Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”
the context is that the some of the disciples ate with unwashed hands
the question was why do they not follow the traditions of the elders Matt 7:5
are we following the commands of Jesus
or do we follow man’s traditions
Jesus uses a familiar situation to make the spiritual point
Mark 7:19 NIV
For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)

immediate message - all food is clean
Jesus counters the initial offence of the Pharisees
yet there is always a bigger thing with Jesus
there is always something beyond human understanding or endeavour
Jesus goes to a different level every time
Mark 7:20–23 NIV
He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
unclean food goes into the stomach then out of the body
Jesus contrasts the heart against the stomach
here is the deeper spiritual truth
Jesus is speaking to the religious types of Israel
he is also speaking to us and to every generation since that time
Inner Defilement
evil comes out of a person’s heart
this is why Jesus makes such a grand announcement
all these evils come from inside and defile a person
