Psalm 149
Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints.
Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King!
Let them praise his name with dancing, and make music to him with tambourine and harp.
For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation.
Let the saints rejoice in his honor; and sing for joy on their beds.
May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double edged sword in their hands,
to inflict vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples,
to bind their kings with fetters, their nobles with fetters their nobles with shackles of iron,
to carry out the sentence written against them
This is glory of all his saints.
Praise the Lord!
*LET US PRAY
Prayer of Confession and Repentance
O Lamb of God, who, both by your example and precept, instructed us to be meek and humble,
give us grace throughout our whole lives, in every thought, and word, and work, to imitate your meekness and humility.
Mortify in us any pride; grant us to feel that we are nothing and have nothing, and that I deserve nothing but shame and contempt,
Grant, O Lord, that we may look for nothing, claim nothing; and that we may go through all the scenes of life, not seeking our own glory,
but looking wholly unto you, and acting wholly for you. Let us never speak any word that may tend to our own praise,
Let our ears and our hearts be ever shut to the praise that comes from men.
Give me a dread of applause, in whatsoever form, and from whatsoever tongue, it comes.
Deliver our souls from the snare of hell; Whosoever perishes thereby, let their blood be upon their own head,
O giver of every good and perfect gift, if at any time you please to work by our hands,
teach us to discern what is our own from what is another’s,
and to render unto you the things that are yours. As all the good that is done on earth is from you,
let us give you all the glory honour and praise, In Christ’s name Amen.
Assurance of Pardon……Hebrews 9:11-14

11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

LET US PRAY
Congregational Prayer
Lord, teach us to be resigned to your will; teach us to delight in your law;
teach us to have no will but your will; teach us to be sure that everything you do is good and is the very best that can be done.
Help us to leave our concerns in your divine hands, being persuaded that you have sway even over evil; that out of it you bring good,
till your high purposes shall develop in your own perfect glory,
and in the perfect bliss of all those who put their trust in you.

Scripture Reading……...………………..……..…… Proverbs 8:1-36

8 Does not wisdom call?

Does not understanding raise her voice?

2  On the heights beside the way,

at the crossroads she takes her stand;

3  beside the gates in front of the town,

at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:

4  “To you, O men, I call,

and my cry is to the children of man.

5  O simple ones, learn prudence;

O fools, learn sense.

6  Hear, for I will speak noble things,

and from my lips will come what is right,

7  for my mouth will utter truth;

wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8  All the words of my mouth are righteous;

there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.

9  They are all straight to him who understands,

and right to those who find knowledge.

10  Take my instruction instead of silver,

and knowledge rather than choice gold,

11  for wisdom is better than jewels,

and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

12  “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,

and I find knowledge and discretion.

13  The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.

Pride and arrogance and the way of evil

and perverted speech I hate.

14  I have counsel and sound wisdom;

I have insight; I have strength.

15  By me kings reign,

and rulers decree what is just;

16  by me princes rule,

and nobles, all who govern justly.

17  I love those who love me,

and those who seek me diligently find me.

18  Riches and honor are with me,

enduring wealth and righteousness.

19  My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold,

and my yield than choice silver.

20  I walk in the way of righteousness,

in the paths of justice,

21  granting an inheritance to those who love me,

and filling their treasuries.

22  “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work,

the first of his acts of old.

23  Ages ago I was set up,

at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

24  When there were no depths I was brought forth,

when there were no springs abounding with water.

25  Before the mountains had been shaped,

before the hills, I was brought forth,

26  before he had made the earth with its fields,

or the first of the dust of the world.

27  When he established the heavens, I was there;

when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,

28  when he made firm the skies above,

when he established the fountains of the deep,

29  when he assigned to the sea its limit,

so that the waters might not transgress his command,

when he marked out the foundations of the earth,

30  then I was beside him, like a master workman,

and I was daily his delight,

rejoicing before him always,

31  rejoicing in his inhabited world

and delighting in the children of man.

32  “And now, O sons, listen to me:

blessed are those who keep my ways.

33  Hear instruction and be wise,

and do not neglect it.

34  Blessed is the one who listens to me,

watching daily at my gates,

waiting beside my doors.

35  For whoever finds me finds life

and obtains favor from the Lord,

36  but he who fails to find me injures himself;

all who hate me love death.”

