As you all know we have been studying through the theme “Names of Jesus” with the desire to draw closer to our Savior by way of getting to know him better through his names and/or titles. We have specifically been looking at the book of John and the “I Am Names” given to Jesus by Jesus himself. In our last study we examined how Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. Today I want us to turn our attention to John 14:1-14. Here we have one of the most popularly known “I Am” names of Jesus. In fact Jesus can be summed up in this three part name or title for him. Let’s read John 14:6.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the Way. The reality is there is no opportunity to reach the Father except through Jesus. He is the Door (John 10:7) that either lets us in or keeps us out. Peter would declare in Acts 4:12…
12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
So many listen to popes, priests, preachers, and the like today instead of Jesus and his word. The only way to the kingdom of heaven is through Jesus and his word (John 12:48). Jesus is also the Truth.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In John 17.17 we read…
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
Again, man is able to make mistakes. As a preacher I strive everyday to know God’s word and preach the truth from it. I even have a motto, if you will, that from the pulpit “preachers should preach the truth only and only the truth, our opinions don’t matter.” Now I know I can do that because Jesus said of his word in John 8:32…
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
So we must keep our focus on Jesus, the Word which is the Truth. Lastly, Jesus says he is the Life. As we discussed last week Jesus, through the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), brought life to all, both in the past, present, and future. This isn’t focusing on the physical life, though God creates us all (Psalm 139:13), but the soul of everyone created in the image of God i.e., all mankind. Jesus is truly “the” Way, “the” Truth, and “the” Life.
