Gen 1&2
Start with the rule not the exception & Submit for the Lord’s sake
Freedom
Honor everyone, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the emperor
1 Peter 2:18–25 ESV
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Servants/Slaves

Peter uses a contemporary example of how Christians should live - Slavery was as common as electricity

Different than modern slavery

What we think of slavery
Based on the color of the skin
Manual labor
Forced
Life long
In the day
The Roman and Greek worlds anchored their entire economic system in this institution. Some have estimated that one-third of the population in urban areas was slave population.
Could be voluntarily to become a Roman Citizen
Slavery was not usually a permanent condition of life
Slaves could own other slaves
Slaves could be of high standing in society
Doctors, teachers, writers, accountants, agents, bailiffs, overseers, secretaries, and sea-captains
The Point - Context is everything
Slavery is not good
The way Jesus approaches us is the way we should approach society
2nd point
Put yourself in the shoes of someone who no matter how hard they work they are subject to the whimsical mood of there masters
like working, but different - you can’t get a different job
What is deemed good one day is bad the next
Some people just turn out to be mean and downright bad people

Suffering Unjustly

VS 19

Gracious - can be a gift OR favor, commendable, worthy of praise

Suffering

This can mean a lot of things to each of you
Physical Pain
Emotional Pain
Spiritual abuse
Much worse - if you know - you know

But the qualification is on “mindful of God”

This means that if you are suffering because you took a hammer and hit your head - it doesn’t count
OR
If you drink and drive and get in a car accident it’s not the same as helping out a non-christian friend and getting in a car accident that causes permanent damage.

Enduring - (exile) continue moving forward

living as a free person under the banner of Christ

VS 20

Sight of God - endurance
Luke 6:32–36 ESV
32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Called

VS 21

The whole passage hinges from something cultural about some people to all Christians at all times
You have been called - to endure suffering - mindful of God and his kingdom
Follow his example VS 22-
Jesus Did NOT
No sin
No deceit in his mouth
When reviled didn’t do the same
- to speak in a highly insulting manner — Slander
When He suffered he didn’t threaten
Jesus DID
Entrust himself to God - Faith
Through his body - on a tree
for others

Closing
