh. You say it is possible for Christians to operate in the energy of the flash. The only real answer is to give the Son of God. Jesus Christ. His proper place in your life and Lead got it and directed by the Holy Spirit and friends. That's what we're going to talk about for the next 11 weeks. Amen. All right, let's pray. Father, we do. Thank you and praise. You and love you today for, for your word. Lord, what a passage of scripture we covered today or we all know if we're honest about his conflict in our life, And we know how hard it is to deal with this old nature. This fleshly nature of our, we like Paul. We understand how it feels to want to do the right thing, but for some reason we do the wrong thing. Lord help. Everyone is here today that we would just determined in our hearts and mind. That from this series here, we're going to learn what it means to walk into live in the spirit and Lord that we want the characteristics in our lives.
