Who we Honor and How we honor

Handout
Week 2 of two weeks of Honor. It’s amazing to me how much hatred and anger and disrespect is going on in our culture. The disrespect is awful and it comes from having no respect for ourselves.
People don’t respect authority… look at what’s going on in our nation…
People are and have been disrespecting our leaders… You can disagree without attacking people. I can say I don’t like the policies, but I cannot say that the man issuing the policies is evil… or a racist because I don’t know him.
Police - people are ambushing and attacking police and their families in person and online.
School teachers - when I went to school and got in trouble with the teacher at school, I was in trouble at home. Now, parents want to come fight the teacher… no wonder they don’t honor the teachers.
Each other - Car Jacking… cheating… disrespect
As I said last week, that’s not how the Lord wants HIS people to live.
Romans 12:10 NIV84
10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Def.

Honor Time: to value, respect or highly esteem, to treat as precious, weighty, or valuable

We are to treat everyone this way…
Mean neighbor,
Mean Boss -
your opposites in politics…
Today, we are going to learn Who we honor and How we honor.

1. Honor Others

All of the others. Peter said…
1 Peter 2:17 The Message
17 Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.
The Emperor at the time was Nero. He was way worse than Joe Biden… or Donald Trump depending on your political persuasion.
So to honor some one is to treat them with dignity and respect.
Paul said it like this.
Philippians 2:3–4 NIV84
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Unlike too many people today, we are never to act out of selfish ambition or conceit.
Humility is the key here, He said … Consider others as better than yourselves. We voluntarily are to look at others and their needs as more important than our own needs and desires.
People say that they are not their brothers keeper, but we are. We are to look out for their interest. This flies in the face of our culture and our politics today.
Maybe they get sick and we need to cut their grass. Maybe an elderly person needs some help at their house occasionally. Maybe a single mom needs a day off…
Romans 12:10 NKJV
10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;

2. Honor Authority

This one is tougher… We don’t like authority.
How many of you speed? How many of you like wearing a mask? How many of you like when your boss tells you to do something…
Look at our government. If they don’t like a law, they just don’t enforce it… ie: illegal immigration… freedom of speech…
Look at what Paul said…
Romans 13:1–2 NLT
1 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished.
It doesn’t matter if I like them or not… agree with them or not… God put them there. It doesn’t even mean that God agrees with them, but it means that he will use them.
Roman Empire to have roads all over the world so the Gospel could spread.
Cirus - allowed Nehemiah to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.
God will use them. one thing we have to remember. God did not come to save our world, he came to save us from our world.
Look at this… When we rebel against authority, we bring curses on our lives.
4 Kingdoms that are in existence. Pray fro our leaders… not hate prayers, but real prayers wether we agree with them to not.
4 Kingdoms

Governmental Authority

Pray for our Pres… gov… parish officials… police
1 Peter 2:13–17 NLT
13 For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. 15 It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. 16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. 17 Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.

Work / School Authority

Boss, teachers, Principals, supervisors…
Does it mean we are only to honor our boss if they are honorable… no, we honor them because we honor God when we honor them.
Same with Teachers…

Family Authority

Parents, Spouse, Children…
Hold them up in value.

Spiritual Authority

Small Group Leaders, Pastors,
1 Timothy 5:17 The Living Bible
17 Pastors who do their work well should be paid well and should be highly appreciated, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching.

3. Honor Parents

Ephesians 6:2–3 NLT
2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
This is the first commandment with a promise. When we honor our parents, God will honor that in our lives.
Tell a story of me honoring my mom and dad. I have had favor in my life and I believer it’s because I have honored my parents.

4. Honor Marriage

The institution of marriage. It’s frustrating how marriage has cheapened. Marriage was created by god for one man and one woman. People want to get married in a field or barn or plantation instead of a church. The problem with the attitude of today is that it takes our focus off of the fact that marriage is ordained by God.
Hebrews 13:4 NLT
4 Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.
Husbands … You better honor your wife.
1 Peter 3:7 NLT
7 In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.
You want your prayers answered? Honor your wife.

5. Honor Age

Leviticus 19:32 NIV84
32 “ ‘Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.
Job 12:12 NLT
12 Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old.
Young people… they do know more than you do. I know teens think that they know everything… You don’t, but the older ones know more… listen to them.

6. Honor Nature

Everything God created, He has placed value on. That means as Christians we don’t litter… we take care of nature....
Genesis 1:28 NLT
28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
We are to manage and take care of nature.

7. Honor God

We honor God with our lives.
Too often, our prayers are about us, but we need to come to honor God.
It’s the first day of the week and we want to honor the Lord...
Malachi 1:6 NLT
6 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says to the priests: “A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. If I am your father and master, where are the honor and respect I deserve? You have shown contempt for my name! “But you ask, ‘How have we ever shown contempt for your name?’
Chap. 2 God says he is actually offended by our actions. That’s why actual church attendance is important.... when we come to church we honor God.
Psalm 29:2 NLT
2 Honor the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
Psalm 34:3 NKJV
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me, And let us exalt His name together.

How We Honor God

1. We honor by putting Him first

When we come to church, we are putting God first in our week.
Proverbs 3:9 NIV84
9 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
This is why we teach tithing. We give the first 10% to God first… you mean God is first instead of Winn Dixie, or Entergy, …
Proverbs 3:9 The Message
9 Honor God with everything you own; give him the first and the best.
The first thing Kathy and I do when we get paid is to tithe. Now, we do it online.

2. We honor with our words

You cannot be a person of honor and curse people… gossip about them… judge people.
James 3:9–10 NIV84
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
Ephesians 4:29–30 NIV84
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

3. We honor by protecting them

If something is of value, you protect it.
ILL of something valuable. Babe Ruth autograph bat missing. It was one of 7. His nurse had the bat… After 17 years she brought it to a dealer to see if it was arith anything. She sold it for 1.7 million. She took the money and opened her restaurant and donated the rest to a charity Babe ruth liked. Here is what she said…
John 7:18 NLT
18 Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.

“The bat was only valuable because Babe Ruth’s name was on it. Since he made it valuable, the only reasonable thing I could do was something that would honor his life.” Marcia Napoli-Tejeda

Closing
If you will honor God this way, and let him honor you in turn… to put his name on your life… he will honor you. Then you will sense the value that you actually have.
Prayer -
We want to be people who value you Lord.
If you are here today or watching… if want Gods name written on your heart… you have no idea of the value you will experience in your life… Pray with me.