Let the Lord add his blessing to this reading of His Word

Hear now the Very Word of God

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

1 John 5:13-21 Knowing and living like you will live forever.

This morning we will be looking at the conclusion or the crux of what John has been communicating to the early church throughout this entire book.
Let’s look at the main themes of the past sermons as an overview of what we have covered to this point in past months.
We have looked at

The Gospel and the Perfect love of God 1 John 4:7-21
Those who believe and love Overcome the World 1 John 5:1-5
The testimony of three that is essential for eternal life 1 John 5:6-12
And in todays text this morning
We will learn about
Knowing and living like you will live forever 1John 5:13-21
Knowing and living like you will live forever
which encompasses all these themes and topics John has shared with us so that we can
Know and live like we will live forever.
So lets look at verses 13-15 which is about God’s Will and our prayers
John says

vs 13-15 Gods will, and our prayers.

This is a fundamental principle to know for christian living brothers and sisters.
That we have eternal life if we believe in the name of the Son of God
If you are resting in Christ alone for your salvation then you have eternal life.
But John goes on to tell us in verse 14
vs 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
Our prayers should be to only ask for things according to the will of God.
So if God calls something good like overcoming sin.
Which is a good thing.
We are called to overcome sin the devil and this world.
because sin separated man in the garden from God.
So how should we pray?
How do we pray according to God’s Will
Well fist off we need to know our Bibles if we are going to pray according to God’s will.
Because many today in the church pray un biblical prayers.
And if we pray for things that are contrary to Gods will
I can guarantee even if they do come to pass it wasn’t because of your prayer.
So know your Bibles.
And know how to pray.
Our catechism states
We should Pray offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will,
they should and only will be answered
because we offer them in the name of Christ our mediator,
We should confess our sins to the lord when we come before him in prayer.
and we should have a thankful acknowledgement of Christs mercies towards us.
This is the teaching of Scripture and our catechism in question 98
So God has not left us to be ignorant regarding how we are to approach him in prayer.
And what has he given us as John puts it “We are to ask for anything according to his will”
His will is found in the Bible
the 66 books of the Bible
The Scriptures alone
So its the whole Word of God which is of use to direct us in prayer.
And if you are a new believers and are still trying to grasp the vastness of the Scriptures we have a special rule for direction in our prayers as well.
Do we know what this is?
It’s the Lords Prayer
Christ taught it to his disciples when he walked the earth.
And he calls you his disciples today to pray in this manner.
Becasue its according to his will.
Its found in Matthew 6:9-13 which reads

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

10  Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11  Give us this day our daily bread,

12  and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13  And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

And Luke 11:2-4

11 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come.

3  Give us each day our daily bread,

4  and forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And lead us not into temptation.”

If these things in the Lords prayer resonate with you.
If you say I believe that Christ is the Son of God.
I believe he has conquered Sin on my behalf.
I believe he has conquered the devil
I believe he has called me to obey his word
and everything that is according to his will
Then you have eternal life according to God
You have eternal life according to John.
If your desire is to be a follower of Christ the Spirit of God gave you that desire.
And so according to John you should have confidence because this is the will God for you to have eternal life.
And to be sure you are a follower of his.
Not doubting your salvation
Which some false teachers today would lead you to doubt you have eternal life.
Because they have twisted the scriptures to say something they do not.
But John writes to us so we may KNOW that we have eternal life.
And that their is No sin that Jesus Christ has not paid the penalty for
the elect of God who are called to himself before the foundation of the world.
Another passage of Scripture that teach this are
Romans 8:15-

15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

This is Gods will that you are Knowing and Living like you will live forever.
So we should know how to pray
And Pray boldly like those who are called by God to live forever.
But we can’t be bold if we are ignorant.
And God calls you to Boldness through the knowledge and application found in his word.
Next in verses 16-19 we read about

vs 16-19 How we are to pray for or Brothers and Sisters

English Standard Version (Chapter 5)
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that.
17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death
.18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
So what is the sin that leads unto death?
What is the sin that John says will deny someone eternal life?
it is not breaking one of the ten commandments?
Becasue you and I have all broken those in thought word and deed in our lives.
John is pointing out that the sin that leads to death is apostacy.
Those who deny the full divinity and humanity of Christ.
Those Gnostics of John’s day are committing the sin that leads unto death.
The Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses of our day are committing the sin that leads unto death.
Those who are trusting in a baptism to save them apart from the finished work of Christ - like the “Church of Christ”
The Roman Catholic Church who adds works to Salvation.
These are the sin’s unto death.
These are the sins that should have a person questioning their faith.
The sin that leads unto death is simply denying who Christ was
and what the Word of God declares about him to be true
God never deprives his own people of the grace of the Spirit;
but we will always retain some spark of true religion.
Those people who deny the Son of God on the other hand must be reprobate
and they are given up to destruction,
They have no fear of God.
And they are not his children.
So we are called to pray for all his children who call on his name.
And so verse 16 simply states
Pray for those who are struggling with sin
Pray that they would overcome that sin
Pray that the Spirit would awaken them from that sin.
So if you see a brother or sister in the church struggling with a sin
pray for them to overcome the sin they are struggling with.
Remember 1 John 1:9

