Back to the Sea
Back to the Sea
The Pharisees and Herodians are plotting to kill Jesus but Jesus’ popularity is only increasing with the common people.
Look at how far flung his followers are now. Jesus’ popularity is well represented across different ethnicities and social milieu. There were no Gallup polls back then but I wish there were because it appears that Jesus is polling high.
Christian Standard Bible (Chapter 3)
People followed Jesus from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, (Edom) beyond the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon (Non-Israelite locations).
Genesis 12:3 (CSB)
I will bless those who bless you,I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
Isaiah 11:10 (CSB)
On that day the root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will look to him for guidance, and his resting place will be glorious.
Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Revelation 5:9 (CSB)
And they sang a new song: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slaughtered, and you purchased people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation.
He had to preach off of a boat. Because the seashore was packed with people and they would have crushed Him.
Jesus is beside the sea again. What happened the last 2 times he was by the sea? The first time He was by Himself and the second time He was followed by large crowds. His following now can only be described at messianic. Even the demons are declaring Him as the Son of God.
btw: Mark does not used the term Son of God very often. He starts off his book with it (verse 1) and He ends with it (Roman Soldier)....It is an incredibly strong statement of the divinity of Jesus.
Why did Jesus not permit the demons to tell who He was? Naming in the bible is significant. Adam named the animals and God gave him dominion over them. The Demons would not be allowed to try and have any claim over Jesus.
Now He goes to a high mountain and and calls the 12 disciples.
There is so much symbolism here.
The High mountain - like Moses and the founding of the nation of Israel. Jesus is on a mountain founding a Kingdom. The Kingdom of God. This is perhaps the real birthday of the church.
The number 12. These 12 were the ones He wanted. They were chosen like the 12 tribes of Isreal. Like the 12 tribes of old they were chosen from among the nations that were following Him.
the word Apostle means ‘sent out one’ Jesus calls them to Him to then send them out.
They are not called apostles again until the end of the book or Mark. He sees you not for what you are but rather He sees you for what you going to become. The Pharisees are the ones in Marks gospel who want to label you for what you are based on your past. But not Jesus. He calls tax collectors and cleanses lepers.
Illustration Chris Davis was defined by the 1st day of kindergarten.
He calls them not to a study of the law or to learn a type of work, but rather He calls them to Himself. and He summoned those he wanted, and they came to Him verse 13. Some will say God has helped me others will say God is my help!
the word church means the. “the called out ones” They very word church in the Greek carries this sense of being called to Jesus.
He did not appoint them He made them the Greek word is Poieo, to make, to do! It is the same word used to speak of God making heaven and the earth.
And they are sent to do the same things that Jesus does. With the exception of forgiving sins.
They are to be an extension of His ministry.
While the leadership of the current nation of Isreal is piloting to kill Him Jesus is busy developing a new leadership for the founding of a kingdom that will never be destroyed.
You would think everyone is following Jesus at this point but look at verse 20.
Although Jesus’ ministry at this point is momentous to His own family He is misunderstood.
His family wanted to restrain him in the Greek take Him away…which means to arrest someone.
The irony is that the demons are calling Him the Son of God and He family wants to call a doctor because they are calling him insane.
Jesus has crowds of people who believe in Him and the Demons know who Jesus is but his own family does not believe in Him.
(For not even his brothers believed in him.)
following Jesus is a relational adventure. He calls you not to join a club but to be adopted into a family.
Jesus draws new lines of community. Following Him in faith might supersede even the bonds of your earthy kinship.
Finish this statement for me, Blood runs thicker than ......
Jesus would probably say faith in Him runs thicker than blood.
Anyone could follow Jesus but the apostles were chosen. Everyone is born into a family but adoption into Jesus’s family is only for those who do God’s will.
The apostles are not self made they are Jesus made. The family of Jesus is formed by a willingness to be a part of what Jesus is doing.
Jesus is interested in those who are willing to be involved in His future plan.
BIG IDEA: Jesus does not use you based off your past....Jesus uses you based off your willingness to be a part of His future.
I want Kearney Bible Church to be a part of what Jesus is doing in the future.
God in his holy dwelling is
a father of the fatherless
and a champion of widows.
God provides homes for those who are deserted.
He leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
but the rebellious live in a scorched land.
