Introduction

Good morning and welcome to FCC where we worship God is Spirit and in Truth, one verse at a time!
Did you see the sun this morning, it was red because of the fires that we are surrounded by church.
Let us be faithfully praying for the firefighters and all the workers who are working long hours and their families whom I am sure are impacted by this.
Let us pray like Elijah for rain. He asked God for rain and God sent rain church:
James 5:17–18 NKJV
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
Jame writes the verse before this that the affective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
Here are a few pictures to ponder, because although fire is real and it burns, there are some of us here today that have other kinds of fires going on in our lives, in our homes, at our places of employment, with our families, our neighbors, and communties that need put out, because if we don’t church, it is going to reap havoc and destroy everything in its way like these pictures portray:
It could be relationships, it could be finances, it could be our children, it could be the fires that we bring into our own lives because we do not allow the peace of God to rule or be the umpire of our hearts and because we do not allow the Word of Christ to dwell in us richly church !
We want what we want and we want it now! Right!
Or It could be our tongues as brother James said:
James 3:5–10 NKJV
Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
Let us stop here and dive into the word this morning!

Read Colossians 3:14-17

Prayer

Lord, first of all we lift up all the firefighters and workers who are laboring around the clock to put out these fires, we ask for wisdom and strength and that you Lord would send more laborers. That you would comfort all the families involved and especially those that have been impacted by these fires. Lord we thank you for today and for all the gifts, graces, and blessings that you have given each one of us. We thank you and praise you Lord for the cross, for your Word, and the gift of the Holy Spirit and now as we take time out to study your Word this morning we ask like Elijah that you would bring forth rain not only into the valley and the surrounding states, but that you would send rain into our lives to extinguish that fires that have been reaping havoc in our lives. God we need the living water today, so please as you gave to the woman at the well, like her; we come with our sin and brokenness needing redemption, forgiveness, and to washed by the Word this morning! Review

