Who has been bowling?
Do you use bumpers?
Before any kid learns to hit a pitch, what does it learn to do?
Hit it from a tee
Were gonna talk about forgiveness today, and like the bumpers in bowling or the tee in baseball, forgiveness is a girt that take the inevitable likelihood of pain and suffering and puts it in its place.
Show of hands - Has anyone ever been so hurt by someone that it actually kept them awake at night, or even effected their diet.
What is Forgiveness?
forgiveness as a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you
Forgiveness is a gift for the hurting and is independent of the person who caused the pain.
Freeing a person from guilt and its consequences. Also: “Forgive,” “Forgiveness of sin,” “Pardon,” “Remission,” and “Remission of Sins.”
5 things to remember when talking about forgiveness

Let God handle it.

To the folks who have been betrayed or hurt What is our knee jerk reaction?
Get revenge, hurt them in return.
Romans 12:17–21 ESV
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
According to this passage what are we to do?
Repay no evil for evil
Do what is Honorable
Live at peace
don’t avenge yourselves
Feed your enemy
overcome evil with Good

Break the bars of your yoke.

Leviticus 26:13 ESV
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.
A yoke was used and is used to carry heavy loads that normally couldn't be carried with just ones strength . It was also used to restrain people as slaves.
Review Exodus
Isreal was in captivity, they were slaves to Egypt and it was through Moses that God freed the people of Isreal.
While this may not be a direct corralation, the weight of anger and bitterness is a weight that we were not meant to carry.

We are called to forgive.

Matthew 6:14–15 ESV
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
On the 27th we are going to the Adirondacks and we will have the opportunity to experience some really awesome stuff. an amazing hike, some great views and even some caves.
Who has ever gone deep into a cave before?
explain it to me in detail?
How could you explain what its like to be in a cave if you have never been in one.
same thing how can you really experience forgiveness from God if you yourselves have not displayed it.

Jesus is our example

Luke 23:34 ESV
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

God’s greatest sacrifice was for our forgiveness.

1 John 2:2 ESV
He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
