Intro/The Why:

Ephesians: 11 Studies for Individuals or Groups Study 2: The Power of the King (Ephesians 1:15–23)

When have you experienced something unexpectedly powerful?

Story:
Tim the tool man Taylor on Home Improvement
Renting a machine vs. a group of grandpa’s :)
Paul for Everyone: The Prison Letters Knowing the Power of the King (Ephesians 1:15–23)

If someone says, ‘Well, I don’t seem to have much power as a Christian,’ or, ‘I can’t see the power of Jesus doing very much in the world,’ that simply shows that they need this prayer of Paul

God’s already working in you in a powerful way (v. 15)

Ephesians 1:15 ESV
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints,
Ephesians 1:16–17 ESV
I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,

3 things to know:

Know the hope to which God has called you (v. 18)
Know the riches of God’s glorious inheritance (v. 18)
Ephesians 1:18 ESV
having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

Know God’s Power that is immeasurable (v. 19)

Ephesians 1:19 ESV
and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might

4 Ways God showed his power in Jesus:

RESURRECTION, ENTHRONEMENT, DOMINION, AND HEADSHIP

Power that raised Jesus from the dead (v. 20)

RESURRECTION, ENTHRONEMENT, DOMINION, AND HEADSHIP
Ephesians 1:20 ESV
that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
Death of Jesus was the greatest demonstration of God’s love.
Resurrection of Jesus was God’s greatest demonstration of His power.

Power that seated Jesus at God’s right hand in heaven above (vv. 20-21)

RESURRECTION, ENTHRONEMENT, DOMINION, AND HEADSHIP
Ephesians 1:20–21 ESV
that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
The Epistles to the Colossians, to Philemon and to the Ephesians (2) God’s Mighty Strength Shown in the Raising of Christ (1:20–23)

The throne of God is set in “the heavenly realm”—in that realm in which, as has been said above, the people of Christ are endowed with “every spiritual blessing” in him.

Power that subjected all things under Jesus’ feet (v. 22)

RESURRECTION, ENTHRONEMENT, DOMINION, AND HEADSHIP
Ephesians 1:22 ESV
And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
What the Psalmist wrote is applied to Jesus...
Psalm 8:6 ESV
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
Psalm 110:1 ESV
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
enemies here in Ephesians are “every principality and every power and might”
Ephesus was place of many different groups claiming to have spiritual powers...
Acts 19:19 ESV
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Power that made Christ head over the church (vv. 22-23)

RESURRECTION, ENTHRONEMENT, DOMINION, AND HEADSHIP
Ephesians 1:22–23 ESV
And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
“head” here should be understood as the source of the church’s life

Conclusion/Reflection Question:

Ephesians: 11 Studies for Individuals or Groups Study 2: The Power of the King (Ephesians 1:15–23)

King Jesus as the head of the body of believers has the church as his hands and feet. It is “his body, the fullness of the one who fills all in all.” How can we, his church, act as his agents within the present world?

Our mission: Following Jesus & Reaching out
not about church “programs”
Busyness does not mean godliness
We cannot be so busy coming to church that we end up not being the church (i.e. hands and feet of Jesus)
it is about relationships
it is about community
it is about being focused on Jesus in all areas of our lives

COMMUNION:

Ephesians: 11 Studies for Individuals or Groups Study 2: The Power of the King (Ephesians 1:15–23)

Thank God for the power you have through Jesus’ resurrection, and ask him to help you use it in your daily life.