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And God promises that these sins are forgiven.
These sins are washed in the blood of Christ.
These sins are not unto death
but are transgressions are forgiven to those who are resting in Christ.
Those who believe in the full divinity and humanity of Christ.
And what do we know about these believers who are born of God according to verses 18-19
English Standard Version (Chapter 5)
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
We as believers are called to live a life that is not continually sinning.
The spirit calls us to turn from our sins
repent of them and FOCUS ON THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH
Jesus Christ.
When the Apostle recommends sympathy to us,
He is at the same time reminding us how much we ought to avoid the cruelty of condemning our brethren,
Rather we are called to prey for them and not to condemn them.
John also tells us that God protects his elect from the evil one and that he can’t touch us.
Satan can’t lay a hand on you.
He has no power over you.
You are a child of God.
You are a Overcomer through Christ Jesus.
Becasue you know the truth and that you are from God
And that you have everlasting life.
But the reprobate those who are not called are of the world and they love their sin.
They love their father
their father is the devil.
And we are to avoid becoming entangled with the world
Becasue as John puts it the WHOLE WORLD lies in the power of the evil one.
The whole human race those that are not redeemed by Christ are under the power of Satan.
So as believers we should not hesitate to shun the world,
which contemns God and delivers up itself into the bondage of Satan:
Also there is no reason why we should fear its wrath against us,
because the world is alienated from God.
So we as faithful believers in Christ ought to study self-denial;
Because God who has called believers, are under his protection
And we have a duty to oppose all that Christ calls sin in the world and Satan.
Next in verses 20-21 we learn that we are to be
knowing and living like we will live forever

vs 20-21 Knowing and living like you will live forever.

How do we go about knowing and living like we will live forever.
Becasue its freeing to know and live like you are a child of God.
So lets look at verses 20-21
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Do you get a cense that John is hammering this point of knowing the Son of God.
Knowing that he has Come in the flesh.
Knowing that the Spirit has given us an understanding of who Christ is.
And that Christ is the truth
And we have this assurance of eternal life because he is the truth.
And that we are his children.
He then says that God has been so made known to us, that now there is no reason for doubting.
John dwells on this point for a reason
for unless our faith is really founded on God,
we will never stand firm in it.
And its for this purpose the Apostle shews that we have obtained through Christ a sure knowledge
of the true God, so that we may not fluctuate in any uncertainty.
Believers should have no doubt they are in Christ if they hold to the truths John has set forth.
Thus we believe in the true God in opposition to a fictitious God.
Christ is the only true image of the invisible God,
Christ is the only interpreter of the Father,
Christ is the only guide of life,
Christ is the life and light of the world
Christ is the truth,
And if anyone departs from Christ
we become vain in our own devices.
Remember Christian according to the Book of
Collosians 2:9
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
And in 2 Corinthians 4:6
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
So we should draw some conclusions.
That only the Elect of God will know the truth.
Only the Elect of God will have faith in Jesus Christ.
And Only the elect of God will truly have eternal life.
And only the Elect of God can KNOW AND LIVE LIKE THEY WILL LIVE FOREVER.
John ends the book with verse 21

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Do the people of God have issues with idols.
Well if history is any tell tail sign then yes.
The Golden Calf of Moses time.
The household idols Rachel stole from her dad.
People in the Church like to place so called images of Christ on crosses in their church buildings.
We like to put them in children’s book’s so that now are children have a false image of what Christ looked like.
The evangelical culture here in America likes to make movies depicting Christ like in the movie the Passion of the Christ.
There is a TV series depicting Christ called the chosen.
What does John say regarding these shows and movies and images.
Keep yourself from them.
Don’t look at them.
They are false images of Christ.
They are forbidden images of Christ.
And we should not take part in them.
Rather we should bask it the glorious Gospel
Remember the truth of Gods Word
And what it tells us about his Son.
That he came and died for his elect.
Who were in need of a Savior
And they that believe on him have eternal life.
And we know that it is true because God has confirmed this truth in our minds by his spirit.
And God is not a liar
But rather the King of Kings and Lord of Lords
Jesus Christ
In which the truth is attested and by his Birth, death and resurrection by the spirit.
Believe on him and live.
Amen
