Introduction
Superscript states a Psalm of David; so we know the author but we know nothing concerning when it was written. Most Bible scholars believe it was written in David’s later life due to some of the thoughts included in the Psalm.
This Psalm is a Psalm of Lament. Webster’s defines lament as: 1) to express sorrow, mourning, or regret for often demonstratively : to MOURN; and 20 to regret strongly.
This is the first instance of an acrostic or alphabetical Psalm. Others are: Ps. 34, 37, 111, 112, 119, 145; in Proverbs 31, from the tenth verse to the end of the chapter; and in the lamentations of Jeremiah, the whole of which book is composed on this plan, except the last chapter.
As we delve into tis Psalm we may catch a glimpse of the man after God’s own heart. We discover him mentioning the sins of his youth; the pain and cruelty of his foes; and some have seen Absalom’s rebellion. What lesson do we find in the introductory remarks? It is the mark of a true saint that that his sorrows remind him of his sins, and sorrow for his sin drives him to his God.
