8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! 10 The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Introduction:
There must come a point in the life when we all realize we are nothing without God. All of our victories, triumphs and achievements must be stamped with the ephitat that if it were not for God this would not be.
This Psalm is written by David who is being pursued by Saul and finds himself in Gath facing another King called Achish.
DT: When we place our lives in the hands of God, He will take care of us.
Aim: We will faithfully commit ourselves to the will of God.
Propositional statement: When God is first in our lives we will overcome the obstacles in our lives.
God Will Be Our Protection (v.8)
Psalm 34:8 (ESV)
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
David writes this testimonial to assure others of the profound deliverance of God when life is at its worse.
Define: taste - it means to find out; it means to learn of something. To try something out.
Illustration: In Sam’s Club you can walk around the store and you will see stations set up though out with sample products that they want you to sample (try out). You taste it to determine if it is good and to your liking. David says, try God. He is a good protector .
Trying God means to yield our lives totally to him. It means making God first. it means depend on God.
Define: see - it means to experience something, to inspect it. It means to know first hand or to have first hand knowledge.
This text is calling for the reader to experience the goodness of God. To know God first hand as a refuge. (A safe place)
Where do you go for your protection? Where is your safe place?
Application: Many of us have tried every thing other than God and those things have done more harm than good. We have attempted to protect ourselves, keep ourselves, help ourselves but have failed.
God has availed himself and His help for us and we have walked by. We have not tried God.
God Will Provide for Us (v.9)
Psalm 34:9 (ESV)
9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!
If you do not receive anything else from this lesson today, get this. God has everything you need. David poses another imperative which is to fear the Lord.
Define: fear- it means to reverence, to regard with feelings of respect and reverence. It is the act of worship.
Who are the saints?- These are the set a part for God. in the original text the word is holy ones. David is speaking about Israel. Thank God for the blood of Jesus because of his redemption work all who believe and are saved are the Holy ones (the saints)
The text says that when we worship God. God will grant us provisions. You see it? Those who fear (WORSHIP) him will have no lack. See I learned something today. I thought it was nowhere in the Bible . . . (When praises go up blessings come down) But look there it is. Let me read it again, “For those who fear him have no lack!”
Application: All this time you been tripping and doubting and pouting about stuff, when all the while your blessing has been in front of you! Worship God! We should have such respect for God that nothing can take His place. Learn how to worship God when you are disappointed. Learn how to worship God when life is discouraging. Learn how to worship God when you are hurting. I double dog dare you to worship God right now. He will provide.
God Will Answer Our Prayers (v.10)
Psalm 34:10 (ESV)
10 The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
David begins to testify of how swift and attentive God is when His children pray. David gives this picture of a young lion who is from among his pride but alone. The lion has now prey to feed upon and no other food available so he is prowling but hungry and starving.
But not “those who seek the Lord” they have a God they can call on! That is what that word, seek means- to inquire: It means to address a question and expect an answer.
Application: Look, God will answer your prayer! You have got to pray and trust that God has it all under control! Stop complaining and pray! Stop worrying and pray! Stop plotting and Pray! Pray in the morning! In the noon day, Pray! On the job, Pray!
