Agree or disagree?

What is the basis upon which we make our decisions?
What do we use to establish law?
Our life will put into clear focus that which we hold as a standard and that which we reject.
As Christians, we have one standard and that is God. He is the basis for all authority, all truth, and all practice.
Today’s message will give us a chance to think about whether or not our lives are in agreement (in Accord) or in disagreement with God.

1 Timothy 1:6–11 ESV
6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions. 8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.

False teachers don’t make truth . . . untrue.

1 Timothy 1:6–7 ESV
6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
They claim to know the truth . . . the law of God. But their actions make it clear that they don’t even understand it.
In our culture you will hear people say, “If that is what God is like then I don’t want anything to do with him.” “If God won’t let me be me then I reject him.”
What they are doing is subtly changing the truth so that they can claim that God is on their side because their own version of truth can’t possibly be wrong.
Paul warns Timothy to keep these people from teaching false doctrine.
1 Timothy 1:3–4 ESV
3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.
These teachers missed the point of God’s law and were teaching lies.

The Point of the Law

1 Timothy 1:8 ESV
8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
1 Timothy 1:9 (ESV) 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane,
What is the law for . . . it exists to show us our sin.
Who is the law for:
The lawless
The Ungodly
The sinners
The unholy
The profane
Those who strike their parents
The murderers
The sexually immoral
Those who practice homosexuality
The enslavers
The perjurers
People living according to false doctrine.
It is not for the just.

In accordance with the Gospel

1 Timothy 1:11 ESV
11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
The two ways we go astray:
Willfulness
Willfulness take something good that God gave us and turns it into a means by which we defy God.
Legalism
Legalism is the result of our willfulness and with it comes awareness of our need for God.
On one hand we believe we know better than God and can “save” ourselves.
i.e. my truth
On the other hand we believe that our own righteous ability to obey the law (and alter it to meet our standards) will make us worthy of being saved.
i.e. the good person.
The Psalmist gets it right.
Psalm 24:1–10 ESV
1 The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, 2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. 5 He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah 7 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! 9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
Are you prone to willfulness or legalism.
