Zechariah Summary

Introduction

Zechariah 1:3–4 ESV

Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.

20 years after Babylonian Exile. Will the nation be restored? What will our future look like? Will Israel participate in this blessing?

Zechariah- YHWH has remember (covenant). Contemporaries with Haggai- the temple guy. Priestly lineage (Zech 1:1) . Later mentioned in Matt 23:35, Luke 11:51. Cyrus issues a decree that they can return to Jerusalem to reconstruct their temple that is to be destroyed. First round of exiles return to rebuild, and they do not see eye to eye. Especially with their neighboring Samaritans who were the result of Israel intermarrying with the other nations. 2 Kings later Darius comes along and the construction begins March 12, 513 BC.
