24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.
Introduction:
Greetings to Matteson from Brookfield.
The world we live in today is divided
Religion is denominated
Division is supported by different world views
Different world views are the result of different teachings
Even in our Bible the difference (of any importance) between Jew and Gentile is what they were taught
We think difference is a matter of:
Race
Culture
Blood
Genetics...
The only difference of any importance is what you are taught and how you receive that teaching...
Christianity is a taught discipline
Christianity is a taught discipline
Christianity is about:
Hearing; Believing and Teaching
In our former belief we were not taught accurately...
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
If one is to remain strong in the faith, you must be taught accurately...
rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
The goal of accurate teaching of God comes with benefits
It produces good leaders for the congregation
Accurate teaching produces accurate instruction and sound doctrine
Accurate teaching allows appropriate push back in the face of error...
He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
[We must always be aware that there is:
inappropriate teaching/ instruction
unsound; inaccurate doctrine…]
You can be taught wrong
You can be taught wrong
The Bible warns about wrong teaching.
It should not surprise us and we should be good disciples like Priscilla and Aquila and contradict imperfect doctrine and teaching...
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
The teaching that leads away from the church is:
deceitful and from demons
In Paul and Apollos day there was an organized effort to teach another doctrine...
But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”
The adding or subtraction of scripture makes it illegitimate; inaccurate; inadequate; imperfect
Apollos deficiency was the baptism of John
He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.
Apollos did not know about the receiving of the Holy Spirit as the accurate doctrine
as one would get by being baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
[Therefore it is of utmost importance to teach with diligence and accuracy…]
Teaching about God and Salvation must be accurate
Teaching about God and Salvation must be accurate
Apollos understood that jesus was the Messiah from the Old Testament but was deficient in the teaching of the Spirit and Grace
Priscilla and Aquila heard the difference...
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
accuracy was the issue between Satan; Adam and Eve...
accuracy is a determiner of world views...
accuracy is a vital ingredient in the steadfastness of a remnant of God...
we can sustain if we are accurately teaching the Word of God...
rightly dividing the word of truth is a critical exercise...
ak - ri - bos 9x’s in ESV
ESV = 1. accurately; 2. closely; 3. diligently; 4. exactly; 5. carefully; 6. fully
the root and sense of (ak-ri-bos) additionally adds meaning such as being: 1. precise; 2. determined; and 3. strict
[So Paul came behind Apollos in Ephesus and found the following…]
1 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Now of course obedience to what one has heard is important but it can be said...
The simple difference between being in John or Jesus, is teaching
The simple difference between being saved and lost, is teaching
The Simple difference between being a child of God, or a child of the world, is teaching
The simple difference between being in Christ, or out of Christ, is teaching
One simple wrong turn on your journey can put you miles and miles away from the intended destination
That’s why false teaching is so dangerous
That’s why one must contradict it by sticking with the scriptures
Conclusion:
So let us understand that Christianity is a taught religion/discipline
We also need to consider that we can be taught wrong
The teaching about God and Salvation must be precise; strict; determined; accurate; exact; close; diligent; carefully and fully...
God’s Plan of Salvation
God’s Plan of Salvation
It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—
I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