We have been in Colossians for some time now church and especially in this section .
We have tarried here, because this is not only Christ’s character, but it is also the Christian life or walk.
When we talk about our walk, we are talking about our daily conduct. how we live or lives church.
Paul taught us about the Preeminence of Jesus Christ in the first tow chapters because false teachers in Colossae were attacking it.
False teaching will always, and I mean always attack the Supremacy or the Preeminence of Jesus Christ in the life of a believer.
They will always say that Jesus is not enough, the Word is not enough, you need to do more or have the wisdom and books that God gave us!
After he taught us about Jesus, and by the way remember that Colossians 1-2 teaches more on Christology than any other book of the Bible.
Paul moved us from doctrine to duty church.
Paul is saying that if you are saved them you need to kill the sinful deeds of the flesh, put off your graveclothes and put on your grace clothes and live out loud.
He then teaches us here at verses 14-17 three additional imperatives that will guard you from the distractions and false teachers of today:
Put on love which is the belt that hold on the grave clothes church
Let the peace of God rule or be the umpire of your hearts.
Remember, the peace should govern our life and the decisions we make
If there is no peace, then there is no to a decision at that moment
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly church
Colossians 3:16 NKJV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Can someone mature in the Lord without allowing the Word to dwell richly within them?
The answer is no!
We cannot or will not grow in our walk with the Lord if we do not feast on the living Word of God1
To dwell church means to be at home with, to take up residence, to reside with.
Does the Word of God dwell richly within you?
The Bible's impact on American culture is unmistakable; it has shaped our laws, social systems and even our our language church.
Many of us can remember even hearing non- believers quotes scriptures like your reap what you sow, or go the extra mile like Jesus said.
But we do not hear it no more.
Why? Why don’t we hear even believers quoting these verses and more?
It is because we live in a day and age where we want fast food church, we do not want to take time out to make a freshly prepared meal.
What happens if you eat fast-food all the time?
Study after study in the last quarter-century has revealed that American Christians increasingly don't read their Bibles, don't engage their Bibles, and don't know their Bibles. It's obvious: We are living in a post-biblically literate culture.
Just as critical is the second word of the Bible literacy problem: literacy. Pew Research tells us that 23 percent of us didn't read a single book in the last year. That's three times the number who didn't read a book in 1978. Whether it's the Internet, video games, the TV or increased time spent on entertainment and sports, Americans are spending less time between the pages of any book, not just the Good Book.
The situation should be different with Christians. We believe the Bible is the Word of God—His divinely inspired, innerant message to us. To experience the Bible firsthand, whole people groups have learned to read, and new translations were created. Yet a recent LifeWay Research study found that only 45 percent of those who regularly attend church read the Bible more than once a week. Over 40 percent of the people attending are reading their Bibles occasionally—maybe once or twice a month, if at all. In fact, 18 percent of attenders say they never read the Bible.
There is no excuse. It's not as if we don't have access. The average American—Christian or not—owns at least three Bibles. Even those who don't have one in their home can download it free to their smartphone or "steal" a Gideon Bible from a hotel room. The Word of God is more available than ever. People have died to bring us what has led to modern translations of Scripture, yet we are dying from lack of knowledge
The reason why the church is dying is not because there is lack of Bibles, but it is because there is lack of Bible teaching.
John 17:17 NKJV
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
The Lord has given us a command church, to let the Word of Christ dwell richly within us.
It is to take up residence within our hearts.
My heart needs to be Christ home.
People are falling victims to false teacher today just like they did back then, they difference is we have the whole Bible and they did not.
Let me give you a couple examples church:
Kenneth Copeland who teaches the health and wealth gospel owns three private planes and has a net worth of $800 million dollars.
I could give you more , but I will notT
The reason why these Televangelist keep getting richer is because people do not know their Bibles church
And this is w\hat Paul is telling us here, if we do not allow the Word of Christ to dwell in us richly, we too will fall victim to the heresies of today.
Hebrews 5:12–14 NKJV
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
The Hebrews were regressing in their understanding of concerning the Messiah.
They had long been exposed to the gospel to be teaching it to others, but Paul here says they were actually babies and unskilled in the Word of truth.
Where are you at in your understanding of the Word? Would you consider yourself a grown up? Or?
There is a danger today, as there was in Paul’s day, that local churches minimize the Word of God. There seems to be a lack of simple Bible teaching in Sunday School classes and pulpits. Far more interest is shown in movies, musical performances, and various entertainments than in God’s Word. Many saved people cannot honestly say that God’s Word dwells in their hearts richly because they do not take time to read, study, and memorize it.
How do we let the Word take up residence in our heart church?
Spend time in the Word through going through books of the Bible, through using a reading plan, through using devotionals.
Through coming to Judy’s Bibel study
Through coming to grow groups when we have them
Through being involved in men’s and women’s groups in the fall
Through teaching a Bible study
Through working with the kids
Through Scripture memorization
Through allow the HS to lead you in study
Have a problem with sin?
Psalm 119:11 NKJV
Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
Do you want revival in your life?
Psalm 119:25 NKJV
My soul clings to the dust; Revive me according to Your word.
Do you have heaviness in your life?
Psalm 119:28 NKJV
My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your word.
Do you want conversion in you soul?
Psalm 19:7–11 NKJV
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.
Michael Billester once gave a Bible to a humble villager in eastern Poland. Returning a few years later, he learned that 200 people had become believers through using it. When the group gathered to hear him preach, he suggested that before he spoke he would like each person to quote some verses of Scripture. One man rose and said, "Perhaps, Brother, we've misunderstood you. Did you mean verses or chapters?" Billester was astonished. "Are you saying there are people here who could recite complete chapters of the Bible?" That was precisely the case. In fact, 13 of them knew half of Genesis and the books of Matthew and Luke. Another had committed all the psalms to memory. Combined, the 200 knew virtually the entire Bible.
To let the word of Christ richly dwell is identical to being filled with the Spirit:
Ephesians 5:18 NKJV
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
The Word in the heart and mind is the handle by which the Spirit turns the will. It is clear that these two concepts are identical because the passages that follow each are so similar.
Colossians 3:18–4:1 is parallel to Ephesians 5:19–6:9.
The result of being filled with the Holy Spirit is the same as the result of letting the Word dwell in one’s life richly.
Therefore, the two are the same spiritual reality viewed from two sides.
To be filled with the Spirit is to be controlled by His Word. To have the Word dwelling richly is to be controlled by His Spirit.
Paul then mentions two specific results of the Word of Christ dwelling in the believer, one positive and the other negative: with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another.
Teaching is the impartation of positive truth. Diadasko- to instruct, to instill doctrinal truth
Admonishing is the negative side of teaching. It means to warn people of the consequences of their behavior. Both are the result of a life overflowing with the Word of Christ
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Do you want to be equipped, then let the word of God dwell in you richly!
Colossians 3:16 NKJV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Paul then moves on a say if the Word of Christ is dwell in us then guess what the natural products will be : Teaching, admonishing in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs signing with grace in you heart to the Lord.
If you a person that does not sing to the Lord in your heart, then there is a good chance the the Word is not dwelling inside of you!
All great revivals in antiquity happened because the Word of God was being proclaimed, there was personal and corporate repentance that happened, and many come to Christ.
But you know what else happened during these times of revival, great hymns and spiritual songs sprung up inside of John and Charles Wesley and many others, during the great Jesus Movement on the West coast when hippies were saved, they decided to write contemporary music and this is where we have contemporary Christian music now.
When contemporary Christian music started it was all about God church, but now since we have become a biblically illiterate society and have fallen from grace, much of the music we hear on K-Love is about me and God WHY?
It is because we do not know our Bibles church.
Psalm 40:3 NIV
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.
If we are saved, then the Word here says that He has put new song in our mouths.
If we have this new song, look at what the verse teaches: many will see and put their trust in HIM
Because there was not copies of the Bible yet, they would sing hymns which was considered portion of Scripture because it helped them to memorize the Word.
Having the Word of Christ richly dwell in us produces not only information, but also emotion. It generates psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, and singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Psalms were taken from the Old Testament psalter, the book of Psalms. They sang psalms put to music, much as we do today. Hymns were expressions of praise to God. It is thought that some portions of the New Testament (such as Col. 1:15–20 and Phil. 2:6–11) were originally hymns sung in the early church. Spiritual songs emphasized testimony (cf. Rev. 5:9–10).
Colossians 3:17 NKJV
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Paul has instructed us to :
But on the Bond of perfection which is love
To let the peace of God rule in our hearts
To let the word of Christ dwell in us richly
And now, to do everything in the name of the Lord
And to be thankful church
If we have put on love, and are allowing the peace of God to rule in our hearts, and allow the word of Christ to dwell in us richly, then guess what church?
We will teach others
We will sing unto the Lord with grace in our hearts because grace is ruling our hearts
And we will do every thing in the name of the Lord
And finally we will be thankful
Is God’s peace ruling in your hearts, is the Word of Christ dwelling richly within you?
Don’t forget, it is impossible to become a mature believer without the Word dwell inside of us. Be filled with the Spirit and letting the Word reside inside of us are the same thing church.
