Historic Creeds and Confessions (Apostles’ Creed)
I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried; The third day he rose again from the dead He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Psalter Lesson

Psalm 24 ESV
A Psalm of David. 1 The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, 2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. 5 He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah 7 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! 9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah

Repentance and the Promise that Follows.

Our Gospel reading for today is Mark 6:14-29, I am not going to preach it.
Because two verses before it. I found a little gem that I believe God wants us all to hear.
A little gem about the importance of repentance and the promise that follows.
Mark 6:14–29 (ESV)
14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus is in his home town and he can do no miracles there because of there unbelief.
Mark 6:6–13 ESV
6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching. 7 And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
Jesus sends out his disciples.
He sent them with
no staff
no bread
no bag
no money
no extra tunic
Basically with only the clothes on their backs and the sandals upon there feet.
and one other.
AUTHORITY OVER THE UNCLEAN SPIRITS.
He told them to enter a house ans stay until you leave.
Stay in one house while you are in that city.
If any does not welcome you, shake the dust off of your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.
Not everyone will hear your message. Put it behind you.
Mark 6:12 ESV
12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent.
Repentance is always the proper response to God.
It is always the proper response to the Gospel.
If you have not been moved to repentance.
If you have not felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
If it has not become apparent to you that God is righteous and Holy, and you are not.
Then either the gospel wasn’t preached or you didn’t hear it.
Mark 6:13 ESV
13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
They went out and cast out demons, and healed the sick.
But their message was repent.
It was the message of John the Baptist as he prepared the way for Christ.
Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Repent the time has come.
Repent there is one who is coming after me, who shoes I am not worthy to untie.
When Peter preached his first Gospel message in the book of Acts. His calling was to repent.
Let me set the scene for you.
Jesus has been crucified, dead, and buried. He rose from the dead and spent 40 days proving himself to be alive.
He ascended into heaven, but just before he did, he left his disciple with these instructions.
Acts 1:4–8 ESV
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
He told them to wait for the promise of the Father.
And so they waited and prayed.
120 of them were gathered in an upper room when the Holy Spirit fell on them.
The sound of mighty rushing wind
Cloven tongues of fire fell on each of them.
And they began to speak the wonderful things of God in languages they didn’t understand.
It made such a commotion that people from all over town came to see what was going on.
It just so happened that Jerusalem was full of Jews from every tribe and nation.
They were their to celebrate Pentecost. The feast of weeks.
They were amazed at what they heard.
Are not all these men Galileans, how is it we hear them speaking in our own native tongue?
They were perplexed and saying to one another “what does this mean?”
PETER WITH THE ELEVEN RAISED HIS VOICE AND BEGAN TO PREACH.
He starts with the prophet Joel and tells them that this is was prophecied.
Acts 2:17–21 ESV
17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20 the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
He told them that Jesus was a man attested to them by God with deeds of power, signs and wonders. He was handed over to them by the foreknowledge of God according to a definite plan.
And he said to them You crucified him.
You nailed him to the tree.
You did it.
Because you did not believe that he was the Son of God.
But, Jesus was raised up,
He was raised from the dead.
We are all witnesses.
He ends his sermon with these words
Acts 2:36 ESV
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Acts 2:37 ESV
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
It became apparent to them that Jesus was the righteous Son of God and that they had crucified him. But God had raised him up.
And their hearts were broken.
And they said. WHAT SHALL WE DO?
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Repentance is the proper response to the gospel.
Baptism too. But we will save that for another day.
Turn from your sin.
Stop sinning completely the first time you hear the gospel.
It would be nice if it worked that way.
Repentance means to change your mind.
To change you mind about God.
To put God on the throne of our life.
REPENTANCE IS THE PROPER RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL.
THERE IS A PROMISE THAT COMES AS WELL.
Acts 2:38 (ESV)
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The promise is two-fold.
Forgiveness of sins.
Indwelling Holy Spirit.

Forgiveness of sins.

God will not hold you accountable for the sins you commit. You sins are covered by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the lamb of God.
This is wonderful news. Almost to good and easy to misunderstand. I can just do what I want and it’s all good.
Paul addresses this very line of thinking.
Romans 6:1–4 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
For the believer there is a new way of life.
Perfect. Heavens no!
But moving on to perfection.
Yes.

Promise of the Father.

Jesus told the disciple to wait for the promise of the Father.
They waited and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
Peter preached to the Jews.
They believed and were filled .
In other words when you respond to the Gospel through repentance. When you change your mind about God and your sin. The Holy Spirit of God will take up residence in your heart.
I believe that this is a first time thing and an every time thing.
The first time you hear and respond to the gospel, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart.
Every time after you hear and respond to gospel, the Holy Spirit moves within you in to bring you joy, and peace, assurance of salvation, and the assurance that God is really with you.
When you read your scriptures, when you pray, when you worship, when you rest, when meditate, when you participate in the things of God in any way, the Holy Spirit moves within you and assures that God really is with you.
Two things you should always look and listen for in a gospel message, or gospel reading, or personal study, or prayer.
A call to repentance.
The promise of the Father. The Holy Spirit dwelling within you and the forgiveness of sin.
FATHER, SON and HOLY SPIRIT.
