The Father

Matthew 6:9–10 NASB95

“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

Father - πατήρ (patēr), πατρός (patros), (ho): n.masc.; ≡ DBLHebr 3; Str 3962—1. LN 10.14 father, male parent (Lk 2:48; Heb 12:9); 2. LN 10.18 parents, both mother and father (Heb 11:23); 3. LN 10.20 ancestor, forefather (Ac 3:13); 4. LN 12.12 Father (title for God), (Jn 10:15; Lk 23:34 v.r.); 5. LN 87.48 father (title for a high ranking person), (Mt 23:9)

Why is it important to understand that God is our Father?

Why is understanding the location of Heaven so important?

Hallowed - ἁγιάζω (hagiazō): vb.; ≡ DBLHebr 7727; Str 37; TDNT 1.111—1. LN 53.44 dedicate, to service and loyalty to God (1Co 1:2); 2. LN 88.26 make holy, sanctify, to cause one to have the quality of holiness (1Th 5:23); 3. LN 88.27 honor as holy, hallow, feel reverence, regard as holy (Mt 6:9)

Psalm 148:13 NASB95

Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.

The first part of this prayer is for the believer to adore, worship, and submit to God the Father, this is putting in order your first affections.

The Requests

Matthew 6:11–13 NASB95

‘Give us this day our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’

It is in these last three verses do we see four requests.

1. Provide for us

2. Forgive us our sins

3. Don’t let us succumb to temptation

4. deliver us through the tests of righteousness

Proverbs 30:8; Matthew 6:34; Matthew 5:23–24; 1 Corinthians 14:33; Psalm 37:23; Proverbs 16:9; James 1:2–4; 1 Peter 1:6

Putting it all Together

The Lord’s Prayer is a formula of how to pray, not the words to pray, in knowing this our prayers should be structured like this.

1. Adoration of God the Father

2. Worship of God the Father

3. Submission to God the Father

4. Requesting our daily provision

5. Confessing our sins

6. Requesting God’s guidance in our spiritual and physical walk

7. Requesting deliverance through the testing of our faith

Seven steps of proper submission in prayer to God the Father, these steps ensure that our first affection is God, our first worship is God, our first submission is to God, our daily provision is from God, our forgiveness is from God, our guidance is from God, our deliverance is from God. This ensures God first.

Exodus 20:3 NASB95

“You shall have no other gods before Me.

Matthew 6:33 NASB95

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Colossians 3:1–4 NASB95

Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

John 3:30 NASB95

“He must increase, but I must decrease.
