David was in a dark place in life.
David was in a dark place in life.
David was tired, weary, and frustrated with the way life was going. He was out of God chosen/ secret place for him; he was in Ziklag- ( winding place, a place of circles, the place people with a covenant for over a year in four months).
During this time David did write any Psalms and he lived a lie; a life he had to look over his shoulders and always watch his back.- The cares of the world choked the word out David. Mark 4:19
And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
David was rejected by the people of Philistine- ( Blessing in disguise) David was to be Achish right hand man and to go war with them against Israel but he was not allowed but the other kings did not trust him.
1 Samuel 29:3–11 (KJV 1900)
Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day? And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men? Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands? Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the Lord liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not. Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines. And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king? And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle. Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart. So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
David’s town Ziklag was attacked while he was away.
David’s town Ziklag was attacked while he was away.
David usually leave men behind to guard the supplies and watch the camp. Usually the enemy attack when we let our guard down.
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
The Amalekites invaded Ziklag- Amalakites represent a type or shadow of the flesh, satan and ungodliness
And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
David and his men lost everything including their wives and children.
David and his men lost everything including their wives and children.
So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
There is nothing more hurtful for man than the loss of his wife and children.
Every godly parent grieves when their children get captured by the things of the world.
Every leader grieves when the decision they make put there followers in danger.
David and his men wept till they could not weep anymore.
David and his men wept till they could not weep anymore.
Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
David was greatly distressed because of his loss and because his men talked about stoning him.
David was greatly distressed because of his loss and because his men talked about stoning him.
1 Samuel 30:5–6a (KJV 1900)
And David’s two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters......
It appeared to all over for David- ( perhaps getting killed by stone was a way out of his misery)
David went from being one of the admired men to feeling worthless. He was homeless, broke, defeated, embarrassed, hurt, depressed, stressed out, disappointed, and had no respect from his men.
David felt like he let God down, his men down, his family down. His mind was going through so much torment and mental anguish.
What did David do? What would have done? What was the turning point?
David did four things to overcome his horrible situation.
David did four things to overcome his horrible situation.
1. David spoke to himself and encouraged himself in the Lord.
1. David spoke to himself and encouraged himself in the Lord.
1 Samuel 30:6b (KJV 1900)
................but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
He started focusing on the bigness of His God and not the bigness of his circumstances.
He started having hope in the Lord and not in his own strength and might.
Psalm 42 (KJV 1900)
To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.
As the hart panteth after the water brooks,
So panteth my soul after thee, O God. ( Like a dear being hunted by a lion)
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my meat day and night,
While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me:
For I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? (Why am discouraged; sad )
Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him
For the help of his countenance.
O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee
From the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts:
All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night his song shall be with me,
And my prayer unto the God of my life.
I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me?
Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me;
While they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me?
Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him,
Who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
Jesus wants us to be of good cheer when we face problems.
John 16:33 (KJV 1900)
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
When we encourage ourselves in the LORD we get supernatural strength.

1 Samuel 30:7-8 - 7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David. 8 And David inquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
And lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him,
And he shall direct thy paths.
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

4. David was empowered and inspired by God to recover all.
And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled. And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives. And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all. And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David’s spoil.
The Holy Ghost empower us to do God’s will.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
In Closing, God we pursue overtake, and recover all!!
