Setting the Context
From chapter 14 onward we will see the real life application and results of Jesus’ parables in chapter 13.
The Main Point
The Main Point
How we view Jesus will effect how we worship Him.
Back before cell phone camera’s we had cameras… little window you look through is called “the view finder”… it is how we chose what our picture will have | to take… Also we had film… takes time to develop… want to look with you today at some pictures of unbelief and belief and how our view of Jesus effects our worship of Him
How do you view Jesus?
What does your worship say about how you view Jesus?
How should we worship Jesus?
PRAYER
O Lord and God our saviour Jesus Christ we give thanks to you as our good shepherd and the most faithful keeper of our souls. We praise your tender care for us as you bring glad tidings of good things both for now and for eternity. We praise you for the goodness we have seen of you in this book of Matthew and with what earnest care you moved about in pursuit of the conversion of sinners. To bring them to repentance by contrite hearts while caring for physical needs you bring them the healing of spiritual forgiveness as well.
To you Jesus, master of all things, we bring our thirsting hearts. Lead us to your streams of saving grace, that we might dedicate our hearts and minds to delight in your word found in Matthew 14. Open our ears, and direct our eyes that we may focus on you forever and always.
AMEN

Jesus’ Hometown
Jesus’ Hometown
Matthew 13:53–58 (ESV)
53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.
They heard His words
They saw His works
They scoffed at Him
Herod the Tetrarch
Herod the Tetrarch
Matthew 14:1–12 (ESV)
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch [Jew by birth but an Edomite… blood of Esau] heard about the fame of Jesus, 2 and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison [Matt 11:2 - Johns disciples come to Jesus… expectations] for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. [Matt 11:7-9 & Matt 21:23–27 = Jesus speaks about John | Tests chief priest on authority of John’s Baptism] 6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, 7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” 9 And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.
10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, 11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.
He silenced his conscience
He silenced the Prophet
He silenced the Spirit
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him. 9 So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,
When we have a wrong view of Jesus we have a wrong view of everything!

Faith in the Face of Need
Faith in the Face of Need
Matthew 14:13–21 (ESV)
13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them [to have ones vicera stirred, stronger then “sympathy”] and healed their sick. If our Heavenly Father has such compassion toward us, should we not have compassion toward others? 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
Jhn 6.5-9
16 But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
All 4 Gospels = surely a miracle… not encourage sharing of lunch!!
John 6:5–9 (ESV)
5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”
Reflect Jesus’ compassion
Rely on Jesus’ resources
Start with what you have
small boy with a lunch
5 loaves 2 fish - not much
parable of mustard seed...
rocks and thorns of grandeur or lack
Give what you have to Jesus
This is sometimes very hard to do
Jesus is a better steward then you
Things are blessed in His hands
rocks and thorns of possession… what are you clinging too, what is clinging to you?
Obey what He commands
Jesus said “bring them here to me” | “sit down on the grass” | “you give them something to eat” | “pick up the rest” - Jhn 6.12
Jesus says “pick up your cross daily and follow me” | “anyone who finds his life will lose it but he who looses his life for my sake will find it”
disciples are distributers
rocks and thorns of fear and doubt
Receive Jesus’ blessing
Observe the results

Warren Wiersbe - The Bible Exposition Commentary (Chapter Eleven)
The Apostle John recorded a sermon on “the Bread of life” that Jesus gave the next day in the synagogue in Capernaum (John 6:22ff). The people were willing to receive the physical bread, but they would not receive the living Bread—the Son of God come down from heaven.
The miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 was actually a sermon in action. Jesus is the Bread of Life, and only He can satisfy the spiritual hunger in man’s heart. The tragedy is, men waste their time and money on “that which is not bread” (Isa. 55:1–7).
People today are making the same mistake… However, Jesus still has a word of compassion to the hungry multitudes, as He says to them: “you need not go away” and to His church: “Give them something to eat.”
How easy it is for us to send people away, to make excuses, to plead a lack of resources. Jesus asks that we give Him all that we have and let Him use it as He sees fit.
A hungry world is feeding on empty substitutes while we deprive them of the Bread of Life.
Faith in the Face of Fear
Faith in the Face of Fear
Matthew 14:22–33 (ESV)
22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. [The People seeing this sign were going to take and make him king by force John 6:14–15] 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I.[I am] Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Jesus is sovereign over you
He sent them there
Jesus sent them out into the boat, knowing a storm would come
even in the will of God storms come… safety in circumstances is deceptive!
storms of correction
storms of perfection
wherever you go, there you are… wherever you go, there He is!
Jesus is interceding for you
He prays for them
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
He is a priest forever!

Walk on water? … the very thing they feared became His road to them!
Why not recognize? … they were not looking for Him!
Are we looking for him?
Jesus is strength in you
He helps them grow

Real steps of faith, required to grow!
